Comparable driver shaft options

Odd question but it’s an odd shaft… I decided to play around with an old driver shaft yesterday: I wanted to try something shorter and I had this in my shaft bin.

I will say I had really good results with it to say the least. My question is what is comparable to this ATTAS in a 60g? Hoping someone could throw out some ideas (paging @Valtiel hahahaha).

thanks in advance!

This is the JDM/International graphic version of what became the Elements Earth/Wind/Fire shaft lineup from 2013. The Green/Purple protos came in three versions; MK, RK, and DK which became the Earth, Fire, and Wind models respectively (lowest to highest launch). They're all based around a design philosophy at the time that involved varying mid stiffness bumps, basically the opposite of your mid soft "Blueboard" design, along with higher balance points (slightly counterbalanced) and a variable torque concept in where they actually had slightly higher torque values for feel. These were heavier shafts too with the 7x being a 79g shaft uncut.

If you were to distill all this down into something to look for in another shaft it would be the higher torque and balance point, then the mid stiffness bump. A bit of a strange combo overall though as you rarely see all these elements together (pardon the pun lol). The Elements Earth 6F5 would be the retail equivalent for a 60g version, otherwise I think the DNA of these designs was carried over to some extent with the LIN-Q lineup which might be worth investigating.

@Valtiel Fantastic sir, I figured you’d have some good input. So it’s a low launch, mid-stiff shaft? Didn’t know it was a wild one-off so to speak. How would a a Ventus blue 6x or Tensei Orange 6x/TX compare?

Ventus Blue is pretty opposite being a prototypical mid soft design with fancy tech and an extra stiff tip. The Pro Orange is a very flat, linear design which could kinda be halfway between the Ventus Blue and these UST shafts. The Elements line was a pretty unconventional bend profile with very few comps. The LAGP Trono uses a similar type of design, and a couple older Fujikura Pro Tour Specs are *kinda* similar, but only vaguely. Whether bend profile even matters were is another question as it could be balance point or the feel from the higher torque that made you like it more. The Ventus Blue 7x would actually be a great test for this because it has a similar balance point and torque but is a completely opposite bend profile. If you loved the Attas and hated the Ventus then there could be something to the bend profile angle. You also mentioned wanting to try something shorter, so it could simply be a shorter, heavier shaft works better regardless of all the technical stuff. More testing required!

… hmmm. All I got from this is that I need to find a Ventus blue 6x because, errrr, science 😉

Interesting thought... I did get along quite well with the original RIP 70g S in my Superdeep many moons ago, FWIW.

@DON SVO, the RIP shafts are an interesting concept.  Heavy, stiff mid, but high torque.

My buddy has a RIP'd NV in 60R.  It fails my waggle test every time I pick it up, all I can picture are snap hooks.  And yet I continue to hit long power fades with it.  I wound up grabbing a 60S off the 'bay for peanuts just for fun...

@Valtiel sorry to drag you back in here (I could drop you a DM I suppose but this is all good info)

... from how you described my MK proto, how do you feel that profile would cross reference to a HZRDUS Smoke Blue RDX in either 6.5 or TX?

Anyone looking at/for this shaft should be aware that there were two very different versions of the RIP'd NV that were almost complete opposites.

1) original/aftermarket is green with black graphics - this had the classic Aldila green profile - stiff tip/butt

https://www.ebay.com/itm/373278516855?hash=item56e9222677:g:EZkAAOSw3U5iFRqa

2) Callaway OEM version - black with red graphics - this was a wet noodle compared with the aftermarket version - nothing like any of the aldila aftermarket shafts.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/294948821219?hash=item44ac51d8e3:g:nasAAOSwfcRiZyI~

Not sure which your buddy had or you got - but from your description it sounds like it might have been the second one.

@Stuart_G, I agree completely with the above. I have both versions in my garage.  (the OEM version was listed on the 'bay by a local charity, I bought it out of curiosity and as a way to donate to a good organization that benefits youth golf).

My buddy has the original version in 60R. It feels soft to me (waggle test), but doesnt play that way.

Stiffness feel can be a strange thing - doesn't always give us what we think it's going to.   Personally, I never put much weight in the waggle test.   But whatever works.

This has always been a great example to me of why the waggle test isn't worth much.  I dismissed that 60R when I first picked it up.  Didn't know much about the shaft, assumed it was a lighter 60-series shaft that would play like a noodle.

Then I read up on it.  Even the 60R comes in at close to 70g, so its heavier than you would expect.  And I've never lost one left with that shaft.  Could easily game my buddy's driver if I had to.
