What was in my shaft?

R.Patrick

Recommended Posts

Was fitted at CC (ugh) a couple years ago for a G425 3W w/ Ventus Blue.  Never got along with it (too heavy), sold the head, put the shaft on the wall and forgot about it.

Since then I’ve started doing my own club work, and decided to change out the adapter and give the Ventus another try.
Found 12g of what I assume is epoxy in the tip.

Anyone else see this before?

Looking forward to taking another shot with the Ventus, since I could never understand what all the hype was about after this experience.

Sure is epoxy, most likely with tungsten powder mixed in with it. Common practice for swing-weighting clubs in builds from CC. Really wish you had swing-weighted your driver before you took it apart because that's a good bit of weight added. This usually happens because all of their fitting club swingweight heavier because of the adapters used on them.

I wish I had also, but I didn't have a sw scale at the time.

Thanks for the response.

Not the first time we've seen this. @ChxDigLongBall is right, that is an irresponsible amount of epoxy mixed with tungsten powder they cram down the shaft for weighting purposes because it's cheaper than swapping out the adjustable weight on the head. It's a terribly amateur practice considering the conventional and simpler alternatives.

CC did this with a steelfiber build for me.  I normally do all my own work, but i relented and let them do it.  They felt absolutely terrible so i decided to take them apart and sell them.  When I pulled the shafts, there was 12" of epoxy up the shaft.   I was shocked.  They were the SF110 that are notoriously hard to swingweight correctly, but this was ridiculous.

Please explain. I just received and iron set from them and the swing weight is D3, but the overall club feels really heavy.

The shaft is actually lighter by the specs compared my former shafts (old DGS300S vs New NPM3 120x).

Could this explain why the club feels heavier?

Most likely…both my 3W and 3H (no longer have) both felt way too heavy.

We'd need more detail (previous club swingweight specifically). The main way one "D3" feels heavier than another is you've increased shaft weight (which you haven't) or is a larger, heavier grip was used (which causes a lower swingweight reading without actually making the club lighter) and weight was added to the head/shaft to bring the swingweight back up, thus making the overall club feel heavier. We'd need to know the grip details from both sets of clubs.

Yes 66g grip but still seems like a crazy practice when the head has a removable weight.

Absolutely.  I was trying to figure out why so much weight was added.

BTW, I'm not an advocate of hitting a swing-weight number based on a heavy grip, unless a full fitting has proven that the extra head weight is beneficial.

A heavy swinging club is not transformed into a lighter swinging club, by installing a heavier grip on it.  The more accurate way to measure how much force it takes to swing a club, is done with an MOI machine, which never shows a lower number with a heavier grip.

Absolute joke that CC does this over and over based on fitting the player with the heavy universal adapter system and then “insisting” that nobody builds clubs better than them. Complete BS.But a fool and his money will typically believe their marketing pitch.

Agreed. I mean...i'd be open to hearing a "better" explanation from them, but it sure does feel like a super shoddy build practice meant to reproduce a spec that is based on an equally shoddy fitting process (heavy universal adaptor system with no compensation) which in the worst cases approached a new favorite term I learned; fractal incompetence😆.

A little onus does fall on the customer to say "this is too heavy" and get them to do something to lighten the whole thing, but it's still a pretty indefensible build standard that reeks of corner cutting.

If the grip weights are the same and the shaft weight is similar (lighter in your case actually) then we'd have to know more specs about your old clubs to say for sure (swingweight minimum). Regardless of what that tells us though, if you struggle with it feeling too heavy and that results in worse swings then you'll need to have weight removed regardless.

Does the club feel heavier than what you were fitted for? Ideally they can make adjustments for you on a new build (remove tip weights etc), but you'll likely have to answer why the club feels this way to you now if they in fact accurately built what you were fitted for in the studio that yielded the best results.

OK.  Thank you.  I will talk to them and tell them what I am feeling and see if they know why.
