LIV Tour Discussion Thread (*** NO POLITICS ***)

Seems like this is coming in short order:   LIV to change format to 72 holes with primary 12-teams joined by an additional 6 teams who must qualify on a Monday "team shoot out".    There are 12 to 16 teams trying to qualify on Monday for those 6 team spots.

Suddenly, OWGR has to notice.  Put microphones on every golf bag to capture conversations while limiting 80% of the announcer talk.  Dump the on course music.  Dump the shotgun start and send them off the front and back simutaneously.

I’m so glad someone has said to dump the on course music. It’s simply cringe worthy and I won’t watch mostly because of this one point.

LIV is the future. It might not be an exciting future, but goodbye to “the way it’s always been” league…

It is certainly looking that way. All on the thread are still loyal to the pga. What happens when 4 or 5 more move over to liv, will you still watch the pga/korn ferry just out of principle or will you watch the best golfers.

honestly if cantley or morioka leave, I would not be surprised if Rory changes his tune as he did state he would go where the best golfers are. Maybe his departing the pga tour council is a precursor of things to come.

Ok…

Does anyone actually watch LIV yet? Or is all their attention based on who they’re going to buy next?

No one watches LIV and the PGA Tour keeps sinking.

And now I’m about to lose some yards because of their ball rollback?

Instead of growing the game they’re all destroying it.

Please tell me I’m wrong here. I’d like to be wrong.

I watch LIV.  I like the small fields, it makes it easy to follow all player’s performance over the course of a season.

The team stuff is decent; I like the large swings in team scores and final team event of the year.

Mayakoba in February is a stunning course.

Um, okay, yeah, you're wrong.

A couple years ago the PGAT signed a new 9 year deal with the networks, a huge increase over the last contracts, and worth around $700 million a year in broadcast rights:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/erikmatuszewski/2020/03/09/5-things-to-know-about-the-pga-tours-new-media-rights-deal/?sh=4ffca845594d

Seems to be worth it, as PGAT viewership is growing - the 2023 season turned in very solid numbers:

 https://www.sportspromedia.com/news/pga-tour-2023-season-us-tv-viewers-audience-ratings-nbc-cbs-golf-channel/?zephr_sso_ott=9hcMbi

So, not exactly certain what you mean by "the PGA Tour keeps sinking". Your personal opinion of it may be sinking, but that's something entirely different than the actual numbers. The Tour is as healthy as its ever been, its players have the opportunity to make more than they ever have, and ratings are not only steady, they are growing.

Further, I'm not certain who "they" are, or how they are "destroying the game", but if "they" are trying to, they are doing a pretty bad job of it. Golf as an amateur sport is in the midst of a considerable expansion. It started during the pandemic - which was not surprising, as it was a sport almost custom designed for social distancing. What is a bit surprising is that this growth has continued even though the pandemic has ended. Record numbers of people are playing for the first time. In fact, there's numerous WRX threads full of long time golfers complaining about everything from the lack of etiquette amongst new golfers, to the difficulty in getting tee times.

I mean - 2022 was the last year for which we have full stats ... does this sound like a sport in the middle of destruction?:

https://www.ngf.org/golf-industry-research/

All sorts of people have slightly less than favorable feelings about golf right now - due to everything from LIV to the new ball rule - but objectively, both the PGAT and golf as an amateur sport are absolutely thriving right now.

I will agree that pretty much no one watches LIV, unless they accidentally left the TV on the CW network after a rerun of America's Funniest Animals.  🤣

I agree that the sport is doing well. Population is aging, traditional sports have a few strikes against them such as long term injury consequences being more understood. However, you can't say that the PGA tour is better than ever. It's clearly taking on water. It's being forced to reinvent itself and when players of Rahm's caliber abandon it, you have to believe a lot of sponsors are going to be taking it into consideration.

Personally, I have watched LIV golf, being a fan of golf. I have no loyalty to any corporation... I like that I can watch it on my TV on youtube pretty much whenever I want. Like any golf telecast, there is a lot of filler, but I can easily fast forward it or mute it whatever.
