Ball moved during search. Replace ball. Can I clean it?

All is good. I don't personally see this version as superior to the USGA words provided earlier - "Rule 9.6 applies to player A whose ball was moved by an outside influence. When a ball is lifted because it was moved by an outside influence the player is allowed to clean it."

It's just that I had access to the R&A words but not to the USGA's. As I said, why can't they publish jointly on their home sites?

I am facing an interesting situation. I created an account to FB only in order to be able to post in that particular group. One hour after having created my account I got a message that my account has been cancelled, reason: I have breached or not obeyed the protocol or whatever they call it. The interesting part is that I had not yet written anything on FB nor sent anything nor shaped up my profile. Bizarre.

So, I challenged the cancellation as instructed and in less than a week my account was re-opened. So, I wrote one (!!) comment to the USGA Rules group and surprise surprise, my account was cancelled again!!!

The problem at the moment is that I have no access to that group as FB in it's immense wisdom is (again!!) checking out whether I could be allowed to use my account.

Facebook sucks big time.

I assume this rule sounds a lot more fair if the accidental movement while searching is someone stepping on their ball or driving a cart over their ball accidentally, as this would often result in a plugged ball. As I'm sure you all know, I find the rules of golf are meant to help the player, not hurt them.

I just click on the link and am able to read the page without signing in or trying to sign in.

That is correct but as I described in my earlier post FB has decided to make my joining in very difficult. During past 2 weeks my account has been shut down 4 times due to breaches towards whatever their rules are. The interesting/confusing thing is that I have written one single post (into the USGA group) and have not done anything else. Now, as my account has been cancelled (to be re-instated again in a few days to be cancelled again and so on...) I cannot read the group.

FB sucks big time, I can tell you.

I thought, from your previous posts, that you just wanted to be aware of the "rulings", ie, only read them.

Mr B

I understand that the USGA has recently been making some admin changes to their FB pages in an attempt to limit molestation from bot and spam posts. One of those features is that you cannot initiate a thread unless there is a picture on the profile. This is as much info as I have - I am not a tech person.

I know this is a couple of years old but I've just done my level 1 R&A rules exams and this situation was the third option as an answer to a question as to when you CAN clean your ball.

1st option - to see if it's cracked or cut

2nd - lifting ball when interfering with another player's play.

3rd - before replacing ball accidently moved on search.

The first two are absolute NO NOs!

So the 3rd option had to be correct answer - and was!

However, I'm in complete agreement with those who say it shouldn't be and caused me considering angst when answering this question as I felt all 3 should be NO cleaning and 3rd contravenes in essence improving your lie. If you walked up to your muddy ball (anywhere bar the green) under 'normal' course conditions you CANNOT lift it and/or clean. So I simply don't understand how this scenario is correct. As and when I do my Level 2 and attend seminars I will be challenging this. 😁

Before challenging you should get thoroughly acquainted with ALL the Rules related to cleaning, moving or lifting the ball as well as the general idea of combined penalties. After having done that I can only assume that you will no longer want to go through your challenge.
