Once again, it's all about intent.

 

You may blow your nose using a handkerchief but you may not use your handkerchief for gauging the wind.

 

You may smoke a cigar but if you smoke it in order to gauge wind you are in breach.

Why anybody throws grass in the air in the first place..? It only works in plain areas (read: no woods anywhere near) and even then it is not an optimal way as wind has a tendency to have varying velocity in different altitudes. Today there are a million different apps to have real time wind speed and direction and that is 100 times more reliable means than throwing grass in the air.

Totally! I've never understood that. I mean, humans already have this secret, cleverly designed wind detector called, y'know ... skin. What possible additional information does anyone get by tossing grass around that they don't already have just from feeling the wind on their face? Has anyone ever said "I had thought the wind was blowing left to right at 5mph or so, but after throwing grass in the air, I now realize I'm hitting straight into a 15mph wind and I'll need an extra club!" 😂

The lawyers in gear could go on for hours on whether a player/caddie had the intent. But I suppose it’s up the gentlemen-ness to come out on the course and own up.

Much better ways to gauge wind but the smoke worked at the time.

It does seem silly to do that. All it tells you is what the wind is doing on the tee. It could be blowing differently at the green. Of course, in Kansas or Florida, "It's not that the wind is blowing... it's what the wind is blowing" Ron White.

Just using skin doesn't work for everyone.  I have a buddy that I have been playing with for 20 years.  He can stand on the tee with a 1 club wind straight into his face and claim it's right to left until I throw up some grass and prove him wrong.
