Soft Stepping and loose butts

Probably a pretty basic question, but I have had a problem with grips getting loose on the butt end with 2 diffent sets of grips, 2 solvents and 2 different brands of tape.  In decades of regripping I have never had this issue.  I have given up on the idea it is the tape, grip or solvent, because it is fine on my Driver.  The only other thing I can think of, is that my irons are softstepped 1X.   Shafts are Steelfiber i95S, also played straight in for several years.  Could this decrease Butt Diameter enough to make a difference?  If so, how much extra tape needed to make up for it?  I normally use 2 wraps.  Do I need to look elsewhere for the issue.  BTW, grips are Crossline full cord, which I have played for years.  Pulling grip and then regripping may come into play since they are firmer than many grips.  Any guidance appreciated.

When we soft step a shaft, we only reduce butt section by 0.5", and thats NOT the issue here.
Think of the classic DG series....the X starts with the longest butt section, S flex is 2 inch shorter, and R even shorter than that. The most used Wedge shaft in the history of Golf, DG S400. has LESS than 5.0" inch long butt section left when we use that shaft for wedge, so the grip will cover almost 3 full steps. If we wants to have a strait butt section of 10.0", we need 1 layer of 0.015 on the first step (from the butt), 2 layers on step 2, and 3 layers on step 3.

My guess is that you aren't getting the grips on all the way.
I've been installing my own grips for 35, years, and in the last few years, I've been having this happen quite often, if I'm not paying very good attention. I've also found it much harder to slide grips on then it used to be. Not sure if it's softer grips, or tape, or solvent, but it's an issue I've seen over and over.

I know blow all my grips on, and just check carefully to make sure they are on all the way, and no issues.

I've found that some of the solvents don't work that well. I honestly just use lighter fluid because it always works. My guess would be the solvent.

 

I also wipe down the shaft with rubbing alcohol before putting grip tape on. I've also found some grip tapes just aren't sticky enough. Tape comes off when the solvent goes on.

I wonder if the tape isn't adhering to the shaft butt. Perhaps due to some kind of substance on the shaft not allowing it to stick? I would tend to rule out soft stepping as being the culprit.

New grips or pulls.  If they are pulls, you really have to suspect tape residue in the grip.  A thorough cleaning with a wire brush and thinner is needed.  New grips, you need to make sure the diameter of the shaft with the tape on is .600".  If it is less, you could run into a problem with the butt end of a cord grip not adhering properly.

I think you are right.  I regripped the six iron with four wraps and I still have the issue.  It is fully seated and the butt diameter is fine.

The grips on the Driver and 4 wood were not pulled, and I have no issue with them.
