Arccos

Count me in as a happy Arccos customer. Yes, you have to go back and manually log some shots which I do after the round but they are so few I don't mind it and the dataset you're able to pull from it makes it worth every penny. I do have a Z82 that I use as well and find the two together give me what I am looking for.

Do you think you could drop Arccos and get what you need from Z82, outside of shot tracking?

Can't say that I would. Maybe because of the stage and length of time I've been playing but I value being able to go back and seeing my distances and recalling conditions with those distances. I like being able to looking at my round after the fact and looking at my club selections based on the shots I hit.

I love Arccos. I only use it with my phone and hardly ever have issues with it missing an approach shot (though often it misses tap in putts - which takes literally a second to correct.

On course, I generally spank a drive, walk to it, pull out my phone, click on the 'distance to the pin' button, that allows me to drag the pin to the  correct position on the virtual green,  Arccos then gives me the correct yardage to that pin position (taking into account wind etc). I hit the shot and because the distance estimate is so good, I'm generally pin high ish (maybe 40 yds left/right, but pin high)!

When I've putted out, as I walk to the next tee, the phone comes out again. I check it's recorded the correct number of putts and also look at the virtual green for the last hole. Arccos tracks your footsteps/route across the green so you can see exactly where you've walked, thus know exactly where the flag was, so can drag the pin to that exact position (in case your initial pin placement, that you estimated when you were miles away in the fairway, was slightly out) - that way you know the putting distances are accurate too.

That's it! It sounds wordy/confusing perhaps, but it takes a matter of ten or twenty seconds per hole to have perfect data - which is then crunched at your leisure when you get home with millions of different stats to really help you choose what to focus on in practice. I absolutely adore Arccos.

Once I ditched the Caddie it’s been great with phone only, will definitely keep it past the year free trial.

I have a real love/hate relationship with Arccos.  I’m on my second subscription, I cancelled the first because I got tired of “fooling around” with Arccos during a round.  I started with using my phone which worked ok then got the Link when it became available.  It was more convenient but not as accurate IMO.

I restarted the sub when I got an Apple Watch (Series 6).  The Watch has worked best for me and I’ve learned not to “fool” with Arccos during a round.  If it misses a shot, which it still does occasionally, I can easily edit it after the round.  That said I still get tired of it from time to time and take the sensors off for a while. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I think it’s worth it from the perspective of giving you actual feedback of your goal. If you want to lower handicap 3 strokes over the season you will see how each round your game fared compared to that type of player. It emphasizes where your strengths are and where there are areas you can improve. There will be shots you’ll need to edit but I’ll say the caddie link is great at helping to avoid this. For me it gave me insight on how much I get to work on my wedge short game control to hit more GIR. i knew it wasn’t a strength but I figured up and downs or putting was worse when in reality my putting has been good for the most part. Also I sometimes thought being wild off the tee on a bad day was my weakness but my distance I hit it makes up for any accuracy and the occasional penalty stroke. It’s worth the free trial for sure to get an idea of where you are losing strokes compared to your goal and what an actual x handicap looks like.

I have a question about the specifics of how you keep score/post your handicap. I have always used an app (golfshot and now thegrint) to post score, and thegrint to both keep score and post directly. If you keep score in arccos, how do you post to GHIN?

You’d have to post in GHIN app outside of arccos app.

Just noticed my membership renewed and holy moly that's not a cheap membership. Promptly emailed them to cancel my membership $155.88/yr which was like $212 Canadian which is a lot for how long my golf season is here.

For the cost of a hot dog at the turn once a month, I think it's probably worth it. It's been the most reliable shot tracking device I've used.

I also believe the subscription model lends well to a sustainable company/continued development. I've used the shotscope v3 smart watch previously and I wonder how they pay their developers once a purchase is done (they probably take home $50 of that $180 I spent best-case?).

Shot Scope's revenues are multiple times larger than Arccos, and they have more employees than Arccos. Amazing what one can find out with a little research.  🙂

Did any of you guys use the “link” ? I think I’m giving up on it after it screwed up 4 holes in. I have another month before I can cancel my subscription, I’ll give the phone only a try till then.

I used 18 Birdies for the past two years but just switched to Arccos for honest actual club distances. I got so used to using my phone with 18 Birdies that it was a no-brainer to stick with the phone for Arccos. I used my phone like the pros use that big notebook hanging out of their back pockets like it’s some kind of stupid fashion statement.

Yeah the phone is the easiest once you get used to it, I don’t mind it in my pocket anymore. The link is now in a junk drawer and I ended up keeping the subscription as well. I like the round summaries and the shot history per club

My two cents...

I used the Link and it ended up snapping on me mid-round when I went to sit in the golf cart. I use the Apple Watch and absolutely love it because I get yardages that I can quickly glance at.

I would not recommend Arccos if you are someone that doesn't get to play >50 rounds/year. Also wouldn't recommend it if you don't care about practicing to get better. To me that's the point of getting the data - knowing 2-3 you could work hard at to improve your handicap.
