SwingW.com Swingweight Scale

Has anyone heard of SwingW.com that makes budget swing weight scales? I’m looking to add one to my shop in the basement. I’m a recreational builder doing work for myself and friends. I found this digital scale and am wondering how accurate this scale is.

It looks very modern. I've never met anyone that owns one. The problem with accuracy is, that you need to own a club you know 100% is a particular swingweight. Or you can bring in to a reputable shop and check.

I always found it frustrating trying to see who's scale is accurate. I've had a scale read d3, but a buddy says it's d4 on the nose.

For that price you can get a nice machine from a reputable place selling golf tools.

I got the much cheaper version.  I just use it to make sure my irons

are the same Swingweight I have no reference point if it is accurate.

I just got the simpler cheaper XL version. I tested it against a simple measurement and online resource. Very close for all my clubs. I have had a shop swingweight my 6 iron and the SwingW was 0.2 heavier.

At least on the XL version making sure everything is level and secured makes a difference. I agree with others above, it is less about how accurate it is vs another scale and more about how consistent it is as a reference point. I have setup and taken down the XL multiple times. Each time as long as my setup is consistent it reads the same number of grams for the same club resulting in the same Swingweight reading.

Driver: Sim OG 8* (-2g), Diamana ZF 40x

3wood: m3 3HL @15*, Ventus Blue 6s

5wood: Sim Ti @18*, Diamana S+ 75s

4i-GW: Ke4 Max (-8g), Project x Catalyst 60 6.0 +1"

SW: CBX2 52*, Rotex Precision 90g wedge flex

LW: Tour Grind MG 60*

P: 2013 Scotty Cameron Newport Black, Pistolero

Grips: Lamkin Crossline 58r Standard

Ball: TP5X 2024

I mostly do agree with everyone above that it is important to use it correctly, however a reference SW doesn't really matter.

I would comment that if you sre ordering clubs new, and you want a particular SW, it never hurts to know your specs.

I have an old (+40 years) Kenneth Smith SW scale that has paid for itself many times over.  It was probably the most expensive model at the time but well worth the cost. To me the value of a swingweight scale isn't the absolute accuracy (+- 1/10th of a SW point) but the ability to get a set of irons all balanced within a fairly tight tolerance.  For instance, my irons are spec'd at D3 and if a given iron is reading D2.4 or D3.6 that's livable if all the other irons fall in line.

SW scale came in the mail today. So far so good!

Nothing to set up, just removing some zipties and a couple screws. It's very light and doesn't take up a lot of space.

Readings all make sense from what I can remember. Screen is very nice and bright. The S Pen from my Samsung S7 tablet works great on the touch screen.

You can measure two things at once if you want/need to. Grip ends insert easily into the pin and stay in place.

Suggestions... A ridge/valley on one the scale platforms would be nice to keep the shaft/grip from rolling around. On the QR screen, no 0 key or LW key?

I'm going to take the same clubs, (60 degree, 8 iron, 7 wood, and driver) to work and measure them on the Golf Mechanix digital scale and the Mitchell swing weight scale. Note that Golf Mechanix and Mitchell are about 1 sw point different and I'll bring home a 500 gram weight to test the scales.

Some pics...

Question, are you required to select what club you're measuring before doing so? The no LW key thing is concerning

No. If you want to send the info with the QR code, you do it after getting the info.

I have their cheaper version of "manual" swingweight scale. It's not the most exact (like I would know my club is prolly between D3.5 - D4 but not exact) but it provides me enough info about what I want.

@DYOS4 it looks good! I’ll be looking forward to the results vs the machines at your shop.

When referring to the ‘LW,’ do you mean there is no way to select Lob Wedge on the club select or something else?

Correct. Weird they didn't fit a 0 and LW in there.

Results!

The 2 digital machines are very close and as noted the Mitchell reads a little lower.

Swingweight accuracy is always a function of your ability to measure accurately, no matter the method - including the balance point / mass calculators (provided the math is done correctly).

Most of the 'error' people talk about is from bad measurements, which like you see above can come from Scale mass error, it can come from fulcrum friction in the sw scale, it can come from build tolerance of the length of the arm from machine to machine, etc.

In the online calculators the largest error usually comes from balance point measurement error - graduations on rulers are pretty large... 1/8" balance point error is more than 1 SW point for the same mass.

Because of these sources of error it's difficult to say which scale, or method, is "most accurate" - most important is to use the same machine or method repeatedly for consistency. It's been stated in the thread, but it doesnt really matter if your club is swingweighted at D2 on 1 machine and D0.2 on another, only that you like the feel of it and all of your clubs swingweight within some tolerance using the same method or machine.

If you go to another machine, use a club you know is "balanced" to do a "calibration" and then use the relative measurements from there, is what I would suggest.

Sorry guys, dead thread, but since I just got one, I wanted to chime in with my thoughts. Simple. I love it. I got the XL model. I am really impressed by the engineering of the 3d printed pieces as a 3d printing tinkerer myself, I absolutely love how this all came together into a great utility. The level bubble, the way I can twist the holder to hold a raw shaft with grip above or a gripped club already, etc.

I just ordered the digital scale. I asked about rush shipping and the owner answered me right away and we were able to set it up. Can’t wait to get it on Wednesday.
money thing that he pointed out to me was to use the scale in a room around 70* because it is calibrated for that temp and there could be variations in readings due to this.

I bought the XL... works great - way cheaper than a metal golf works scale or the like, and is light and easy to store.  My workshop is used for a few different hobbies, and the easier things are to store away, the better.

Its also cool you measure to a gram-weight, rather than a swing weight (once you do the initial conversion).  Its more precise.

Precision, Accuracy, and Resolution

Dave Tutelman  --  December 23, 2007

Too many people use the terms "precision" and "accuracy" interchangeably. They shouldn't. Precision and accuracy are completely different concepts. Let's explore what they really mean, and how to tell the difference. While we're at it, we will also throw in "resolution", which is also too-often confused with precision.

This article first distinguishes between resolution and precision, then between precision and accuracy. In each case, we will start with an example chosen to make the point clear, then take one or two examples from clubmaking measurement to show why it's important to clubmakers.

A temperature sensitive swing weight scale?    I think that's a first.

This is what he sent me. Beyond my brain power but I appreciated him telling me.

The reason I say to keep and use indoors, is because of the load cells. They were calibrated at 70F.  When you use it at temperatures more than 10 degrees from that, the load cell might have a slight error.”
