Thank you for posting this. I’m a longtime blade user that has been very close to pulling the trigger on 221s for a couple of weeks now. I could use a little help with distance, though, so the 225s intrigue me.

please continue to update your findings.

I actually just sold a full set of 221s! They are absolutely stunning irons and so compact! My original thought was to combo them with the 225s but I just hit the 225s so good I didn’t see a reason. Plus the size in the short irons look so similar. I actually like the feel of the 225 better than the 221🙄

Great review, thanks. I'm eyeballing some 225s myself. I notice the PW is only 44* and GW 49*. What are folks doing wedge wise after that with the 225s? Unless I get some new wedges I was going to stick with my Glide 3.0 54*/58* combo.

I went with a new set of T-22s 48, 53, & 58. I’ve was actually playing a sm8 set at 53 and 58 with a set PW at 48. I ordered my irons 1/2” long so my set pw is basically just like my old 9 iron. My distance gaps have been spot on.

I'm 1 month in to my 2 month wait for these. Let's go Mizuno!! Ordered a 49 T22 and 3 FliHi to match. All in Nippon 115x.

I’ve actually been thinking about trying the 3 fli-hi. I will probably pull the trigger at some point this spring 🤣

My 225 set stops at PW. I then play a 48 -52 - 56 - 60 set up.

I have also messed around with blending the 221 set at the 8 iron.

this would play:

225 in 4,5,6,7,8

221 in 8,9,PW,

then use a 50 - 54- 58 set up.

the 225 8 iron is 34*, the 221 is 38*.

The 225 4 iron is explosive and so easy to hit.

the sets blend seamlessly. I prefer the slightly softer feel of the 221, plus the 4* gapping vs 5* gapping in short irons.

the short irons in the 225 are still perfectly capable.

there is also a lot of concern about fliers with the hollow body irons. I have a ton of rounds on these irons and have not experienced a single flier.

If your still waiting to get your set, hang in there! They are well worth the wait!

I really needed to hear that haha. Thanks for posting the review. I'm looking forward to mines. Barring anything crazy, I don't plan on buying any new irons after this set, so it's going have to be my gamer for a long time.

Very happy with my set so far. Still trying to figure out the gap wedge, and so I have a 48 degree Vokey on order as a challenger. I like the look of the Gw but it's going extremely high and the sole interaction around the greens is not working for me. But the other clubs are great. Powerful, forgiving, sleek. 👍

Loved them in the fitting bay. Hated them on the course. Really struggled getting them through the turf quick enough. The 223 on the other hand was a gem, but not enough gains in comparison to p770’s.

Is it just me or does there seem to not be many people liking these.

I've seen posts on various forums - they are extremely likable. Trackman gives low spin numbers but on the course they get up high and are extremely powerful. I like the 223s but have a couple of 225's if the swing is not so fresh at times.

I recently bought a whole set and couldn't get them to work for me, I am simply too low of spin player. I am keeping the 4 and 5 iron as they are great to blend and have fit in nicely with my JPX 919T. Way more forgiving than that set at the top end.

They won't feel exactly like mizunos of the past if you are a mizuno traditionalist (they feel fine), but I can see how these would compete (and beat) anyone looking at a P790 or something in that category. I just couldn't get used to the lack of consistency in the scoring irons due to spin issues, or lack thereof.

Honestly the best set of irons I've ever owned.  I have 4 rounds on them and countless practice sessions.  Every round so far has just been superior performance from them, which is something I've never had before.  I keep staring in disbelief shot after shot.  They just go straight, hit the number, and have no surprises (other than the continued results).  I am seriously considering ordering a 2nd set as a backup because I'm petrified if something happens to these that I would never get the magic back.

I'm sure a crap round is coming but that'll surely be my issue and not the 225's.

I've got a set of 225s (5-PW) on order (with 950 GH NEO shafts) I fell in love immediately but I am a little concerned about size and turf interaction. I hit them two times during indoor fittings but haven't had the opportunity to take them for a spin on grass. I don't normally hit off mats so it was definitely a different feel during the fitting than I am used to.

I am replacing my MP-62 (6-PW) / MX-300 (4-5) combo set I've had since I was in high school. I've always disliked the blended set because of the big jump in feel and hotness as the set breaks. I comfortably play a fade but have a decent ability to control shape and trajectory with the MP-62s. With the MX-300s I can only really reliably hit a draw on the course. They just feel a little chunky and offset for my swing and I'd prefer to have the 62s straight through the bag.

I got back into playing more frequently last year after moving to the burbs and am fortunate to be able to play/practice a few times a week during the season. Now that I feel pretty good with my game, I know that I am losing a ton of shots on thin mishits with the MP-62s, and inconsistent play with my 4 and 5 iron.  FWIW I am currently playing at 13 but feel pretty confident I'll be flirting with single digits by the end of the season with or without my new clubs 😅

Does anyone have experience with the 225s and/or the MP-62s or MX-300s that might be able to give me a comparison?

  • Will the sole of the 225s (which largely is the same as the 223s, I believe) feel chunky to me like the MX-300s?
  • How would the 223s compare in "forgiveness" to the 62s? I didn't demo the 223s because I was set on getting something easier to hit than my 62s.

Would you say they dig a bit ?

Not really, for me they sort of bounced of the turf instead of cutting through it. Must admit I play on slightly firmer turf most of the time.

I have played the 62s and currently have the 225s. They don't have a single thing in common except for the brand name. Both are awesome sets but they're different species. The 62s feel almost indistinguishable from a blade -- solid piece of forged metal with a little cavity for a smidge of forgiveness. They are traditionally lofted, thin soled, buttery feel.

The 225s are thick, hollow, strong-lofted and powerful irons with a nice feel for the type of iron they are, but it's not the kind of dense thud you get from a one-piece forging.

I'm coming from MP-20 blades and am trying the 225s this year for the easy distance and forgiveness. But I am well aware that I am sacrificing control and feel and have no illusions about the fact that I'm moving to an entirely different category of iron than the blades (or MP-62s).

Super helpful, thank you for this.

The 225s felt great during my indoor fitting but I only hit other players distance irons, so most had similarly thick soles AFAICT.

My concern now (largely overthinking it because I'm waiting for my irons to come in) is that I'm going to struggle with a wider sole once I get them out onto the course. I've always loved my 62s (and kind of disliked the feel of the MX-300s) but I need the help that the 225s offer.

I guess a larger sole might be something I can / should get used to? Unfortunately there will be no way to tell until I get them in my hands.

I'm essentially in the same boat. I have been hitting the 225s, but only off of mats. The real test will be on grass. This is one reason I haven't sold my blades yet.

I feel like the cambered sole on the 225s help them get through the turf much more effectively than the prior generation. I’ve played a lot of blade sets in the past and will say they to not feel like a blade going through the turf but they are not far off. It is an adjustment coming from blades but well worth wile for the extra forgiveness. I have been at least 5 strokes better since putting the 225s in the bag and selling my MP5s. I’m hitting greens a lot more often now.

Thanks, I am happy to hear that we are on the same page. Fingers crossed I will have the same success with them!

I can always count on 2 or 3 not-that-mishits a round and I am hoping that the 225s will let me get away with a few thin strikes.
