STank724's WITB - 2025 Updates

Did you try the whole MP line up? If so, how did the 223 compare to the 225 and 221? how does it feel forgiveness wise in the long and short irons in off center strikes? Do the short irons feel like MB or do they seem a little more forgiving?

what irons were you previously playing? What shafts as well b/c those 115 are new.

Do you have gapping issues in the 7-8 change over?

debating about picking these up. Even though I have the 225 and 221 I am debating about adding the 223 as well …. Don’t know why….. but am fascinated my the whole MP line up….. I am sure it is just redundant. No other line has really caught my attention like these have. Seem like classics across the whole line. Going to be tough to improve on in the future.

Wow sorry, not sure how I missed this post. Based on your recent posts it looks like you may have already gotten it all sorted out, but maybe this will still help you and someone else down the line.

My MP fitting recollection (all with 7i):

225: this is what I started with. It felt extremely hot. I was getting anywhere between 185-195 carry - my Cobra Fly-Z+ was 175-180 during warmup. My peak height and decent angle were looow, like unplayable. The feel wasn’t great to me.

223: moved into the 223’s with same shaft PX 6.0. Immediate increase in launch, peak height and descent angle. Carry between 184-190. Feel was, and still is, powerful but soft. Toe strikes are my miss and I still get good performance; not full carry numbers but the ball still finds its way out there in the direction I want.

221: took 3 swings with the 221 and PX 6.0. Pured every single one. I was pretty shocked. Had never hit a blade before and was expecting to be all over the place, but for whatever reason it all clicked. Peak height, spin and descent angle all increased even more to better numbers (maybe a loft thing?). Carry numbers were the same as previous set with 223. In the back of my head I’ve wondered why I didn’t get a combo of 221 7-PW and 22x 5/6, but I convinced myself at the time blades were not for me. I still don’t think I’m a blade player, but hard to argue with that performance.

The rest of the fitting we keyed in on the 223 with different shafts. The PX 6.0 and DG 120 S300 had the best results, but neither felt like the one for me. Kind of like I needed something stiffer than the DG but more lively that the PX. I didn’t purchase on the spot, but I went in a few days later to play with the Mizuno shaft optimizer. It spit out the Modus 115X, but it wasn’t in the fitting cart. I decided to take a flyer on my order. After finally hitting them, they’re exactly the inbetween I was looking for.

Regarding performance since receiving, I only have a handful of ranges sessions and one round under my belt, but the clubs feel great overall. I had the 5-8 bent 1° weak. I haven’t noticed any major gapping issues so far. I’d say the short irons feel pretty comparable to the 221 7i from my fitting though it’s difficult to remember. I wouldn’t say they’re worlds apart. They feel damn good.

I previously played Cobra Fly-Z+ with KBS Tour S+ (125g). I’m really liking the decrease in shaft weight and the Modus feel smoother to me.

Excited to officially get a M Craft II in the bag – 13g weight in toe, 8g in heel.

Bought it used locally to replace the Stroke Lab Seven that I could just never get comfortable with no matter how much practice I put in with it. I used an Odyssey White Hot XG #2 for 14 years prior to the Seven so the M Craft II is a welcome return to a familiar/similar shape.

Replaced the SS Tour 2.0 with a Lamkin Deep Etched Cord which I’m really digging. I went in to the shop fully expecting to leave with a Golf Pride Pro Only Cord and kept trying to find reasons not to buy the Lamkin, but so glad I ultimately went with my gut.

Played 9 on Mother’s Day and drained a 20 footer to close out my round, which solidified its place.

I’m also really excited to get back into a blade because it means I get a limited edition headcover back in my bag. It’s custom made by PRG with Full Tilt (Ski) Boots artwork – my buddy is/was their Brand Director and had X amount made for athletes, reps, etc. I’m an avid freeskier, more so before my 2 year old arrived, so it’s an ode to my post college years and lifestyle.

After a pretty ridiculous game of driver musical chairs last year – which saw a Cobra Fly-Z+, Ping G410 LST, Mizuno ST-Z, and a SIM 2 Max – the Cobra LTDx 9° paired with the ZF 60x is going into the bag for the foreseeable future. I’m holding myself to that.

I’ve had it for a couple weeks now, but hadn’t spent much time with it. After my round Sunday and today’s range session, I can firmly say I’m a fan and happy to be reunited with a Cobra driver (the Fly-Z was in my bag since 2015). This thing wants to go straight.

Lead tape to bring it up to D4. Debating hot melt, but that feels like putting a ring on the finger...

Any thoughts to adding a 14th club even if its just some gimmicky club like a 64 wedge or 1 iron?

Hah, there’s some other top end shuffling underway so a possible 14th club will depend on that. I’ve been liking the idea of a 19° utility/driving iron. No intention or itch to add another wedge though.

Officially replaced the trusty Fly-Z+ 4/5 wood with the LTDx LS paired with the Tour AD VR 8x - improved forgiveness and a bump in distance. Still deciding on playing it at 17.5 or 16.5.

Did some on course testing with the VR vs a Diamana BF 70tx and the VR won pretty handily. BF required just a little too much effort and I lost most balls high and right. I imagine I'll get bored down the road and try to make the BF work by really playing with the weights and loft sleeve.

Not officially in the bag, but testing of the Mizuno Fli Hi 3 begins tomorrow. Wanting another tee club primarily, but also something usable off the deck.

Went an interesting, and possibly questionable, route with the MMT 105tx iron shaft (instead of a hybrid shaft), but I like it in my 4 utility so wanted to give it a shot.

With 2022 coming to a close and snow on the ground, I wanted to post an end of the year WITB.

Turned over the Driver, Wood(s) and Putter all for the better. For 2023, the irons may be on their way out and I'm also due for some new wedges. Also on the hunt for a 230-240 yard club - have had my eye on an Apex UW 21*

Bag has undergone some serious overhaul and is nearing completion so figured I’d spend some time detailing the individual changes leading up to the completed 2023 WITB. First up is the putter which made an appearance in my previous post.

Although I liked the Mizuno M Craft II and used a blade forever, it became apparent that it just wasn’t a great fit. For whatever reason I just couldn’t see my start lines or get them right so I lost a lot of confidence in my putting at the tail end of last year.

Before the M Craft, I dabbled with two Odyssey 7’s (Stroke Lab Black and White Hot OG) over the last couple years, but quickly got rid of them because the inserts felt too soft for me. Still, I’ve always loved the shape which lead me on my search for a milled mallet. Spent a lot of time rolling putts in the store with different shapes and hosels.

Ultimately snagged a 2022 Toulon Garage Las Vegas H7 with KBS CT Tour on FB marketplace for a steal. Feel off the face and appearance is exactly what I was looking for. It actually came with Carolina Blue paint fill, which was quite unsightly to me, so I gave custom paint fill a shot for the first time - dark gray is what I landed on. Last week I installed a black CT Tour and went up half an inch to 34.5”.

Between the slick look and the time spent rolling putts on my practice mat all winter, my confidence level heading into the year is pretty high.

I won't make any outrageous claims about performance improvement, especially since it's the only shaft I've had in the LV head, but smooth and consistent is how I'd describe it from takeaway to impact. It's hard to describe, but not something I'd ever felt in any putter I've owned before. It just feels better. I'm a big fan.

The Washington handicap season ends today so it seemed fitting to cap it off with a WITB since the weather is horrendous. It's a long overdue update and multiple changes have happened since my last WITB post almost two years ago.

Quick rundown of changes that happened between then and now:

- Cobra King Tour/CB irons and RTX6 50 & 54 were in the bag all last season through spring this year

- Cobra Darkspeed LS 10.5 to start 2024 then moved on to Ai Smoke TD Max in the summer

- 3/4 Woods...TSR2, Stealth 2+, Darkspeed LS, TSi2 have all been on the merry go round.

New irons in the bag day.

After tinkering and testing a lot of irons in the shops, finally settled on King Tour Blacks with $-Taper 120. Going softer than usual to hopefully reduce that hit mentality on the course.

Had the toughest time choosing between these and the Zxi7’s. Pretty much a toss up and it essentially came down to looks. The Cobra’s may be just a hair more forgiving and with my second child due in two weeks I could use the help. Cobra soles are more plug and play for me as well.

Biggest surprise was the 4 iron unseating the oldest club in my bag, the ZX Utility. The KT 4i was insanely consistent in my sim session today - I think the thinner sole, and shaft, just work better for my delivery.

May need to bend these weak and flatten the lies, but I’ll sort that out in a couple months. Also will keep an eye out for $-Taper HT’s that I can hardstep.

Man, those are real lookers there! I think you made a great choice.

Trackman session today to do some testing. I had recently been feeling like the Tour AD VF wasn't aligning with my swing and wanted to go firmer in the handle.

Ventus Red Velocore+ officially going into the GT2. Wow what a great feeling shaft. Stable but explodes through the ball. Shifted my dispersion more to the right of center line, while also tightening it side to side, with less fear of pulling left. I was consistently hitting a small fade with the Ventus whereas the the shot shape of the VF was more unpredictable. Average club speed was up .5 mph and ball speed up 2.5 mph.

Specs:

GT2 10* @ D1; 5g back weight with 5g lead tape (had been playing this with a 13g back weight)

Ventus Red Velo+ 6x @ 45", tipped 1".

In related news, my 5 weeks of speed training has paid off. Averaged 170mph ball speed today. Back in mid-December I felt like I was swinging out of my shoes to touch high 160s.

7w is out and Stealth Plus 5w is in for now. The Sim Max was my second venture into 7 woods and they just aren't for me. I've found that I hit them SO high and spinny and often come up well short of my desired carry number. The 5w turned up a click gets me the carry number with less effort and still averages a 49* descent angle.

Stealth+ 19* @ 19.75*; 12g back weight

Kaili Blue 80tx @ 41.75"

I kicked the King Tours out of the bag - I had this weird moment at the range next to another guy using black Cobra irons and it made me feel some kind of way that I didn't like. I have issues...but from selling those I was able to not only get mint irons, but also some other goodies.

Bridgestone 221CB 5-PW

These remind me of Zxi7's with a less aggressive sole and smaller topline. Feel is superb. I soft-stepped some Modus 115x and I think I found the goldilocks zone with that shaft.

WedgeWorks 58 V Grind

My lob wedge was in need of a replacement and this made the most sense considering the normal conditions in the PNW. Hoping I don't run into any issues with the slightly higher bounce in our compact/crap bunkers.

2025 Toulon Atlanta H1

For a long time I've been annoyed at the flow neck hosel on my Las Vegas. It's never suited my eye. Found this Atlanta for an absolute steal. We'll see how it performs on course, but I like the shape. 34" is a bit shorter than I've played in recent years, but I've been tinkering with my setup and stroke (long overdue) and it seems to be working out. The flange line kinda bothers me, but trying to direct my focus more to the face so hopefully that resolves itself. If not, I have my eye on an Alcatraz Mini.

Sticking with the '22 Toulon LV. Putting setup and stroke tweaks have made it feel like a weapon again. The Atlanta is nice, but just not for me. Looking to sell it.

I made some small modifications to the LV. Cut it down to 34.25" (I didn't realize I had been playing it at 35") and threw on a fresh SuperStroke Pistol Tour. A couple years ago I added a charcoal paint fill to the top sightline as well as the wings. Recently realized I need something to draw my eye in more to the face so I used some white paint fill on just the topline. It seems to really help my focus. Had my best putting round probably ever last Thursday with 27 putts and +3.93 strokes gained.
