Palm Springs vibe but not in “Palm Springs”

Have made several trips to PS but have never stayed outside of PS. 
 

Golf of course is the priority for me and my cousin. We will be with several non-golfers as well. 

Ideally theres a walkable downtown area like the main drag in PS. Any place in the area to accommodate them? Also, Id like to try the la quinta courses (PGA West) and indian wells since i havent played any of these. Ive played Classic Club, Escena, Desert Willow. I really enjoy the lack of buildings at CC and Desert willow. Anything else to consider? 
 

Tl:dr two questions: where else to stay in the area that is good for non golfers and what other courses might be recommended not completely surrounded by buildings/condos/houses?

El Paseo in Palm Desert - great shops, restaurants, hotels and closer (than Dwtn Palm Springs) to the golf courses you are mentioning.

I've stayed at La Quinta a number of times and always enjoyed it. Not in a city center but the whole property is so big it's fine to walk around/explore. Can't beat the access to the courses you suggest either.

I visit the desert every other month, usually stay in Palm Desert or Rancho Mirage with friends.  None of the wives golf, they excel at shopping reason we stay in those areas.  Easy for them and us guys drive to wherever we play golf.

El Paseo is the right answer to this question as @tw422 said above.

 

La Quinta is second, but doesn't have as developed a "downtown" or town center, although is does have a central area with food / drinks that's fun.  

 

Can't go wrong with either, and each has plenty of great options within a 15 minutes drive.

PGA West both the Stadium and Nicklaus tracks should be near the top of your list. 

 

For other courses look at Fantasy Springs, Eagle Falls out in Indio, it's a fun track & no homes/condo's to worry about hitting.

Rams Hill out in Borrego Springs is an hours drive from La Quinta, it's a challenging track great layout with very few houses to worry about.

im passing the word and worming on convincing the rest! I hadnt considered palm desert when looking at maps online but definitely had considered la quinta. 
 

The houses/condo/buildings just detract from the beauty and i dislike looking/seeing them on course when im on vacation. 
 

and thanks for bringing up rams hill. That was another one i wanted to play.

Rams Hill is a MUST !!! 

 

Certainly worthy of the drive - and if you leave to head back to PS area at night - the sky is spectacular with the stars.  That in itself is worthy of the drive.

 

Note however that the course is only open seasonally -so check their website for dates.  I think they open in the Oct./Nov. time range and close down around May.
