PXG Gen5 Iron Fitting

I just got back from a fitting for PXG Gen5 irons, and wanted to relate the experience for others.  I have had Gen 2-3-and 4 PXG irons and made subtle changes to each version and my swing changed with my comfort level in the irons and figuring out what exactly it is that I value and want in my irons.  I am 60 and started playing when I was 10 with some Wilson Staff Tour Blades that had TT Dynamic shafts (before there was Dynamic Gold).

 

I am a BIG TIME tinkerer with my clubs and have a GC Quad Simulator, Hitting cage, putting green, loft/lie machine and far too many cast off clubs - always search for the grail.

 

My las move with the Gen4s found me with the TT Elevate 95 shafts and a slight increase in headweight so that I could feel the head more during the swing.  I f I can not feel things my squirrel brain will disrupt a smooth swing with LumberJack thoughts and it can produce anything but center strike contact.

 

Today I drove from Cincinnati to Columbus to visit a fitter that used to come down here, but no longer does (well worth the drive). Going in, I was targeting the SteelFiber Private Reserve 95g shafts.  This shaft was OK and we changed headweight, and then the fun started. With various shafts and headweights.  I was hitting the dark heads - I prefer a black head since it looks smaller and does not draw any attention to it.

 

• Aerotech SteelFiber Private Reserve 95g - this shaft was a bit lacking in "feel" for me.  Strikes were mostly centers, but I had some errant shots - mainly due to a lack of feeling the clubhead.
• Aerotech SteelFiber 95g Reg flex (everything else was Stiff) - I could not control this combo at all - very poor strikes.
• KBS TGI 80g - this was not a bad combo for me, but the head feel was good but not quite good enough,  Strikes were pretty good with a few errant ones.
• UST Recoil Dart 75g - this was a really good combo, but something was off for me - nothing bothered me, but I had a few none center strikes and I could feel tension in my swing at times.
• Mitsubishi MMT80 - I had NO intention of hitting this one, but I  hit this one several times between the other shafts - it was an immediate mind meld with this one - my swing was very relaxed and everything changed - there was no focus on the club or shaft and I just had a relaxed swing with center strike and my normal slight draw and a good ball height.  Even the less than perfect strikes were still pretty good.

 

It became pretty obvious which shaft was the winner here.  The issue is that had I not had a fitter that experimented I would not have known what the other combos felt like.  You can not say you want something you do not know exists.  I always thought I had a herky jerky swing and it turns out I am a smooth swinger - the swing smooths out the most when I can feel that club - everything relaxes and I just play golf.

 

The PXG Gen5 woods are stellar as well, but I think more than the club, the fit is king.  If the clubs can be adjusted correctly to you, you will be playing as near to your potential as you can.

 

A big shout out to PXG and their fitting organization.

 

Now this kid has to sit outside the candy store waiting for the candy to be delivered via the horrendous FedEx Ground organization.  I have had so many problems with FedEx ground - latest issue was a to be signed for club being delivered within 3 minutes of my house and it took me a week and many phone calls a threats of suing the driver and FedEx Ground station for that club to appear at my house - and that was after PXG had it close to my house within 8 days of me ordering it 🙂

Great recap!   I man in the same swing profile as you or close. I ended up on SF80 and didn’t think I’d like them at all going in. 
 

was your fitter Jim Mc by any chance?

The MMT80 is a great shaft, very smooth feel and great dispersion. I have played it in Gen 3's, then the G4's, then the G5's and finally back to the G4's. For the first time ever I ordered as back up set of irons. The same ones I'm playing now and is by far the best overall iron I have ever played. The Gen 4XP Xtreme Darks.

 

Congrats to the OP for trusting the fitter and finding a great shaft!!!!!!!

Question for you - on your wedges - what shafts do you have?  I have not hit the AeroTech Private Reserves 95  I have on order.  I was bummed it would be a different shaft, but my swing for the Sand and Lob wedges is different because I used them for full shots as well as partial shots.  The SteelFiber is a tad stiffer throughout, and it may work out very well, but I was wondering what you have tried in teh wedges to go with the MMT irons shafts.

 

Also has anyone tried the MMT Scoring Wedge shafts

Well right now I have the Ping Glide Stealths with their wedge flex stiff shafts. Just ordered the PXG Sugar Daddy II's and put the MMT 80 stiff like I have in my irons. They should be here mid to later this week.

Thanks for this recap, very helpful. I currently play the gen1 with Steelfiber 95r. SS around 100, fairly smooth tempo and transition. I am intrigued by the mmt but am mostly wondering how the weight difference might affect the swing. Heading to a fitting to go and find out what works best for me.

Just an FYI, the MMT 80 stiff weighs 86 grams with 3.7 degrees of torque. So not quite as light / whippy as most people think.
