Wow.

The Telegraph article is behind a paywall so I can't really see it. But the snippet says:

"Six-time major winner must either appear in all the rebel tournaments or pay back a percentage of his fee and probably a penalty, sources say."

The headline notes his "fee" was 24 million pounds (a little more than 30 million dollars).

Well in defense of Phil... $30 million upfront to play 8 no-cut events (in addition to whatever prize purses he might win) is serious money even to a rich person.  That's like winning 4 majors plus the FedEx Cup in one year, money-wise.

The problem is that the Saudis have basically unlimited money and can just outspend the PGA tour.  So it is going to take a lot of guys to put ethics over dollars.  Phil does not strike me as an "ethics over dollars" type of guy.  I suspect his argument about "trying to help his fellow PGA tour players" is just his attempt to rationalize it in his own mind.

But that being said, it really does make me wonder what his motive is here. I really thought that after all the blowback he took recently that he would wash his hands clean of the Saudi stuff and put it behind him and move on. But instead he doubles down with the Saudis.

For all we know, Monahan banned him. There is no way the leader of any organization would just hand wave away the attempt of someone to create a direct competitor.

I get that Phil likes money. Who doesn't? But for one, he has already made a fortune. And two, he was in a position to make another small fortune over the next 15-20 years. He still has some time left playing on the PGA Tour (which would've meant continuing to get those big endorsement checks from KPMG and Callaway and whoever else). Then he could've transitioned to the Champions Tour where he would probably break every record and be the next Bernhard Langer. Which again means cashing some huge sponsorship checks for years. He's in his early 50's now, and with his fitness, he could remain highly relevant in competitive golf into his late 60's. Langer is 64 now and still pulling in some nice sponsorship coins. Gary Player doesn't even play anymore and still pulls in sponsorship money. So it's not like Phil was running out of opportunities to make some hay and needed one last windfall.

He now knows full well the kind of hit his image will take if he goes the Saudi route. He already learned that the hard way. So it strikes me as odd that he would feel the extra money that he will get from the Saudis is worth tarnishing his legacy over. Phil likes money, but he also likes his image.

PURE SPECULATION on my part here and nothing else.....

1. Phil is in some hot water financially. That's been widely rumored.

2. The Saudis dangled a lot of money in front of Phil ($30 million to commit to all 8 events?)

3. Phil quickly warmed to the idea as an easy way to pay off whatever debts he owes and signed away. Perhaps not fully realizing the risk.

4. His comments and actions were exposed by Shipnuck.

5. Phil realized he was now stuck between a rock and a hard place. Back away from the Saudis and try to repair his image (but still be stuck in his financial problem) or continue with the Saudis in order to get out of his financial trouble (but know full well that his image will be completely shot).

Again, nothing but pure speculation on my part. And again, I don't know if this Telegraph report is accurate nor do I have the full context of the story. No animals were harmed during the writing of this 🙃

Question is, with most or all his sponsors taking a leave of absence from him, does that guaranteed Saudi money outweigh the loss of that income. I don't know if he thought that they would walk away as quickly as they did with his remarks last month.

Quoting myself here as an update. This article spells it out (with no paywall)

Also says Louis and Sergio look to be in for the opener.

Nice.

The melt down and sponsors fleeing made it a fait accompli.

His income evaporated.

And this is a great deal for phil. He get say 30MM and I assume he could get more “lump sums” in subsequent years.

And with the purses and level of competition, he could clean up on that front as well.

Assuming the story is right, Phil is now the face of the LIV. I’d think he’d be looking for a $200MM+ deal if it works out long term.

There is no way Phil misses the PGA Championship, is there? Like I get the PGA Tour can do whatever it wants, especially considering FIGJAM was basically trying to extort them. But everyone else really can stuff it.

Actually your conjecture does make sense. If the Telegraph report is correct, and he is in financial straits, point 5 is well taken.
If he is not in financial trouble he could easily come back to the tour and repair.
So PM is registered to play in the PGA. Let’s call that correct. If the telegraph is correct he’s also going to play in LIV setting up pressure on Monaghan.
Classic Phil gambling move.

If Phil really is in financial troubles as the rumors would indicate, I just can't imagine how he's managed to get himself in that much trouble. Just gambling losses and bad investments? His total career earnings on and off the course must be well into the hundreds of millions of dollars. That's a lot of bad bets!

He was insider trading for relative peanuts compared to his net worth.

#5 is also a classic example of the type of people foreign governments look for in order to turn state secrets.

At the time, I doubted everything that was being said and/or released from Phil's PR group about why they split.  I vehemently posted here at the forum it had something to do with Bones and Phil's brother.

Many people, here at the forum, accepted that line of krap in the press about "Phil and Bones needing to to break after 20 years" or "Bones' knees can't take it anymore."

The truth will be known very soon.

So is Phil & Sergio gone from the PGA Tour forever?  Their request to play LIV got denied.  Obviously they're going to go play anyways.

If they play they are done. I don't think Phil really cares. He's going to make a lot more filthy lucre with the Saudi's than he would on the PGA Tour (where you have to play well to make money). With the Saudi's he gets paid handsomely no matter what.

The ppl that believed Phil’s PR teams reasoning for the split are the same ones that believed Bryson’s split from his caddy on a Wednesday night before a tournament was amicable and planned in advance. 🙄

Phil needs to rip the band-aid off and play next week as well as face the press.  The media will ask him stuff like are you playing LIV, why did you disappear for 3 months etc. I still have a feeling Phil's gonna end up ditching LIV.

Nantz did something I’d never seen him do before. The voice of CBS Sports, a man capable of waxing rhapsodic on most any subject related to the game and who has shared an intimate relationship with Mickelson for three decades, gave the question the old Heisman stiff arm. He acknowledged that he had spoken to Mickelson and said he was going to keep their conversation private.
