address position

Not sure if this is a good idea asking on the forum but figured I would, some people know their stuff here. Filmed my swing the other day and was thinking possibly my hands are too close to my body at address, what do you guys think? If I push my hands more out at address I feel my weight go more towards my toes which I don't think is a good thing. Just trying to find the right solution if it's even needed.

I think its how you're pushing your hands out that causes your weight shifting over your toes. You're probably bending over instead of reaching out.

 

You cant really get too close with your hands, though where they hang naturally when you take your stance is a good guide. Furyk almost looks like he's grabbing himself sometimes.

 

Speeding your arms up a bit might help keep you from getting stuck the way you are in the video.

Key Points I always look at in posture - 

1) Shoulders just past the toes.  Allows the arms to hang straight down and be a little past your feet when looking down. 

2) Hips over ankles - which you are doing well now. 

3) Enough tilt to feel pressure in the balls of the feet.  Feeling a little more in the balls of your feet right now would be a good feeling in my opinion.  Think 55-60 on balls to start with opposed to heels.  More bend at address will get you more in the balls and with your shoulders more like Morikawa below.  

 

 

You can see the difference with Morikawa.  

 

 

 

Don't want to go too far.  But wanted to point out the excessive lower body movement for your takeaway.  

 

 

You can see the knee action, how open hips are and where the club is based off lower body movement this early, compared to Morikawa below.  

 

 

 

If you get a good posture setup where you can feel the ground in your feet, that allows you to rotate the upper body and keep the lower body grounded to increase pressure and would keep the club more out in front of you.

yea, Furyk is extremely close.

 

I think my goal would be to get close to Rory here, I blocked out my head so my screenshots don't stick around. He is definitely bent over more so his hands can be a little farther out. Upper back a little more bent over and a little more angle to his thigh vs me. I think the minor tweak could help help a lot.

don't worry, Clark Kent.  your identity is safe with us.

 

you're far more hunched and slouched than rory is.  notice how much flatter his thoracic spine is than yours.

 

if you want that position, you're gonna have to move off the ball a little bit, sit back into a bit more of a squat, and pull your shoulder blades back.  

 

of course, if you work a desk job (guessing here) that's going to be an extremely uncomfortable position for you to hold.

So is Rory's upper body too bent over, do you have an example?

It’s a guideline, not a have to.  Body alignments are different, but good setups have a good look and RM’s looks good.

Yea I agree. I think you are right I just need to move back a couple inches from the ball and give it a try.
