Possible Recall On PXG installed KBS Tour Lite

Saw 2 recent posts within an hour today on PXG forum page regarding shaft breaking off.  Both posts were KBS Tour Lite and look like they were prepped and installed only 1/4” into hosel

 

Edit; I made this post to warn fellow wrx members due to how dangerous this could be.  Not a post directed to bash PXG.

The photos show a shaft that broke.  If the shaft was only inserted 1/4" into the hosel, the shaft would have pulled out clean, not broke.

Any idea how this could happen the same way to 2 different people? Issue with KBS tour lite or is it PXG install issue?

I don't know.  KBS shafts are known to have weak tip sections, but no idea if this is related.

Ive heard of kbs tips bending but I thought it was mostly on ctapers

PXG will just cover whatever breaks under warranty and call it a day

 

Shafts break all the time and heads go flying. Fujikura even has Ventus breakage issues according to a long thread in the tech section.

I wish we could see the inside of the hosel.  Would clear up the mystery quickly.  

I can't see how it could break like that if only inserted 1/4" ... as already mentioned, it would bend and pull out on the first ground contact.

But, that doesn't rule out some sort of mistake during the build.

Take a look at r/golf on Reddit, and you'll see broken shafts like this every day, in all different brands and types of clubs. Likely due to hosel or heel strikes.

It’s a KBS tour lite issue. I have a buddy who snapped his TM p790 the same way in both his 4 & 5 iron in the last week. They were brand new in the last month.  Flushed strikes went boom.

This could be a KBS issue AND a PXG issue.  If that shaft is .355, I have seen a few PXG without shims and only the ferrule in place which could put more stress on the tip.  But I don't typically trust KBS shaft tips either having been a victim of the same thing in a Mizuno head.

So maybe the topic should read Recalls on KBS Tour lite's as it's not just PXG.

Makes sense.  I just post up a question because I only seen them on a PXG forum close together.  I know very little about club builds and component issues.  Will spend a bit more time in this forum to learn a bit…even if I never build myself.

Looks like the shaft broke inside the hosel. The remains of the shaft should be found in the hosel of the iron. If you haven’t already, contact PXG and they will replace the shafts for you. Ask for a similar weight and profile. I’ve seen it happen before with lots of different shaft and club manufacturers.

Sorry to revive but I love the flashy title of this thread... what did you end up doing with the KBS Tour Lite shafts? 

I have Gen 5 PXG 0311s, similar to yours.  Was fitted into a “KBS Tour Lite” shaft.  No clue why.  In only a handful of rounds I’ve broken two shafts, down near the hosel. 7 and PW.  PXG replaced my first one very quickly and has offered to do the same again, but it has me wondering if these shafts are just brittle.   My local PXG fitter recently quit and our area isn’t filled so I’ll likely need a phone fitting with them to figure out a new shaft.

Any obvious replacements to the KBS Tour Lite you would recommend?  Trackman has my swing around 120mph +/- 5.  Not the best golfer ever, but when I make my usual contact, it goes.  170-180ish with an 8 iron, +/- 10 yards per club from there.

I have make a few posts regarding this, PXG ended up reshafted all my irons only 7 to PW for free (no upcharge shaft).  My 7 iron, 9 iron, PW all broke off, 8 iron you can see it bend at the hosel.

 

They are multiple posts regarding the KBS tour lite shaft in this forum and else where.  To me, they are not safe to play.

Second,  your glove is too big... 😂

 

Third, with a 170 yard 8 iron, Tour Lite is a very light shaft to be fitted into. My 7 iron is 150-155, and I was fitted into that shaft in stiff. But I'm an old man.

 

Fourth, I think I'm going to reshaft my irons! Way too many KBS shafts bend and or break. I had a set of KBS 90 shafts, which the Tour Lite replaced, and they all bent at the tip.

 

If you like a light shaft, I would say Nippon would be a place to start. True Temper Dynamic Gold 105 also.

Agreed.  I thought it was a fluke the first time and didn't look into it much.   Now everywhere I look there are broken KBS Tour Lites.  Are you happy with the Steelfiber Private Reserve 95R I see in your signature?  I don't that as a current option from the PXG site.

Lol... the glove fit great but has since broken in a bit.  I am also not sure why the fitter opted for the KBS Tour Lights with my swing speed and power.  For what its worth they are the Tour Lite "stiff".  Maybe he just overlooked it?  I honestly don't have a preference on shafts at this point... just something that doesn't break.  My last set of clubs were 1999 Taylor Made Burners with stock shafts that lasted 20 years of on an off hacking.  With these I have two broken and a third bent.  PXG offers the True Temper Dynamic Gold 120, which might be a decent option for me.

Great. I literally was just fit for Gen5 4-PW with KBS tour lite shafts yesterday.

My 9 iron broke off on a par 3 over the water, fortunately it stopped short of the water. The ball actually landed 20 ft from the hole and I make birdie, then my 7 iron broke off on a punch shot, ball hit the green and the club flew off to the right 40 yards and hit a tree 50ft up.  Then my PW broke off, roll off the ground and hit my buddy at approx. 45 degree 50 ft away from me on the hip.  They are dangerous.

 

On the private reserve, it seems to be a little bit more active and feel than regular steelfiber plus it looks pretty awesome with my Gen 4 black finish 0311ST.😁

Go for a refit, PXG usually have great customer services.  Tell them what you find out and they will work it out with you.

Its not like these shafts are catastrophic failures, they likely just aren't right for everyone's swing.

I just had my Gen 5 311 8 iron break off today at the range.  All my irons have the KBS tour lite stiff shafts in them.  I have only played about 10 rounds with these and was definitely shocked to see the head go flying.  I’m waiting on a warranty claim from PXG, but after reading this I’m worried about more breaking.

They are putting in a new shaft but no longer have the KBS shafts. Will be a True Temper 95. I asked what about the rest of my clubs, but they wouldn’t answer.
