Should the PGA hava podium finish

Lot of talk about how the PGA could improve. Seems all the emphasis is on who wins each week, even though 2nd and 3rd should be a pretty big deal in a field of 125. Why not have a podium where 1st 2nd and 3rd are recognized after the end of week. Settle ties with a quick closest to the hole fun to watch shot. The goal simply being put the spotlight on more players having a great week rather than pretending a 3rd place finish is meaningless. maybe it is for rory, but most of those guys find a 3rd place a great week.

I had this thought with my idea for a 54 hole style event for pro golf

50 players (12 teams of 4 with two sponsor exemptions)

1st Round is 18 holes Shotgun Start

Cut to 30 players & ties

2nd Round is 18 holes Shotgun Start

Cut to 9 players (playoff for the 9th spot if necessary

Score reset except for player in First starts at -2

Final Round is Shootout format

After 3 holes cut to 8 players

After 6 holes cut to 7 players

After 9 holes cut to 6

After 12 cut to 5

After 14 cut to 4

After 16 cut to 3

After 17 cut to 2

It make the finish a little more interesting and you could interview each player who got eliminated after Tee Shots on the next hole

Podiums could be possible

Points system

1 - 25

2 - 20

3 - 15

4 - 10

5 - 8

6 - 6

7 - 5

8 - 4

9 - 3

Made Cut - 1

Seems a little crazy but it would make TV better

But 3rd place IS meaningless.  It's important personally for a guy at risk of losing his tour card, but 99.99% of fans don't care, and any better pro doesn't care.  It's not about the money, it's about winning.  If you're not winning, who cares.

Justin Thomas had a very good tournament in Toronto and finished 3rd.  I commend him for that, as I always enjoy his play.  But I bet he is the last person who would want to stand on a podium after his finish.

So, no, not a good idea.

Congratulations!  Finally a tournament format more complicated than the actual rules of golf.  And they said it couldn't be done.  Could be crazier and better if, somehow, vats of molten lava were discretely incorporated into the show.

From a more practical point of view - obviously, there is always one winner even if it takes a playoff. Are we going to send those that have tied 2nd and 3rd out to playoff against one another? Try and get the guys interested in doing that!!

NObody will be interested in that because NOBODY CARES.  They already had 72 holes to determine who should be 2nd place, if you can't separate from the field, be better.

this isnt' about the participation trophy bs pushed by so many. this topic has been brought up by numerous people covering golf - with the goal or intention to find a way to make the tournament more interesting to the viewer outside of simply making sunday about the final group.

if we want more coverage of golf shots, and less coverage of the leader walking down the fairway on sunday, i don't think its a bad idea to come up with storylines that give the viewers a reason to care about whether or not a guy finishes 3rd or 4th. love or hate F1, fans go crazy when certain guys finish 5th over 9th. its a constant storyline and a big deal, and battles midway in the pack are fun to watch.

if all that matters is who wins then we can all stop complaining that the telecast shows too many tap in putts and non golf.

the tour needs less storylines, not more.

the reaching they do for a relevant story when a lesser-known name is in contention is extremely forced and contrived.

the people on this forum are the ones watching golf…and most of us don’t even watch the champion get his trophy.  there’s no need to make that process even longer with two more guys up there.

I should clarify:  Pros aren't worried about the cash prize difference between 4th and 3rd.  They care about getting career wins and building their legacy.  Top 3s are nice and all, but you'll never see a guy play conservative down the stretch to keep a top-3 in play vs. aggressive if there's still a chance to win.

Agree for the most part, but if a player is in third by 3 strokes and is several behind the leader, few holes remaining, I guarantee their protecting that check, cause that is how the FedEx Cup seeds them where the prize is more money.

But as to the podium idea, no thanks!
