El Paso Golf

All I’ve found on El Paso, Texas golf seems to be a few years old. Just wondering where the best courses are and if the private clubs are worth it? I will only be living down there a year and then I’ll be hopefully moving somewhere greener.

Butterfield Trail is the best public option. Fazio design fun layout interesting bunkering and definitely feels like desert golf. Nice clubhouse and best practice facility. Rates even for 18 on weekends feel incredibly fair and it doesn’t seem to ever be as crowded as the other public options. 

 

From there painted dunes is alright and the others (Lone Star, Ascarate) are probably what you expect for public options in a town not known for golf. 

 

I haven’t made my way over there for golf yet but Las Cruces isn’t too far and has a few public options that look very much worth the drive. 

 

For private options El Paso CC has been around over 100 years and has very nice facilities. Obviously the more expensive and prestigious of the private options if that matters to you. Coronado is a nice option too and has a beautiful setting on Franklin Mountain. Both are obviously going to be better than the public options. As far as being worth it that means something different to everyone but for what you pay for these clubs compared to a lot of true country clubs across the country I’d say they both would provide good value.

Thanks for being the only person to post. I’ve been in El Paso for a few months and will probably update this thread for those that find themselves moving to El Paso. 
 

So far the best public course I’ve played is painted dunes. Butterfield was ok, but seems to be run done and course condition was not as nice as painted dunes. Lonestar is kinda small and pace of play was ungodly slow, six hour round. Underwood on post is horrible all around and has burnt out greens. Still need to get to NM, but the old timers say it’s worth the drive.

 

I took the family to look at Coronado and they have some really nice facilities. If I was going to be here for a few years that’s probably where I would join. They have a full bar hooked to the mens room which I thought was cool. Only downside is like most CCs they nickel and dime you for everything. Every time I asked about something it had an additional cost. What was interesting is that the main office people giving me the tour didn’t know any of the pricing beside membership.

Horizon Golf Course is also a good one.

But my favorite is Painted Dunes.  There's a group of really great guys who play there weekdays around 08:00
