Lido Update?

I’ve been lucky enough to play a round out at the Lido. It’s was one of the coolest experiences in my golf life. The course is a true test and plays tremendously differently than that of sand valley and mammoth.

Things that stood out to me:

1. You won’t find a level lie out there. The fairways have constant rolling undulations and the ball is simply going to be above or below your feet.

2. You will end up in a fairway bunker you didn’t know was there. Some are very penal, some aren’t. But you are going to be in there so be ready.

3. The bunkers around the greens are often deep/steep faced and a place you’d rather not be. The green complexes funnel off and into the bunkers more than funneling towards pin locations.

4. There’s nothing to stop the wind. It was windy when I played and boy did it play a role. There’s nothing out there to protect you from the wind so if it blows be ready.

5. It’s quiet. Even though you can see other holes it was so quiet out there. A very different experience than I’ve had at other places.

As for conditions, greens rolled great but were not exceptionally fast. Fairways and tees were cut a little longer but I’m fairly convinced that will change. Bunkers were in great shape and I sampled quite a few.

Favorite hole: Hard to pick a winner out of just a continuous round of gem after gem holes. I’ll choose two.

A par five on the front (#4 I believe) has a split fairway with risky route to the right that gives a chance to go in two. Beautiful views with the pond and a fun hole to play.

A par 3 on the back (#16 IIRC). Redan style with a big bunker left and danger right. Just a hole that from the tee begs for a beautiful shot that’s going to feed right to a pin. (That’s not what I did but you sure can picture it).

All in all, I’d have to say it’s the best course I’ve ever played. Hopefully I’ll get back to it one day.

Played Thursday and agree with all of this, its amazing, some incredible holes.  Up there with some of the hardest shots I have ever had to play, huge undulations, blind shots, table top greens, its a true test, you need all the shots to have a chance to score out there.

It definitely needs 2-3 seasons to "grow in" a bit, but it still looks mint now.  I would agree that the greens rolled great, but they are going to get much, much faster with time, if they bake them out some greens could be downright impossible to hold.

The redan on 16 was my favorite hole on the course by far.  One thing thats not bad but people do need to be aware of is some of the holes are extremely close together, 15 through 17 especially, like tee boxes right next to greens within 10 yards.  My opinion is they need to space times out a bit more or it could legit get dangerous out there,  we almost got smoked twice on the tee box because the prior green is literally right next to it.

Yeah did it live up to the hype?

Thoughts on the playing experience?

🙃

I really enjoyed it.  It's like no golf course you've likely ever seen or played.  The punch bowl especially, pictures don't do justice to the height that's required to get into the punch bowl from the fairway.  I personally wish we had yardage books so you could see more about each hole prior to playing, but there are so many bunkers on many of the holes that it's almost impossible to aim around them.  Our caddies were good but they were limited in how much information they had to shepherd us around.

Why would a push card rule be mentioned or exist since caddies are required?

We assumed (incorrectly) that "caddies required" meant that, at a minimum, one forecaddie per group was required and that we could still use our push carts.  We used our push carts and a single forecaddie when we first played Mammoth Dunes and Sand Valley in 2020 for our first visit.  So just an incorrect assumption and the rules shared ahead weren't clear to us.

I would prefer to push with two forecaddies per group as that is what I'm accustomed to (pushing not the caddy).  When I played SV and MD I did not take a caddie and utilized my groups caddies as a forecaddie and tipped accordingly.  After playing SV once that was all I needed to feel comfortable with the course and I did not need a caddy.  The next time I played it I was fine and was able to help my buddy with right lines.off the tee.  I suspect there will continue to be some confusion for day guests per the difference in policy, but I do appreciate you taking the time to fill in the board with regards to your experience!

Yep, we only took a single forecaddie for our first rounds at SV and MD.  We haven't taken caddies back at the resort since these first rounds, even though last year they tried to force a "free" junior forecaddie on us which we politely but forcefully declined.

1 more ?...if you/anyone in your group used a rangefinder, did you find it helpful in gauging distance/yardages off the tee/layups, etc.  I.e. was it easy to shoot targets in that respect?

Yes we all had rangefinders and so did our caddies. You can get a feel for some things with the rangefinders but many tee shots are blind to the bunkers on fairways so you’ll be limited in what information you have until there are yardage books.

Did the course play firm and fast or links-like? I’d assume it plays similar to sand valley courses but curious if you noticed any more or less run out on drives/approach shots?

The turf played the same as the SV courses.  Green ran a bit slower because of how new they are.  But expect the playing surfaces to be similar/same as SV.

Finally back from "Tour de Wisconsin".

Since others chimed in enough, I'll just share my pictures and videos.

The pro shop.

A small collection of merchandise, some food and beverage.

They say they are going to build a much bigger clubhouse.

First tee.

Walking through the sand from the tee to the fairway was cute for the first few holes then got real pain in the a**.

They need to lay down some wood panels underneath.

We were the last group on the course.

Watching the sunset over the dunes is always a special treat.

Great pictures and video, looks like about the time I'll be playing it when I go. The lighting is great that time of day.

How'd it compare to Sand Valley and/or Mammoth Dunes? Better, worse, different?

I loved Sand Valley the most.

The Lido has a great layout and history behind it, but it'll take some years to mature as a golf course.

The greens were surprisingly good, considering how young the course is.

Green speed was Sand Valley>Mammoth Dunes>The Lido.

Fairway is too cushiony for the links course, but that'll only come after some years.
Overall, I'm glad I got to experience it and would love to return 5-10 years later.

  • 1 month later...

Just played 3 weeks ago. Course was like nothing ive ever played. No rough, you just hit it into sandy areas. if you dont hit in bunkers you can have a good day.

Greens are absolutely massive one even had a sprinkler in the middle lol

Greens are fast and hard but are still receptive to balls. If you miss the green and arent in a bunker, you can pretty much putt from anywhere if you want. Most greens seem elevated when you are playing. Some are more subtle than others.

It could feel like no wind at sand or mammoth but as soon as you get to Lido its 15-25mph

Worst part of the whole trip is I collect metal ball markers from the whole trip and the clubhouse was out of them. Since they dont have anywhere to get them im out of luck.
