How could I EVER have a drive where I can a stroke? What drive was that?

A few of them actually have a positive SG... which is by definition a shot where your expected number of strokes to hole out after your drive, is better than the expected of shots before your drive -1... (not gaining a complete shot on Tour guys haha)

#3 / #4 / #9 / #12 / #3 again... usually hitting 230ish and finding the fairway is on par with a neutral/positive SG OTT... that distance and ending in the rough, fairway bunker or recovery and that a dead negative SG

Thanks so much everyone. Really appreciate this. I want to start tracking my tournament rounds only. Too many non-tournament rounds I show up to the course 5 minutes before tee time. Don't hit a single ball or putt and I'm on my phone the entire round, and I will play injured. With tournaments I get ready to play and try to stay focused all 18 holes. I also won't play if I'm injured, I will just WD.

So I want to see what my strokes gained look like over a whole year as a certified short-hitting senior who tracks every competitive round I play.

I would look into the golfmetrics app if you are serious about tracking SG

So on a 360 yard hole, if I hit it 240 in the fairway, leaving 120, and a tour pro hits it 340 in the fairway leaving 20 yards from the fairway, what is the difference there?

Obee -> 360t to 120f : +0.07 shots on the average Tour guy

Rory -> 360t to 20f : +0.52 shots on the average Tour guy

In that scenario, you just lost 0.45 shots to Rory... but gained 0.07 on the field

... average Tour guy, on a 360yds hole would have to leave himself:

  • 142 yds in the fairway or (i.e. 218 yds tee shot)
  • 65 yds in the rough or (i.e. 295 yds tee shot)
  • 46 yds in the bunker (i.e. 314 yds tee shot)
  • (no chance for recovery)

to have a neutral tee shot SG wise

--

FYI - 360 yds is an interesting distance because of the 'flat' expected shots to hole out from... meaning not much difference for Tour guys from 360 to 430... as where the 'slope' gets a lot steeper from 430 up to 510 - and thus the bombers advantage from those longer Par4 distances

Plotting the shots to hole out by distance is quite an interesting one to look at. It's much steeper from 300 to 200 than it is from 200 to 100, so an extra 10 yards on a par 5 is worth more than an extra 10 yards on a mid-length par 4, so, depending on your game, you can either take on a little more risk to hit driver or try hit it harder (if it won't hurt your accuracy *too* much). Figuring out here what is "too much" of course will depend on the hole, the trouble, your game and the situation.

You can even do a bit of reverse engeneering and figure out your own 'Broadie tables' based on your shots; distance and lie... and see the tradeoff cost for your game of finding the fairway versus going for it and rough coming into play... also on expected strokes to hole out for around the green and putting distances... pretty informative

Sounds like the 7 and 9 woods were definitely working well 🙄

I do not own a 7-wood nor do I own a 9-wood. I do, however, own a 7-hybrid, 6-hybrid, 5-hybrid, 4-hybrid and 2-hybrid.

Just watched the Mark Broadie interview regarding "Strokes Gained". He was basically advocating Bomb and Gouge by indicating that it's better to be long and crooked. I continue to say, "good Luck with that".......If that's the case I would expect every player to go for a par 5 in two instead of laying up regardless of the rough. More tournaments than not the announcer constantly reiterate the fact that the players must hit the fairways to score well......maybe they should study the analytics....

Hmm.....aparently Bomb and Gouge is worth .25  strokes a round.

According to Broadie.
