Had my first round of the season today

Just finished my first round of the season today. I HATE WIND. It rarely helps me, aim for it to push it back towards the green, hit your target line and what happens? Dead straight. Meanwhile mis-hits get pushed even farther offline. It was nice to get out though. My chipping is atrocious, so many duffed chips. What was not a problem a couple years ago is possibly the worst part of my game. 

 

The course I played was very weird. It has a bunker, and a few water hazards but they're easily avoided. It seemed to me like a combination of both links and parkland style. Fairly flat, quite open, but not a lot of undulations. The fairways are tight, but the rough wasn't penal and you could miss by a lot and not be punished. All of the greens were tiny though and with my atrocious chipping, that caused my score to be pretty high, 32 over 104. On the plus side though, because of the wind I got a fair amount of practice with practicing of adjusting my grip to try and hit draws and fades, particularly with the driver. I'm no artist with it but I may have some ideas on what to do 

 

Altogether, a frustrating, yet fun day. I will probably be setting up a short game lesson, or getting a refresher of the seminar I attended at my local pgass, and spending a fair amount of time at the short game practice area at a course near me.

Just played my first last Thursday. Pretty rusty and it was windy same as you. It was really nice getting out though. Hopefully more courses open up here shortly.

My home course had tentatively set an opening date of the 12th,but we had some bleepy weather last week. They're in a lower lying area so it tends to get pretty soggy. Because of that they tend to be on the conservative side when it comes to opening. Hopefully the wind will help dry it out and they'll be opening up soon.

Ah yes, wind.  The thing I'd like to know is, how can the wind be in your face on every hole when the holes run in a bunch of different directions?  It's a freak of nature.

Just think in a few months, the temps will be warmer and breezes lighter.

It has been a very windy and chilly spring around here. Like the wind always being in your face, it seems that every Wednesday is calm, 50s/60s, and sunny - then every Saturday is raw, blustery, and cloudy with temps in the 40's. Lots of soggy fairways and washed out bunkers, as well. 

 

My home course hasn't fared too well over the winter either. I'm not sure what happened, but a very high percentage of greens never fully recovered from the Fall aeration and there were still holes everywhere. Then, of course, Spring aeration came last week so they are all messed up again. It feels like I haven't made a putt on the course in months.

 

My scores through all of that have been elevated to be sure - about ten strokes above where I would expect them to be. It has been pretty rough.

 

But, I'm generally striking the ball well and am encouraged by the potential I see in my game right now. With some more work and more favorable conditions, I think my scores will get back to where they need to be.

Is it really a freak of nature though? I mean, my grandpa always had to walk 4 miles to school, uphill both ways, through 12 foot snowdrifts.
