Short Game Level Up-Forearm Pronation

Tonight I looked outside and realized most of the snow had melted out of my backyard and there was a chance to practice my nemesis shot around the greens-tight, wet, muddy lies. I think I stumbled upon something in the few hours I spent out there! 

 

In the backswing, I focused on pronating the left forearm-seems to keep extension in the left wrist and expose more bounce! Setting up with a bit stronger grip and more internal left shoulder seemed to help with this. I've never seen this taught anywhere, but it seems to make a world of difference for controlling low point and adding softness to a shot. For what it's worth, I naturally keep the left forearm pronation pretty minimal in my full swing, so I tend to be a bit of a flexed left wrist shut face guy.

 

Anyone try this and have some success?

Yeah and you can get a ton of spin that way, but the issue is that you have to then rotate the forearm slightly back again to square the face and can tend to get a little flippy. 
 

It’s also tough for shorter shots, at least IMO, because there’s no time to both pronate and stay short. 
 

Last round I chipped like this I holed two straight for birdie, bladed one, and duffed two lol

James Siekmann (probably spelled it wrong) teaches rotation of the lead arm as a pivotal part of the short game to keep the club on plane. Good drill is to take the club back to hip high with just your lead arm. Then put your trail arm on the club. Lead arm will naturally pronate to accommodate the weight of the club.

The talking heads state that Victor Hovland struggles with pitching because he does not let the arms rotate and keeps the face shut. Hard to play that way...trust me I know.

I've bounced around myself seeing what I can glean from each. JS's book "Your Short Game Solution" is a must read imo. Not only teaches technique but how to practice along with some mental techniques and strategy thrown in. I favor it over the videos I've purchased from most of the big nane short game teachers. 

I'm also experimenting with some things Dan Carraher touched on in a podcast he was a guest on with Mark immelman. Would also recommend giving it a listen.
