Does Phil play a PGA event this year?

Seems like there are so many things we don't know about, let alone the ones we do, he needs to get figured out and golf may not really be his priority for some time.

Yep. Some here keep overlooking this basic issue. What if he is not back to in his own words "being the man I want to be." I think there's much more to the Phil story than we know. In a recent q&a with Shipnuck he said something sort of cryptic on Phil.

The X-factor in all of this were the lines in Mickelson’s statement about having “failed myself and others too” and taking time away to work on “being the man I want to be.” To me, that had little or nothing to do with Saudi Arabia. It felt like a cry for help. When I first started working on my book, someone in Phil’s orbit told me, “He has been skating on very thin ice for a very long time. All it is going to take is the right person to tap on that ice and he’ll fall through.” If Mickelson is, in fact, doing extensive self-examination and really working to tame his warring impulses, he might not be ready to return to public life six weeks from now. Only Phil knows the answer to that.

It would appear Phil is battling personal demons...

"Failed myself and others too" feels similar to Tiger's "transgressions" line from his scandal speech. Not suggesting that Phil has anything marital going on (I have no clue obviously), but it definitely sounds like its related to something deeper than just firing off some ill conceived comments. What sort of thin ice though? Financial? Professional? Personal? It certainly wouldn't shock anyone paying attention if Phil has some questionable professional and financial things going on.

I'm not really looking forward to whatever sideshow he creates if he decides to play - don't see him having much credibility to support whatever explanation he puts forth.

I have a feeling the whole saga will pan out to effectively be a scaled-up version of John Daly's Loudmouth trousers phase. It'll be ugly. It'll be indecorous. And it'll be cringeworthy.

I wouldn't be surprised if the PGA ask him to make a verbal televised apology as part of any return to a PGA event, and I doubt he would want to do this given his criticism of the tour and its leader.  That is a lot of humble pie that even Phil might not be able to stomach.

As others have already commented, I too think he will focus on trying to repair his relationship with the Saudi league, which will secure him a playing future as well being able to put two fingers up to Monahan.

Needs it for career Slam

Yes, everyone knows this. He has no chance of winning, a strained relationship at best with the USGA, it’s the week after the first Saudi event (which whether he plays in that still makes it more than a little awkward to show up) and apart from no chance of winning, he’s likely to shoot a million. He won’t be the confident, greedy, stick it to everyone ambassador he and Greg were planning on showing up at the majors this season.

Interesting - when did he file? He has to "reserve" his spot by filing to have the opportunity to play - so doesn't mean he's playing, but interesting nonetheless.

The "entrant lookup" doesn't appear to be active on the USGA's website so no way at the moment to even verify he has reserved a spot just in case.

Yep, not sure where they obtained the information or how reliable it is.

He’s a pretty arrogant guy. He still has plenty of fuel in the tank on the golf course, judging by the win last year at a tough place like Kiawah. The question to me is whether the USGA might block him from playing.

I don’t think they will, but that’s out my my you know what just like my guess he won’t end up playing.

If he plays in any major I also guess he’ll have crafted some statement ahead of time to make satisfy the Tour and the other bodies. But as arrogant as he is it could be full on Saudi and defiant - but that doesn’t seem to fit with the allusion to other issues.

Well that's insightful.  Sounds like Shipnuck was "the right person" to tap on the ice.

Say what you want about Mickelson, Shipnuck doesn't come off as a good guy.

Just saw some Twitter post from someone that had actual shots of the USGA entry numbers for Phil and Tiger, so apparently he entered. Still can't access that function on the website, maybe it will updated now that entries have closed and be up and running again soon.

So he reserved his spot if he wants to play.

Yes, he's totally evil for being a reporter who printed the words that actually came out of Phil's mouth while on the record. He probably kicks puppies too.

I'm not a fan of Shipnuck (or Phil). Don't care if he is a good guy or not. He simply reported what he was told by Mickelson. Phil may have thought it was off the record but Phil never actually denied what he was reported to have said. Phil apologized to everyone but the PGA Tour. There's like a whole lot more going on that we don't know about with Phil than simply the SGL stuff.

Maybe on the Champions Tour. Outside of his fluke win at Kiawah Phil has been awful the last 3+ years on the PGA Tour. His OWGR is wildly inflated due to his PGA win. W/O that win his world ranking world be between 250-300.

It feels like this whole self-exile thing is overdone based just on his comments.  I mean yeah he sounded dumb and greedy, but he didn't say anything so outrageous as to warrant essentially being locked away in hiding.  I mean, he didn't sexually assault anyone or run someone over with his car or anything.

I suspect he plays the PGA, at the presser he says he had time to reflect and wishes he chose his words more carefully, and gets back to playing golf.

Wild card is if he already knows there's a lot more stuff in the book about his gambling, consorting with criminals, shady business dealings, etc.

Jay Monahan had every right to be angry as FIGJAM was literally helping create the founding documents for a rival league. However, people like Rory McIlroy, dressed head-to-toe and cashing nine-figures+ from a company making their money from child slave labor, wagging their fingers at him and saying they'd "welcome him back" and "people make mistakes" was straight clown shoes.

https://www.si.com/golf/news/phil-mickelson-seeks-release-for-liv-golf-event-also-registered-for-pga-u-s-open

“Our client client Phil Mickelson is officially registered to play in the PGA Championship as well as the U.S. Open,’’ said Loy, who is co-president of the agency SPORTFIVE and Mickelson’s long-time agent. “We have also filed a request on his behalf for a release to play in the first LIV Golf Invitational in London, June 9-11. This request complies with the deadline of April 25 set forth by the PGA Tour to compete in a conflicting tour event.

“Phil currently has no concrete plans on when and where he will play. Any actions taken are in no way a reflection of a final decision made, but rather to keep all options open.”
