Played the West again yesterday and i think it is playing at least 5 shots harder than summertime.  Will rough gone around the greens and everything mowed so tight it makes all those chip shots twice as hard.  I also hit the basically middle of the green on 2 holes and found my ball about 30 yards away after catching the slope.   We also had some very devilish pin placements yesterday that did not give me great confidence in my putting!

The part about hitting the middle of the green and finding my ball 30 yards away down a slope, short sided, etc, etc. is one of the things I liked least about playing out there. I suppose that's part of playing a PGA tour level course is getting breaks like that.

But at least you paid a massive green fee for the privilege....

There’s a lot I like about the West course, but the 9th hole is the worst hole on the property. Not really long enough to be a par 5, so they artificially stretch it out with a giant bunker. Nearly everytime I’ve seen somebody in the bunker, it takes them two to get out. Almost nobody has the 60-yard, 40-foot uphill bunker shot in their bag. So inevitably the first shot ends up about 2/3rd up the bunker, with just a massive amount of sand and often times in a footprint from

the last guy who did the same thing.

Oh and if you are going for the green in two, landing just on the green likely means your ball ends up through the green on the other side of the cart path, unless you have the trajectory of Jason Day.

Rather play PGA Frisco or TPC San Antonio?

That is a tough one as they are different courses in my opinion.  I think both of the PGA courses resemble more of the Canyon course over the Oaks course.  That being said i think they are all fun to play and i like the option of not needing a caddie or fore caddie to play the SA courses.

All right I went and checked this place out. The golf courses themselves are excellent. The resort is very nice, but I think as a whole the place suffers a bit from an identity crisis. Does it want to be a destination golf resort? Or a family resort? It is hard to do both well. Right now it definitely seems to be skewing family.

Observations:

-The West Course was significantly more booked up than the East Course. I think this is due to the walking/caddie policy. The casual resort golfer looking for one round on family vacation may prefer the convenience of the carts.

-Still VERY firm on the greens. I am not used to having to account for bounce/roll out even with mid to short irons.

-Tee boxes - The II tees shoud NOT be the default "mens" tee, especially on the East course (7000 yards and a 75.5 rating). The starters were not very good at pushing people toward the correct boxes for their skill level.

-The caddies were not great. They could give okay lines off the tee but struggled with reads to the point of not even being correct on L->R vs R -> L.

-The putting green is pretty much unusable by 2pm onwards. It is completely free/open to the community and there were so many kids out there. Which is great as a family/community resource but limits its appeal to the dedicated golfer. Maybe they should have dedicated hours for open play vs resort guests?

-Didn't have time for the par 3; it looked visually appealing but similarly overrun

-The ranch houses are still prohibitively priced, but also their location is not great. Super close to the golf courses but also so close to the shopping district that there is a ton of noise in the evenings. Not a great place to relax and hang with your buddies.

-The Top Golf lounge is a freaking zoo. It is 100% getting booked up by locals, and I wouldn't bother if I were there with a big group of golfers.

-Needs at least one more good restaurant. The Apron at the hotel is not good for dinner, very mediocre food. Trick Rider is nice but quite pricey. Top Golf lounge as mentioned is a zoo, and then you have the Ice House which is casual/BBQ.

Pretty low on the list of places to re-visit for me, but glad I got to play it. Really liked the East course. Lipped out a hole in one opportunity on the fourth hole.

It is interesting you said about them not moving you up tee's as every time i am there they say play the III tees for both courses.  I think at least for me the II tees on the West is perfect and the III on the East.

What putting green are you talking about?  They have a dedicated course putting green between the East and West tee boxes.  Then they have the huge free green with 3 courses on it.  That one is meant for as you described for family's and the other one they are pretty strict of only allowing people playing to use.

I think they are trying hard to make it both a family and golf destination.   As they also do movies, football games, bands, and such under the big TV on the weekends.   It is never going to be Bandon or Pinehurst and I think they are ok with that.  Just wish it was a little more affordable or at least give the locals a better discount to be able to take advantage of it.

I meant the big one. Would have been fun to be able to go out there with a drink and putt around after our round. There were probably close to 100 people out there though. I guess they want the traffic but either charge a nominal fee for it or restrict the hours.

You must have caught it on a really busy day as i have never seen that many people on it.  What frustrates me about it is when people don't start on hole 1 and just play random holes all of the the putting green.
