After much testing this year, I am sticking with the 225's in the bag.  I have been really impressed with not only how the feel, but how they perform on my mis-hits.  When I get a good swing on it travels the distance I expect, and I have not had the flier issue some hollow bodies have.

I tried them again the ST Pro in the fitting bays.  225 had them beat in ball speed and feel.  ST Pro. was good, and many may just prefer the look at address which is more of the shiny chrome than the dull matte.  I think the biggest difference for me was that in comparison the ST Pro was more punishing on mis-hits.  Not just in distance/direction, but the feel on mishits was significantly more punishing.  Add that to an already click-y feel and they just were not for me.

I am excited to see what the year brings with these clubs, and think that they will serve me well.

I didn’t notice any difference in feel from the MP-20 HMB’s ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

They we’re more aesthetically pleasing than the HMB. The shorter blade length was noticeable, top line and narrow sole was subtle, honestly I couldn’t tell a difference in offset at address or the camber with my 46y old eyes, they are never going to look like a blade with their top line. The 225’s do look great with the smaller footprint than the HMB, akin to the P770 but cleaner.

My HMBs are 1/2 over standard with Modus 105 s hs/x1 so it’s not apples to apples since the 225 had a Modus 115s at standard length but I got much less spin with the MP-225’s. I know the lofts are stronger by 2*, but the spin difference from the Mp-20 HMB to the Mp-225’s was around 700rpms.

Even though I had more spin with the HMB’s, the distance was about the same since my HMB’s are 1/2 over.  My dispersion was tighter with the 225’s. I think the mixture of slightly shorter playing length and a shaft weight that’s a better fit for me contributed to that more than the club head though.

If I had to chose between the two clubs and money wasn’t a factor…… the 225’s without question win out, but are they such an improvement over the HMB’s to upgrade for me, that’s a big no.

I much prefer a more traditional lofted clubs so you’d think I’d prefer the HMB loft progression over the 225’s, but I don’t at all. In fact that would be a reason to move into the 225’s for me…….. sure, their lofts are jacked, but they offer a GW.  For me it’s just a number on the bottom, but the 225’s feel like a more complete set going from 4-GW, it’s basically like going from 3-PW in a traditional lofted set.

Sincce the MP-20 HMB doesn’t offer a GW, going from 4-PW just feels incomplete.

I really wish Mizuno would have ditched the 5* increments down low and just went with 4* separation with the MP-20 HMB, then offered a GW so the loft progression would play more traditional

I would have loved to have lofts go

7i      32*
8i      36*
9i      40*
PW    44*
GW   48*

it just would have felt like a more complete set like the 225’s

PXG does this with their 0211DC’s as well.

I think if you are going to jack the lofts on clubs, it’s only fitting to provide a GW ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Since the PXG 0211’s are priced so well (I’m a veteran so it’s $75 a club) that even with the added money for a Steelfiber fc115 upcharge, I’m considering selling my HMB’s and buying the PXG’s and a big selling point for me is having a GW in the set.

I haven’t hit or seen the 0211’s so who knows, I may hate them, but I did hit a a used set of 0311 a couple of years ago (I don’t know which Gen) and they felt great so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I just moved my new set on. They felt really bad compared to the Srixon ZX7 set I picked up in case Mizuno continued to delay through the spring. The shots I hit, both good and bad, were all consistent outcomes but the feel was just unsatisfying. I know outcomes should be the most important thing in golf, but I just didn't enjoy hitting them on the range or the course.

Exactly what I set mine to with a t22 in the 48 spot. Could not be happier with these irons!

I’m half tempted to bend mine 1* weak from 6-7-8, keep 9 at 41* then tweak the PW 1* strong, plus pick up a 225 GW so it looks like

4i.     22

5i.     25

6i.     29

7i.     33

8i.     37

9i.     41

Pw.    45

GW.   49

1 thing I don’t like about my HMB’s compared to my MP-37’s is that my largest gap with the Mp-37’s is 14y and smallest is 11y, whereas my HMB’s have a 19y gap and a 9y gap 😬

im changing to graphite, so I’d have to see where I’m at on my gapping because I think it will change due to the 3/8 increments I plan on going instead of 1/2 inch as well, but the PXG 0211DC’s are appealing due to having a GW, a SF fc115 and short money doesn’t make me feel to bad if they don’t work out as expected.

Yeah I didn’t even bother trying the set with standard lofts. I had mine bent before I even hit them. I have nice 10 to 12 yard gaps from my 3 iron to the t22 48 deg. I will never understand why mizuno does that. Who wants 15 + yard gapping unless your playing a minimalist type set with like 8 clubs?🤣

Same for me.   I posted my review over in the 221/223/225 Mizuno Irons thread but essentially while I like the look of the 225 and the 7 iron tested well off matts...once I got on the course I just disliked the feel and especially not keen on the difference in 8- PW.  I just prefer the more consistent feel and performance  from my 919 HMPs.  I did give the 223 another go and its really nice off the grass and have ordered a set of those.

Anyone compare the 225 to Rogue ST pro?

I did. I did a blind club grab and narrowed it down to these two. Went with the 225 after blind testing the final two. I kept going back and grabbing 225. In my gut, I’m glad I did because I went with a 2-iron and I really don’t want a mixed set like that. Not saying it’s wrong, just didn’t want to mess with my OCD. Lol

Great review, thanks. I'm eyeballing some 225s myself. I notice the PW is only 44* and GW 49*. What are folks doing wedge wise after that with the 225s? Unless I get some new wedges I was going to stick with my Glide 3.0 54*/58* combo.

I have a SM8 48 degree, will use that as my GW.

I'm also contemplating to a mix set, 221 8~pw, 225 5~7, what do you all think please?

My son in law, a former college player and still scratch, said the same thing about turf interaction with the 225s.  He fortunately got to test them before plunking down the cash for them.  He bought the 223s though because the turf interaction was much better and he hit them really well.

After a demo session on Friday, I picked up a set of 5-PW with the Project X IO 6.0 shaft over the weekend. Put them in play today and I cannot say enough good things about them. The 225 are just incredibly soft feeling when struck well and the ball really seems to jump off the face. The clubs I am coming from (0211 DC's) were actually stronger lofted but the 225's are easily a club longer. Not sure if this is because of the heads or the shafts or just the combo. Also, I was so surprised that this shaft works as well as it does for me. I would not have thought I had enough swing speed for it especially in the 6.0 but it really is a a perfect match for me with the 225 heads. Maybe it is just new club romance but it's a great one!

The honeymoon stage is still going strong with the 225s. The club hoe in me wants to try something new all the time but these irons just continue to preform excellent for me. These are the iron of the year IMO.

Finally got mine a couple of weeks ago, 4-GW PX lz 5.5 hard stepped.  I love these, very forgiving but with 'feedback' when you don't put a good swing on them.  They don't penalize me much but they let me know I got away with one.

Good feel for the category, high flight bu I have noticed low spin as others have.  I am playing around with different balls to get the right balance.

I'm liking:

  • Love the looks and performance
  • Feel is good for this category as is the feedback on off hits
  • Great selection of shaft options with no up charge (just need to mind the 'out of stock' supply chain issues)
  • Turf interaction is actually not a problem but I can see this being an issue for shallow swings
  • Loft's are a bit aggressive but not ridiculous

Downside:

  • Low spin (still trying to match up a ball but getting close)
  • Wait times! Mine took about 11 weeks, well worth it but wow!

Absolutely love the feel & playability of 8-gw

The 7-4 irons are rocket launchers

I have no hesitation whatsoever hitting 4 iron off the fairway...long, high & straight

^ This exactly. Honestly I am not sure why the Project X IO shafts do not get more attention than they do. IMO they are the best feeling if not best performing Project X shaft I have ever hit (demo'd or played).

Normally play a TP5 (current model is a bit too soft, TP5x is actually closer to previous TP5 for me) but am getting better results with Pro V1, am also experimenting with Pro V1x but it's giving me a little too much spin.  Your mileage may vary... this is what I've experienced for my swing.

Thinking about getting a 2 or 3 iron to use as a tee club.  I play blades, and prefer a smaller top line vs. a driving/utility iron that is clunky.  Any feedback specifically for the long irons?  For anyone gaming a 2/3 iron can you still hit them from the turf or would they strictly be a tee club?

In my case, it's an MP-20 HMB in place of a 225, but I'm using a 2 iron above my 3-PW set.  I largely use it off the tee, but will hit it from the deck from time to time.  I don't find it particularly difficult to hit.

I should add the disclaimer that I've always been something of a high trajectory player.

I have Steelfiber i95 in it presently, but am considering replacing that with a Recoil shaft.  That's just a back burner idea, so to speak, not something I'm planning on acting on immediately.

Finally found some free time to take my 225 irons to the range.....ordered them based upon reviews only and had not hit them prior to ordering. Liked the appearance of the heads when I saw them at retail but that was the extent of the introduction. I was absolutely stunned at how good these irons were performing during a couple of range sessions. From the looks at address to the feel of all the irons throughout the set, I was very impressed. Definitely a stronger, more penetrating ball flight (which was to be expected) but surprisingly consistent with regards to both direction and distance.

Historically, I have struggled with excessive spin rates/ballooning off of the mid-short irons but I have always played/gravitated towards a forged player's CB for less offset, shorter blade length from heel to toe, good feel and some degree of forgiveness. Unfortunately, for me personally at least, heads that fit into this category have always produced too much spin and made distance control on windy days extremely challenging. After seeing the ball flight of the 225's, there is no doubt in my mind that iron play on windy days will no longer be such a major battle.  Combine that with a head profile that is visually appealing with solid feel and I could not be more pleased.
