Travel to Open Championship 2022

Anyone with experience on traveling to the Open Championship as a spectator (specifically St Andrews)?

 

Is it better to stay in Edinburgh or Glasgow? Plan is for a quick 3 day trip across the pond and take in Saturday action - fly home Sunday.

We are staying in Edinburgh and just taking the train up. Hoping it will be as simple as it sounds. The 6 rounds during the 6 days prior to our tournament visit may make the walk a little more difficult though!

Edinburgh 999 out of a 1000 times is better to stay.

I am noticing the Open train deal at 77 pounds (sorry, 77 was each way for 4 people)  but just the train ticket about 17 pounds each way. How hard is it to get a bus/car to the Old Course from the station?

When on the Scotrail site, put 'GolfLink' as your destination (rather than Leuchars).  I'm showing it at 19.40 GBP each way (using Friday of tournament week as an example).  The benefit of the GolfLink ticket is that it includes your bus ticket from Leuchars to St. Andrews, so you avoid having to wait in a line to buy that on arrival.

Anyone come up with a plan after the email they sent out about Scotrail today?  Looking at Stagecoach bus schedule from Edinburgh but nervous that it will be impossible with the amount of people trying to get on that bus.

Dundee was very good for us.

Used the rail and bus service even after the email and all went smoothly. Train was a little crowded but we went very early and didn't leave at the last minute so it was no problem at all.

Even with the golf club issues, trip was wonderful. Played Carnoustie in 30-40 MPH wind. I won't say it was easy, but it wasn't as brutal as expected probably due to the little rain and spotty rough. Glasgow Gailes was much better than we thought and Western Gailes was amazing. Cool windy day made it play very tough. Next was Dundonald which seemed somewhat Americanized but still fun. Played Turnberry next and the views along the coast alone made it worth the play. Wonderful course! Finished at Prestwick and it was my favorite by far. We did take caddies every round and never had a bad one. Finished par, birdie at Prestwick so that always leaves a good impression. I for sure overthought club and ball selection prior to going as I probably played about the same with rentals as I would have with my own. Drove up to Musselbburgh Links to see an oldie. I was almost shocked at how open all the courses were to visitors/walkers. You can't just walk your dogs at Augusta. Already planning the next trip back!

Turnberry is the best course in the UK that I have played, pretty easy but gorgeous; far too expensive though, couple it with a stay the hotel and ouch!

 

My offer is still there for Royal Aberdeen; my little 6 month old had an amazing day last Monday because of you!

It is a sad reflection on what can be the most sociable of games that you can come over to the UK and Eire and play virtually all our elite courses but the best US courses are locked away behind closed gates.

Definitely more of an elitist attitude over here at some private clubs.

I do wish the golf clubs here have a bit of what American private clubs do; well my club at least.

 

I miss the locker room guy, cleaning shoes, helping etc.

I miss the half way house.

I miss a good range; my club has amazing short game area but terrible long game as its pick your own balls up and 220 yards long and 60 wide. I have to pay extra for a driving range.

I miss the cart girls(no sexist); I am playing in a few hours and carrying and will have to take 3 Litres of water with me as well as some food.

 

Interesting, looking at the tee sheet for today we have 41 visitors playing today, a lot of guests on top of that. yesterday there was 139 visitors.

Appreciate that! Glad you all enjoyed! So fun to see and hear the pros talk through the wind and shots. Turnberry was more forgiving than I expected for sure but the views were amazing! Even the little pitch and putt course was so much fun there. We stayed in Troon at the South Beach Hotel for our time on the west coast and it was very convenient.
