i525 Are In!

blazman11

Recommended Posts

Just got the text my i525 came in today.  They will be pulling them apart and puring the shafts today so I won't get a chance to hit them until tomorrow.  Been waiting on this day for almost 3 years since I first bought the i500 and have tried desperately to replace them.

Now if I can just get Ping to finish the putter they've been building for 5 months.

Good news!!  But why go ahead and void any warranty you might have before even hitting them?  Skip the pure.  Also, pics asap!

There is no voiding of warranty.  At least not pertaining to me in this case.

Puring is debatable which I'm not going to get into here but I believe it makes a difference (less so with graphite iron shafts vs drivers in my experience).  But when it's something I plan on playing for a while then I go for the Puring.

I love how everyone craps on Pureing; 75-80% maybe more of pro's do it. They are the best golfer's in the world that could probably hit garbage can lids better than all of us yet take advantage of the tighter tolerances that Pureing brings. Why not do it for the average guy especially if you can afford it.

I'd love to see the info backing up that claim.  Something tells me it isn't out there...

so many WITB's show Pureing. Can see it in those posts. I could be high in my number for sure, I'm just a simpleton, but it's not a tiny fraction. On SST's website at least 72 guys in 2019 had it done that they listed, I'd say that number is higher now.

read over 80 guys 2019/2020, so 50ish percent of PGA Tour guys then. So i'm wrong, but not a small number anyways.

Curious as to how you think it would be more given that 2019 has less than the previous 2 years (132 & 121).

This is literally the easiest marketing thing to put in play and it seems the numbers are dropping, and being used by a ton of journeyman to no bodies.  Gawd love them, but I don't think that touting Mike Weir or Camilo were using a product you touched for the last 10 years is a ringing endorsement given just how far they've fallen (granted, a bit better as of late).

Lee Trevino hasn't played a real event on Tour in 22 years, yet is credited as being a player "On Tour" using Pur'd shafts, 7 years ago...  If anything, he was likely given a set that had been pur'd, rather than sought out the service.

Another, Jerry James, has 1 event played in his career, missed the cut (shooting 79/80), 10 years ago...

May I second the request for pictures.... of every club?  At address?  I ask because while the advance praise for the i525's is vast, I wasn't enamored of the aesthetics in the originals.  Yes, I've seen the demo 7-iron (and that looks GREAT) I can't bring myself to spring for a set until I at least have an idea of what every club looks like.  Even Ping Customer Service turned down this request so.....it's your chance to be a HERO!  👌

Yet you skip some of the top player's in the world using it. Opinion is opinion, we are destined to disagree it seems so no point continuing down this road.

Because they are 100% irrelevant to this.  As you said, the best players in the world could play basically anything, and they do, so a few sprinkled in means virtually nothing...  Far more don't than do it seems, and that isn't opinion and a more telling story...

I mean, when you can't even keep up to date on your own website regarding people using your product in over 2 years...  As I said, this is easy marketing.  "In the covid world of uncertainty, why wouldn't you play the only sure thing...".  Sure beats the reality of asking a Pro if it helps make them a better player with the reply going to be, "I don't know if it makes a difference, but it can't hurt, right?"...

Jason Gore won on Tour with a set left under the Cobra trailer that was built for someone else.  Wonder if they were pur'd...

We are literally living in the 'get fit' era and this is a service that the OEM's don't even offer...  They like over charging for things and don't even do this...

I'll just say this about puring.  If you think it helps and can swing the $40-45 charge per club then do it.  I think it does help, again more so for the driver.  I only played one set of irons that were pured and I cannot recall any of those "hey I know I hit that well but the ball isn't going where it should" moments with un-pured iron shafts.

Regardless, this game is 90% mental. If you think it works then go for it.  Nobody needs a Circle T putter but if that gives you confidence that you're making that 5 footer then great.  Personally I like to eliminate variables as much as possible when it makes sense for me to do so and I have experienced better dispersion with Pured shafts (whether empirically or anecdotally is debatable but I don't care).

I will be honest, I am not a "Puring" believer but would love to hear your feedback once you use them as compared to maybe other sets that are not pured.

Why does PING put this notch in all their irons? I know you can’t see it at address, but it’s just an eyesore IMO. Also, I’m sure it’s not the case, but it just looks like a weak point with how narrow it gets there.

It's to make bending the irons easier.  They literally hit it was a mallet (or at least used to).

I know you were half joking but easier is a relative term.  I've never tried to bend a Ping iron myself but I've tried other 17-4 irons and it can be a real battle.  They've been doing the notch for 20-30 years so I think they have a handle on the engineering aspect of it.

Yes, as I said, I am sure they don’t bend under normal use or they wouldn’t have it. It just looks like they would, as it’s gets pretty thin at the notch. Just always my 1st thought when I see Ping irons. And again, if bending irons was an issue worthy of a special notch, I’m sure other major OEMs would have something similar. Not a club builder, so perhaps just an issue if one doesn’t have the proper equipment??? Hey, at least they have ferrules now! 😂

*thanks for the link btw.

Yeah I don't know.  It's a curious thing for sure.  I know Ping made the Anser forged about 10 years ago and they have the Blueprint now.  There was also the BeCu Eye 2's.  I'm not a Ping historian but I want to say all / vast majority of irons besides those were 17-4 bodies?  And their heritage was more engineering focused (i.e. creating functional tools) more so than aesthetically pleasing - along with their belief that everyone should get fit for irons.

All I know is that when I tried bending a 17-4 iron before, I couldn't get it moving with my setup.  I have an older Golfsmith machine on a small platform that's not bolted down to anything.  Bending forged irons is easy but there was no way I was getting that thing to move.  The platform has a base in the shape of an H so I was standing on both metal brackets on one side trying to crank on the bar and I'm not a small guy.  So yeah I think there could be something there to your comment about not having the proper equipment.  I know I could've bent it if the machine was fully stabilized.

Ordered on 03/04 thru my local shop fitting. Nothing crazy spec wise (Black dot, std LLL, DG 120). Picked them up today. Less than 2wk turnaround. SHEESH.

I mentioned in the other i525 thread that it feels like Ping and Mizuno are going to out deliver TM and Titleist. Feels like service is #1 this year bc of all of the supply chain challenges, they really want to deliver.

Thought this slip was interesting considering that they delivered early haha.  Will be back once I’m able to get to a range or something.

Congrats on the new sticks! Glad to see that Ping is turning things back around.

I have to disagree with the comment that you made about Mizuno and TM.

I've ordered a set of irons and a driver from TM that shipped very quickly. I also ordered a set of irons from Mizuno (like many others) and unfortunately have already been waiting for 7 weeks and expect at least 2-3 more.....

Glad to hear your TM gear showed up quick! I know Mizuno had a system outage for a good week a few weeks ago so I'm sure that didn't help their cause.

It seems like people's deliveries are a luck of the draw with certain companies, more than others.
