Pull Hooks

I have seen a lot of videos about how to "fix" a hook. Some good, some not so good. 

 

But there seems to be a consensus that it's being caused by swinging too far right. 

 

But that's not my current miss. It's a pull hook. I was recently at a PGA Store hitting some wedges to warm up before demoing 3W's.

 

My path, on avg was 2-4 ° left. I don't think that's anything too crazy, but maybe it is? With the wedges I was about 5 yards left (and I had this going on last round). 3W was even worse. Same amount of swing left but it was going left of left. 

 

Thoughts?

So your 3W was a right->left path of 2-4*? What was your face angle? 

 

Simple law of ball flight is that your ball will only curve left if your face is left of your path. So if you're swinging 2* left and your face is 4* closed, you'll hit a pull hook. If you're swinging 2* left and your face is 2* closed, you'll hit a straight pull. And if you're swinging 2* left and your face is square, you'll hit a fade. 

 

So the only way you hit a pull hook is if you are closing the face to target, AND your face angle is even more left than your path.

Yeah, this makes sense. Later on the range I'm going to double check my set up at address. I know that at times I have a tendency to set the face up a pinch closed. 

 

I should note that I was hitting the new Exotics Your Edge 3W.. for kicks I tried a Srixon and suddenly with that club I was 1 degree right and I was hitting a nice draw.

So you're out to in essentially with a closed face.  Tough swing path and face angle to play with as the end result is a ball that starts out left and continues to drift left.  2* out to in is playable but the face needs to be square to slightly open at impact IMO
