Public courses August 2022 thoughts and recommendations

Hi all,

 

I will be visiting Houston 10-24 September and looking to get a few rounds in, from previous knowledge and some searching I have come up with my "hit list" ranked top to bottom to try and play.

Wilderness Golf Club

Cypresswood - Tradition Course

High Meadow Ranch Golf Club

Meadowbrook Farms Golf Club

Golf Club of Houston

Augusta Pines

Tour 18

Moody Gardens Golf Course

Wildcat - highlands

Eagle Pointe Golf Club

Memorial Park Golf Course

Gus Wortham Park Golf Course

 

In Bold italics courses I have played before so GC Houston lower on list than should be (IMO), but considering cost and already played, I moved down, Tour 18 played a many times and quality last trip (2019) was far below when I used to live in Houston in 2000 or so, but still love to play Amen Corner 🙂 

 

Am I missing some? or from local recent knowledge know that some of the above to be in bad condition / due some maintenance?

 

Also are there any apps for finding groups looking for a 4th or singles looking to pair up as I saw a couple of courses was only available to book a 2-ball.

High meadow is in great shape fwiw

If you never played High Meadow I'd put it at #1 on your hit list.

 

I'd move Moody up above Meadbrook Farms, Augusta Pines, Tour 18  if you dont mind the drive.  

 

I wouldn't bother with memorial being a non resident with limited time unless you really want to play the PGA tour course.  Tee times are a pain to get.

Move Gus up in your list. You should definitely play there.

High Meadow Ranch (My Home Course) is in great shape. Just completed some aeration and still cart path only. Might change after the expected rain next 10 days. 

Just played GCOH yesterday. Pure as always.

Cypresswood - Tradition Course (Man, I'm so torn here. Greens have been absolute trash since Valero TX Pre-Q. Got HOU Pre-Q in November so theyll keep them long and shaggy until then, I'd pass altogether which pains me because I love the layout)

I think Gus should move up 6-7 slots on that list.  Its been awesome for at least two seasons now.  Put it right below HMR and move Meadowbrook to the waste bin.  I was not impressed last spring on a trip around it.

Has Wilderness improved a lot through the Summer? I played it in May and the fairways and greens had a lot of rough spots. I'd rather play Wildcat.

I would play wilderness 1000 times before playing wildcat once

wildcats only advantage over wilderness is location... Wilderness is better in every other way

I in general would agree, but Wilderness was in mediocre shape when I played that it took away from the round. If they've been able to correct that over the last few months then no disagreement there.
