Different driver shaft profiles

I was recently fit into the Tensei 1k 70S for my PXG 0811X driver. Loved the feel of the shaft, very similar feel to the Modus 120 in my irons (actually another thread is touching on that subject). My understanding is the Tensei is a whiteboard profile. 
I also have been playing a Hzrdus Smoke Yellow 60 6.5 (x-stiff, counterbalanced) in my Mavrik SZ and really having good results and great feel. 
 

My question is, does anybody play different shaft profiles in different drivers? Is this odd?

Not odd at all.  I've played everything from a DI, UB, HD, Diamana ZF, PD, Tensei 1K, TPO 1K, Ventus Black and Blue, Aldila Silver 125 MSI, etc. in driver.  It's all about pairing the head with a matching shaft which may be high launching for and spinning for some models to others which are low launch and spin.

Odd - definitely not.   

 

Some people are more sensitive to the feel of the shaft loading than others - and therefore the stiffness profile of the shaft.  Those people's swing will be more impacted by changes in stiffness feel and tend to stick to shafts in similar profiles in order to get the best overall performance.

 

BUT there are also a good number of people who really are not as sensitive and can play a range of profiles equally well.  Those folks are free to pick shafts based on what would normally be secondary considerations - such as the shafts influence on the launch and spin - instead of the primary considerations.

I'd also be careful with those types generalizations.   The marketed "profile" tends to focus on the launch/spin characteristics - which is really more a result of the tip stiffness.  Yet a large part of the feel comes from the butt/middle stiffness.    So you can have two shafts that have different "profiles" but similar feels due to similarities in the butt/middle section of the shaft.  Or two shafts with "similar" profiles that feel very different because of differences in the butt/mid section.   e.g. Just based on my particular senstivities, the Aldila Rogue Black 95 and Silver 110 feel almost the same to me even though they have different profiles.

 

So just be careful about putting too much faith into those marketed profiles.   The only one golden rule of fitting is that the results you get are the only thing that matters.  So if that's what works best for you, keep doing what you're doing.

100% agree with this. Graphite design is a great example of this.  Many of their models have the same to subtly different handle sections with vastly different results depending on a player's swing
