Played with an 87 year old lady today…..

Brought my brother in law to my club one year to play a round(they live far away and can only visit every few years).  Starter points to a small fellow sitting on a bench asking if we mind if he joins us.  Not at all.  Fellow was 88 years at the time, played the red tees, and put it down the middle all day.  Walked nine holes with us.  Turns out he spent time as an elected representative in our federal government, owned a store that catered to farmers in the area.  Moved to our club from his old one to be closer to home to take care of his wife.  Very interesting and engaging fellow.

Always went over to chat with him if I saw him.  He'd be about 100 now, but even the GM at our club isn't sure if he is still with us.  He pretty much stopped playing a few years ago, and had moved into a nursing home not long after.  They had told him he was always welcome to come out and didn't need an invitation(which was exactly what I wanted to hear).  I learned that day that I hope I can swing a club at that age.  I don't care about hitting the ball, just swing a club.

I often play with my Dad (80) and his buddy (83).  They walk and they keep such a pace that it's hard to keep up with them.  Short hitters of course, but it's always fairways and greens, they don't lose balls and they are cool to play with, never a problem, never complaints.  I also play a quick 9 sometimes with this guy who is 84, he rides a one sit cart and hits the ball real solid.  He hits like 100 balls every day and then off for 9 holes.  These guys make me wonder what I'm missing in life, because they are old but they don't spill all the beans.

Let's just say it:   Many, many (not all) young golfers suck.   They have no etiquette or regard for the course or other players.  And I don't want to be the cranky old man to tell them to turn off their ****ing music and stop moving in my peripheral vision.

Give me old people every time!  They are universally more friendly.

Ya know.... I actually enjoy playing with older people much more so than people my age. Younger people?? ugh... imagine this guy and his friend going off from the championship tee and and hit their drivers almost 90* left or right... now THAT'S damn annoying.

Sure they may not even have a 250yd tee shot, but they play without ego, they are friendly usually and I love watching them enjoy themselves.

It makes me relax more and I have ZERO problem waiting for them before I can hit my next shot.

But yea I enjoy watching them enjoy life. It reminds me to be kinder to people in general.

Yes, so much this.  I played with a younger guy yesterday and he was always standing right behind me just enough so I could see him just in view.  I should have said something to him but by the time it had really started to annoy me, enough time had passed that I would come off as a dork who was blaming him for my bad play.  I swear though on one hole he was standing in his spot and I went to the other side of the tee deck and I stand back up and he's right behind me....sigh.

Back in topic, I enjoy playing with the older crowd as well.  They can be fun.

Amazing skills for an 81-year-old! A remarkable level of play and a great motivation for all who aspire to continue playing well into their golden years.

When I started playing regularly I was 26. One day I went with my dad and he said we're going to play with a guy who was 75. He told me don't be surprised when he beats you. The guys name was bud. This guy played golf like he was still 25. He consistently shot in the 70s and wasn't short off the tee. I ended up being really good friends with him and playing a lot of golf together. You could always find bud practicing on the putting green for hours or on the course playing. Old guys always have the best stories and we're just built different!

I used to play nine holes early in the morning (6 a.m.) and was usually paired with senior golfers. When I started golfing, I learned a lot from them. They are also very chill and share their stories on and off the course. Enjoy this stress-free round to start a day.

In the mid 90’s, I played in a Dakotas tour pro-am with an 81-year-old woman. She was a 20 handicap. It was me and one other pro, two guys that were about 29 years old and single digits, and this lady.

The format was each group had to take one of the pro scores and one of the ams best net scores for each hole.

On the par 3,s This lady went 4, two, two, one!  And the ace was with a driver that ricocheted off a rake that was inside of a bunker!!!

So for the par 3’s, she was seven under net on her own ball!

The other pro and I somehow had a best ball of nine under.  Between her and the other two amateurs, they got to 22 under! Lol!  Literally none of the three shot under their handicap. Was the perfect ham and egg situation.  Our two ball best ball was 31 under.

I think I shot about 71 on my own ball and didn’t finish in the money but because they paid out for the team, both me and the other pro (he shot 67)  made $700 each  that day!

We refused to let her buy drinks and got her pretty hammered on wine and peppermint schnapps.  She said it was the most fun she’s ever had in a round of golf in her entire life. And I have to say, it definitely ranks up there for me as well.

We stayed in touch for a few years. But unfortunately, she passed away.
I’m happy to say when I think of her it makes me smile from ear to ear…

Awesome story.  The kind of thing you remember for the rest of your life and puts a smile on your face.

Was just a friendly event.  We were a four person team, each playing our own ball.  One BB out of 4.   She had very old clubs and a flying elbow. stall and flip move,  Pretty animated swing,  She was playing the up tees, maybe 5200 yards at the most.  A really good poke was about 170 for her.  She probably shot in the high 80’s.  Maybe 5 pars and 2 or three doubles.  She was fun to play with, had a good sense of humor and was interesting to talk to.  She clearly enjoyed her golf and maybe could shave a few strokes off with some more modern equipment.  She had what looked like a 200 CC driver head with about 9 or 10 degrees loft.  I left the round with a couple of thoughts.  I would be pleased to hit it like her when I am in my late 80’s.  Also, I enjoyed golfing with her more than with several of my “peers”.

Keep an open mind when you are paired up with an older lady.   YMMV.

Back when I was at the peak of my game I showed up to a scramble event and  learned that the co-worker who was supposed to join me had bailed.  Then I saw that I was going to be playing with two older women.  One looked to be in her 60s and the other her 70s.  I started to turn to leave and bail myself when I ran into one of the event organizers.....now I had to stay.  I was so bummed waiting for the round to start just dreading it.   As it turned out these two women were regular playing partners and both could flat out play.  One in fact lived on the 15th hole of the course we were playing and had won the women's club championship more than once.  One a veterinarian and the other the wife of the owner of a local car dealership.  Since my playing partner had bailed we took turns playing the extra ball.  Additionally, they were playing from the forward tees and hitting every fairway.  We eagled the opening hole and went on to win the event by five shots.  You can't judge a book by its cover.
