Anyone else trying to decide between G/Fore Gallivanters and FJ Traditions?

Recommended Posts

I'm considering either Gallivanters or Traditions (solid white G/Fores, or all-white saddle FJs) for next year, and was wondering if anyone else was trying to decide/decided between the two..

So far, I've found the FJs to fit my foot well and feel comfortable right out of the box. I've determined which size I'd need in the Gallivanters, but they definitely feel as though they'd require some break-in before feeling completely comfortable (and I've read here that they WILL be extremely comfortable with that break-in). I think I prefer the totally clean look of the G/Fores, but the FJ's are traditional-looking and understated, which I like. The G/Fores' leather feels thicker, but the shoes are heavier. The FJs feel less "substantial," but they're lighter, the soles feel more cushioning, and they're less expensive.

Would love to hear your thoughts on either one and why you're considering/went ahead and bought them. If you've got a long-term review of either, I'd like to hear it.

I bought a pair of limited white Gallivanters in spring.  As soon as I put on a single shoe they were sold -- despite the $220.00 price tag; they just looked and felt right -- you know that thing, when you know that you know.  I really liked the lower, near zero drop heel.

I had zero break in issues -- comfortable on round one and even more so now.

After a summer of trial I was compelled to buy another pair this fall.

Good stuff. Did you find the G’s to fit you perfectly out of the box? The 11.5s that are the right length and width for me are very snug down on the tops of my big toe.

I had that happen with a different shoe. it didn't work out too well. ended up getting my toe tops scraped up through the socks.

some shoes might stretch a bit after a few wearings but the toe box and heel fit usually stay the same from day one, especially if the leather is thicker and the shoe is well made.

don't skimp, as your feet will always be a bit bigger halfway through the round, especially when twisting and turning during shots.

Yes, I did.  I'm standard width (D) 11 in shoes, including FJ.  I didn't have any "top-down" snug issues you report.  Like I said, right out-of-the-box perfect for me.

I have both and wear them both equally. Biggest difference I notice is the Gfores being heavier.  The Traditions sole is thinner feeling - I can feel the spikes when walking on hard surfaces - but it's not an issue on course. The "massaging" Gfore insole may be an issue for some but it's not for me. No break in needed for either shoe, and I have had no build quality issues with either.  As for size, I wear an 11.5M in FJ and a 12 in the Gfores.

Thanks. Good to hear about the sizing, because I’ve found the same to be true (I’d be an 11 in the FJs and an 11.5 in the Gs).

Both are very comfortable.  The GFore are more cushioned but that comes with some extra weight.  The light weight of the Traditions are great if you are a walker.  I find the Traditions to be a little more stable.  The sole is a little more rigid and my feet feel a little more locked in with the FJ's.  I find my feet moving a bit inside of the GFore with the additional padding around the heel and the somewhat slippery material they use for the foot bed.  I have the right size/fit in the GFore, it's just a softer shoe.  The GFore has a little more substantial build which gives it an advantage in durability.  My preference overall is the FJ but they are both great shoes.

I have both, and find that the comments here are remarkably similar and aligned with my thinking as well. It seems odd that that we can so easily reach consensus on something so apparently individual as two pairs of shoes, but are unable to do so with golf clubs.

If you mostly ride - FJ.
If you mostly push - GFore.

If you mostly carry - Biom.

Gallivanter is a half size smaller for me. Forgot about this little piece of info

Half-size smaller than you thought you'd need? Or half size smaller than the FJs? I measure to an 11.5, and would need that in the Gallivanters -- but I'm definitely an 11 in the FJs.

Had both. Fj much better to me. Dont like the massagers in the golf shoes too much and ive read lots of ppl have problems with the gfores litteraly xploding off their feet during swing. Didnt want that happening so got the footjoys and they have been great in every way to me. Got traditions, orgionals and the fancier ones... forgot the name.

My G/Fores are 1/2 size bigger than my footjoy. 11.5 FJ and 12 in the gallivanter

You guys that are finding the Gallivanters to be "too big," are you buying them in WIDE? Because the wide versions in the same sizes are HUGE in every way -- and I could definitely see sizing down in a wide size. But that's it. Otherwise, just eyeballing a standard Gallivanter 11.5 next to a FJ 11 next to each other on the floor, the FJ upper-profile LOOKS decently longer than the Gallivanter.

i think the FJ Traditions are garbage, too soft, poor traction, don't last and not stable. The FJ premieres are great and so are the Gallivanters. The Gallivanters are slightly lighter and more stable but you can't go wrong with either. The Gallivanters pick up a lot of leaves/debris in the fall so i wear the premieres more now. I wear 11 in Gfore, 10.5 in FJ and 11 in Nike and they all fit perfect. I think Gfore and Nike are about identical in fit/size (a touch narrow and run a little small).

They aren't softer nor can they have less traction than my Jordan ADG3s. They're soft and spikeless -- and they're not particularly "stable," either (but I haven't had problems with them over the last couple of seasons). Are your Traditions comments strictly in comparison to the Gallivanters, or to any golf shoe? Personally, having tried on the FJs a few times in the store, I'm thinking they'd be a step up in stability and traction -- but that's only an initial impression.

Similar experience for me on these shoes. G Fore a little heavier and sturdier and grab everything on the ground (such as leaves) especially as new. FJ traditions very comfy, more traditional FJ fit for me (compared to premieres) and much lighter. Cleat doesnt feel super substantial but have never had an issue with slippage after 1 year of use.

Both were comfy out of the box and walk regularly with both. Both are high quality shoes, not sure I would pay more than $200 for g fore but you can usually grab a sale or get em at a discount at a golf shop.

the traditions sole is just too soft, it's like a sponge with no good firmness or support. You can push the soles of the traditions in with your finger they are so soft and allows too much drift and movement. I would not consider the ADG3's particularly stable either but better/firmer than the traditions. If you want the best performance the gallivanters and premiers are the best! (haven't tried the Squares though lol!)
