Two things Hogan said... think about it eh!

Recommended Posts

ben-hogan-hitting-ball.jpg

First thing he said

“…the left hand will not check or interrupt the speed with which your clubhead is traveling. There’s no danger either that the right hand will overpower the left and twist the club over. It can’t. As far as applying power goes, I wish I had three right hands!

Second thing he said

“…Reverse every natural instinct and do the opposite of what you are inclined to do, and you will probably come very close to having a perfect golf swing”

There you go folks... happy hunting and have a blessed day.

I'm sure I'll get "flamed" for what I'm fixing to say but so be it, who cares right.

Sure he rebuilt his swing and came back from an horrific car wreck which shows his determination and drive.

But I just don't see why so many people are so fixated or enamored with Hogan's swing thoughts or swing. It's not the holy grail.

Like so many others he's a golfer who figured out what works for him, like so many other Pro's.

I think it's not only his unique swing but the results that came with that swing--his record. what's funny for me is that many claim they know the "secret" to his swing but never have successfully duplicated it yet. And the reason is, as you said in your reply, he created a swing that worked for him.

Yes, Ben Hogan figured out what worked for himself.  It may have helped a few others in the form of his books, Power Golf and Five Lessons, the Modern Fundamentals of Golf, which was a long time best seller among golf books.

He shares the skill development abilities with other pros like Harry Vardon, Sam. Snead, Byron Nelson, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and even an amateur, Bobby Jones.

Near the end of his playing day he started a golf company like a lot of other pros and his company was better than average.

He did win a few majors.  In one stretch he won 9 majors out of 16 he played in in that stretch.  He did a better than average job of figuring out his swing since there were not a lot of other pros that figured out how to solve their problems as well as he did.

moe norman said the opposite, he was left-hand dominant and was pulling very hard with his left hand/side. or maybe i am misunderstanding your riddles 😉

the second thing i can definitely see, an optimal golf swing is not a natural motion AT ALL. getting the right arm external and bent at impact goes against everything it wants to do.

How about "the secret is in the dirt?"   Sometimes I think Hogan got a kick out of saying things just to mess with people's minds.

I am not flaming you @SEP1006

Many people trust experience over inexperienced online idealists, theorists pushing this or that is wrong, and this is better... I am one.   It's NOT about wrong or right, it's just that the latter segment typically has nothing personally to support theories.  Hogan, on the other hand, proved his thoughts on the course.

Thus, saying LOL your judgment is tainted.  Good judgment is critical in life, means choosing the right people to listen to will get a person further than choosing unknown people because he talks to you.

Then there is this fact: I am bias because I took up golf late in life, self-taught using 3 books, #1 most used book is Hogan's 5... #2 Faldo's A swing for life, and #3 Seve's Natural Golf; all three are on my desk.  I reached an index of 2 in 6yrs, thus a product of Hogan's teachings, so his teachings work.

I too took up golf later in life, I was 36 the first time I picked up a club. I didn't use any books or videos ( probably should have ) I just kind of winged it. Played for fun and didn't really care what I shot. Was always a good athlete in other sports and could generally shoot between 85 - 90 every time I played without even thinking about it.

Anyway back on topic. i certainly didn't mean to discredit Hogan or his teachings. Its just some people think he is the God of golf. He certainly deserves all the accolades and credit for what he went through and how he came out of it. But in the end his teachings are just another way of swinging a club.

I didn't take your post as disparaging the man.  This is an exchange of ideas.

In every walk of life, there are certain people that rise above the rest, as a result of their judgement and example; Hogan is one.  In golf, there are plenty of people that act like teachers, but only some measure up to someone like Hogan, Faldo or Seve, and Seve wasn't much of a teacher, more of an example to follow; there is that difference.

Like you, I have been an athlete since HS, eight years of football and many other competitive sports and activities since.  My first round of golf at 40yrs old, using new never hit clubs off the LGS rack, I carded 94 from 6400yd tee's, with three friends who played in college.  Those 3 guys expected me to shoot over 100.  Judgement, good or bad, is reflected in the outcome.   Hogan's outcome far exceeds many others that make claims.

The point you're making is true, but an over simplification.  Yes, Hogan's teaching is just another way, like a Porsche GT3 is like a Volkswagen, just another way to get to the store...NOT. 🙂  Hogan and Faldo's philosophies regarding golf have led a great many students to become successful at the game, compared to the masses.   Again, good results and life are about good judgement.  You have a good day.
