*Graphite Design Lovers Anonymous* Tour AD UB vs IZ vs XC and NOW vs TP! ...and HD....and VR

Recommended Posts

Welp this new launch monitor will be the death of me and my bank account 😂

I finally got it going okay. Numbers are still a little short but I've tuned them in a bit. This entire thread I've been testing shafts with the 'eye and feel test', not with numbers. Being able to see the exact report outs of spin/launch/carry even if they are off a % - you can still compare them to each other - really shows the differences when you change the shafts or loft on the adapter.

From today's range session:

Rogue ST Max 9* TC Head

SHAFT (HOSEL): CARRY/LAUNCH/SPIN/PEAK HEIGHT

AD DI (-1/D): 214/16.2/2743/95.7

AD DI (S/D): 221/17.2/2670/106.3

AD GP (S/D): 212/16.5/3560/107

My carry is definitely not those numbers - it's closer to 240 average. Those carry numbers are low by about ~10% for whatever reason in how it's calculating based on readings of my CHS/SS and whatever else so something is off. I've been reading online the last flightscope firmware update has been giving weird readings or something. Donno.

...BUT using the same readings/device for everything we can at least say everything is off by an equal amount.

Whats funny is the GP is showing as the highest spin by a wide margin while retaining a similar height as the DI in the same hosel adapter config. I would never have known that was happening.

Turning the loft down -1* with the same DI yielded expected results in slightly less launch and peak height.

Just now, LundieJT said:

Can anyone compare the UB vs the IZ for a fairway wood shaft?  I'm interested in how they compare feel-wise (linear vs. kicky), and also the feel in the handle.  Also looking for differences in trajectory and spin.  Any insights would be appreciated!

UB feels more linear IMO but the IZ is by no means kicks hard.  I'd say it's a tweener in that regards between the UB and DI.  IZ launches higher and spins more UB.  Both make great fairway shafts.

Finally got the XC 6s on the course today for the first time and I love it.

XC 6s in Tsi2

DI and HD in Paradym X

I like them all very much and way better then Kaili Blue, Kaili White, Kaili red, Ventus Red, Ventus Blue, Hzrdus Black CB, Hzrdus Black, Hzrdus Grey, Tensei Blue, Tensei White, Oban Tour Blue, damn I am a shaft ho and need serious help.

Graphite Design just feels so much nicer and the dispersion and launch are very good.

I pulled an AD DI hybrid shaft to do some testing (again) since I got it for super cheap ($40) and I'll be doing some testing on my the new FS Mevo vs the AD HY shaft thats in the bag.

Only issue is that it's tipped quite a bit vs the recommendations from GD - 1.5" vs .5" for a 19-22* hybrid. My AD HY is tipped 1.25" and I have no problem spinning it but the GD rec is only .5". The AD DI hyb tipping rec is the same but I imagine 1.5" will do more on the DI vs the HY but we'll see on the monitor. Only .25" diff in tipping between the HY and DI comparing each of them.

Funny that with driver/wood tipping the GD recs seem to align with what most OEMs do, but the hybrid tipping is about .5" behind. All things considered .25" to .5" in tipping does nothing and is just a rounding error but at this point I'm 1" over the GD rec so we'll see how it feels. Since I play most hybrids/woods -.5" maybe it will cancel out.

Was busy today so hopefully be able to test tomorrow.

interested to see how it works out because I need another hybrid shaft. Definitely getting DI or HY just not easy to demo anywhere

Range session was good.

Coolest part? Ended up hitting balls right next to Ian Frasier the whole time. Total fangirl moment from an equipment ho. Definitely stared at him a few times before we spoke 😂 I was looking at some numbers with another guy next to me who was hitting his 3w and I was like "Uh, you have the worlds best fitter standing right there - lets ask him" 😂 Ended up talking for a few mins but I had to pickup my kids so left early unfortunately.

As for my AD DI Hyb vs AD HY shaft text they seem to be virtually the same numbers wise but with different feels. This is probably where I wish I could see total distance and not just carry. You can definitely feel the DI Hyb a little softer in the mid to butt than the HY.

CARRY (Dont judge me, these numbers are way low on this LM)/LAUNCH/SPIN/HEIGHT

AD DI @ 20.5*: 171/18.1/4645/90.1

AD DI @ 21.5*: 169.4/18/4831/89.5

AD HY @ 20.5*: 170.5/18.8/4821/94.4

So we can see the AD HY most definitely launches higher and spins more loft v loft with the AD DI hybrid but its a matter of about 1 degree and 200RPM. Distance was almost a wash between all 3 setups. It took the AD HY at -1* of loft to match up with the AD DI but still doesnt get the spin down.

GD describes the AD DI Hybrid as Soft, Medium+, Stiff in the butt/mid/tip sections, while the AD HY is Medium, Medium, Medium.

I was hitting low bullets in my 19* UW, and I put an MJ in there and it's been really good in helping me hit the ball higher.

I think it depends on what you want from each club. I play a Ventus Black 6x in my driver. I then play a Ventus Blue TR 7x in my 13.5 3 wood-that’s exclusively a 270ish yard tee club for tighter holes or holes with trouble in certain landing areas that a driver would touch. My 5 wood is my least used club in the bag, but when I need it, I need it for two things. A 245 yard tee club and a club into par 5’s. So looking for something to drop and stop at the moment.

I generally need a softer butt/mid section on a fairway wood in order to properly load the shaft versus a driver, hence why I'm in a HD in the driver, and DI in the 3 wood

The Max does great off the deck for me, both with peak height and stopping power. It's off the tee that the combo can get caught up from time to time. I don't like hitting deep face heads off the deck though, so I'm trying to find something that can help bring the spin down a bit off the tee but keep the stopping power off the deck.

I ditched my Max for that same reason. Couldn’t do squat off the tee with it.

Tsr3 but it’s a deep faced. But that’s what I wanted, kinda like a mini driver. The 5 wood is a tsr as well and it’s not too bad. Not deep and not low per say.

Kinda the opposite end of the spectrum completely and a discontinued shaft as well. The UB is in the 'bottom right' of the GD charts for launch and spin so really anything will have more - not that I agree with that whole heartedly.

@VanTheMan0519 The UB has the stiffest handle of any GD shaft but is still not the lowest launch or spin. If you want higher launch but not too high or not 'red profile' high you can try the HD, DI, or IZ depending on what feels you're after. There is the MJ as stated above as well as the VR - but IMO those are closest to high launch from the GD line as opposed to mid launch.

YMMV.

And for the record I put the AD DI hybrid in the bag over the AD HY. I kept the loft the same so we'll see how it does on the course with launch and spin. I was pretty confident with my AD HY shaft and not so much now with the AD DI so I need more time with it. But we all know the best thing to do is completely change a club that works well for you; thats why we're here.

Same idea but updated with the new materials GD uses (and obvi graphics/paint). The idea is that its essentially the highest launching and spinning GD shaft - so essentially yes.

I'm a big fan of the GD DI driving iron shaft. Just put one in my 3 utility iron. Steal for less than $100 brand new. Don't know why this hasn't caught on. It feels more like a firm iron shaft to me than the "puffy" GD hybrid i had before. Both are great though, just preference.

A lot time the difference in weight between S and X GD shafts is a gram and torque doesn't change. So how can there be a full flex difference with such a small weight increase and no effect on torque?
