Recent Golf Trip Happenings?

Every year my brother and I take a golf trip to celebrate one our birthdays. Two years ago it was North Carolina . Last year it was South Carolina. This past weekend it was his local area in Vegas, even though we didn't play a single course in Vegas (I'll get to that in a sec). Every trip we have an absolute blast and every trip something inevitably goes wrong, but all for the better. For example, in North Carolina we saw a fist fight break out on the tee box over something as dumb as a "you can't use the same ball I'm playing". In South Carolina, we saw a person in our group roll a ball through a wedding picture while at Harbour Town, (which is a massive feat if you have ever seen where they take pics at).

 

And this last trip was the cherry on top. We were on the third(?) hole at Wolf Creek, I was waiting next to my tee shot while my brother was waiting next his in the fairway when I heard a "THWACK" and then a bunch of swear words coming from my brother. The guy on the 4th tee box sent one over a hill and hit my brother directly on the top of his hand. Now, my brother is one of the tougher dudes I have ever known, but he even was hurting after this. After a few choice words for the wayward driver who didn't yell fore, we tried to play on. Two holes later we are standing in the fairway when we heard a "pop" and both in horror we watched as the parking brake broke on our cart and was headed straight into a canyon. As I was sprinting downhill to try and cut off the cart before it goes into the abyss, reminding me I need to do more cardio, the Golf Gods smiled down and the tires hit rock and sent the cart back towards the course and into a bunker. And yes, I drove that cart out of the bunker all while saying a silent prayer.

 

After all that "excitement" and my brothers hand swollen to the size of a ring bearer's pillow, we had to cut the next two rounds out and get x-rays. A few broken bones and some strong drinks later, we checked off another trip. On the way to the airport, i get a notification that my flight was cancelled and I could not find another flight until the next day. Not sure if any of who out there have hyped up a golf trip in Vegas to your coworkers or bosses the way I did, but needless to say it took some convincing and a few forwarded emails to prove I did not just stay an extra day because it's Vegas....  I have the best time on these trips with my brother, were a year apart and we both can play a little bit, but we both don't care what we shoot. I hope everyone out there gets to have these kinds of trips while they still can.

 

Wife said I need to up the life insurance policy before the next one.

I just got back from a golf trip in TN.  First day my buddy kept chunking his irons and his elbow starts hurting.  I gave him one of those strap brace things and he soldiers on for a few more days.  So we get back home and he goes to Tractor Supply to grab some bird seed.  He picked up the bag, his muscle pops and he ends up in the ER having surgery for Compartment Syndrome in his forearm. Another surgery followed the next day.  Eight months to hopefully regain full strength and feeling in his hand, the dominant one of course.  I will of course stop by with a sleeve of new balls for him this week.

Last fall in a member/guest, a guest who had a little too much to drink flipped a cart and broke his arm on the first night of the event. He missed out on playing, the club was nice enough to sub an employee in for him on his team, and he was back at the bar drinking by the next evening.

That has to be one of the most original comparisons I've ever read or heard. 

 

My only ring-bearer reference here is Frodo, and I don't remember him carrying a pillow...

We do a weekend golf outing to Prescott every year.  Saturday night involves a visit to "Whiskey Row."   Some excitement two years ago was witnessed by some members of our party. Pretty funny story that I didn't believe at first, but it made it to the papers.

A buddy and I went to Scottsdale for week in mid-May to play golf. Of all the memorable holes, at Troon North Monument, on hole 3, the one with the giant boulder in the fairway, he blows his drive way past it, a nice little cut about 280. Well, not wanting to miss the opportunity to hit the boulder, I pulled 3w and smack, hit the boulder on the fly. Not a great result of course, but a great memory. 

 

Second-best memory: After playing 18-36 holes for 6 days straight, on our last course, at Wildfire-Faldo course, on 18, I made a birdie: a great score on the final hole of our golf trip. 

 

Worst memory: Everything about We-Ko-Pa! Highly rated, I suppose, but if you go when it's over 100*, heck, at any temp, be aware that there is not one single drop of water for the players on the course: no coolers, no igloos, no nothing! Oh, you could buy a 12oz water from the cart person for $3.00 after paying $250 to play the course!!! I will never play there again.

There was a gentleman that posted here and think he's still around.  He hosted a yearly event with 26 or 28 guys at one of five locations.  All I remember is that someone said he had a hell of handshake, the kind that would break bones. 

 

We had a high school gym teacher with a handshake like that - his name was Mr. Bolinger and he carried a squeeze ball at all times.  His hands were massive - kids called him banana fingers.
