Fix My 3 Utility Iron

Clubs in sig, but for those who can't see it, I'll give the preamble.

 

I've always used heavier clubs. Both in raw weight and swing weight. My last set was +1.5" with NS Pro 950 in S, and with the added length they were E0 even if the raw weight wasn't crazy. I'm now playing the SL Wishon EQ1-NX irons with Modus 120, which is a mid-heavy shaft rather than heavyweight, but with the being at 37.5" rather than standard 36.5" they're a little heavier and they play a little heavier too. Driver I have a 70g shaft and love it. When I try to swing lighter drivers it feels like I'm swinging air. 

 

However, I took my 4w out of my bag, and the fact that my previous 3i (40.5", 225 club, loft unknown) is now comparable to the 4h in my SL set (37.5", 200 club, 20*), I've got an ENORMOUS distance gap between driver and 4h. The lack of speed at 37.5" just doesn't give me the distance I need, although I like the club and launch it high and well (on a good strike). 

 

I picked up a 3u from Sub70's pre-owned selection. It's 19.5*, 39.5* which should give a little more speed, and has the Recoil 660 F4 shaft in it. 82g and I just can't feel the club AT ALL. I thought maybe I'd get on well with a lighter shaft with the added length relative to irons, but strike consistency is nonexistent, and launch is low despite the fact that this is supposed to be a "mid-high" launch shaft. 

 

So I'm trying to figure out what to do to reshaft it, without going through a fitting for a specialty club (I was fit for my old overlength set, and was fit for the Wishon). 

 

Thinking of some options:

 

• Just stick with Modus Tour 120 S at 39.5". That should add 12 SW points, but the head is 33g lighter, which should be a 15.5 SW point deduction. Heck, I could even build it to 40" and be right in line swing weight wise with my irons.
• Steelfiber i110s at 39.5" or 40". A few grams lighter on the shaft, and it was my second choice in my iron fitting. 
• Modus 105 S at 39.5". Still in an acceptable weight range IMHO for me, lighter than the Modus 120 or Steelfiber which may help with the longer club.

 

I feel like this club in my bag can make sense, but it's just not the right shaft for me. Wondering what folks think I might be able to do. 

 

In the interim I think I'm going to drop the old 3i into the bag...

Wishon makes a heavier graphite .370 tip iron shaft at 105-110g, that has a similar profile to the Modus 120 'S', with the soft middle and stiff tip.  It's a bit firmer in the butt, so you'd need to look at the profile and decide whether to go with the 'S' or the 'R' flex, along with tip trim amount to get the closest feel match to your irons....

That said, my irons are Modus Tour 120 S. While I was fit by a Wishon approved fitter, I wasn't fit into Wishon shafts.

 

So the closest feel to my irons would theoretically be the Modus Tour 120 S. I'm just wondering if that's the best idea when I'm dealing with an iron that will be 2-2.5" longer than the Wishon clubs and with a head weight that's 33g lighter than the Wishon heads.

Yeah, I didn't suggest it because it is a Wishon shaft, but because it happens to have a bend profile and weight that could match what you've got in your irons.  Most players go with a little lighter graphite shaft for their hybrids.  Ideally something that is somewhat close to your iron shafts for bend profile.

 

For head weight on a club that is two inches longer than your irons, if you used the same shaft,you'd looking at something ~28-32g lighter for a basic swing-weight match.  So the 33g lighter is a fine starting point.  If you went with the lighter shaft and 2.5" longer, it could work for that too

Ahh, got it. 

 

Do you feel like something about that shaft would be closer than sticking with a Modus 120, or moving to a Steelfiber that I know from my iron fitting that I get along with?
