Ballin' on a budget quick & dirty guide:

 

Driver - PING early G series are super forgiving and low spin enough.  Slight knock for being late to the adjustable party, but I mean that more so in regards to swapping shafts than influencing ball flight.  If you have to have adjustable, the Anser is a nice head, or the TMAG R1 offers a ton of adjustability in a good package, with the same adapter as today's heads.  Pretty solid right there.  

Fairways - TMAG all the way back to V Steels and '07 Burner

Hybrids - Just get an Adams and be done with it

Irons - Almost every golfer in the entire world would be just fine and dandy with a set of the early AP2s, even if they don't want to admit it.  

Wedges - A lot more options, but Cleveland has been outstanding for so many years

Putter - You're on your own here

Nah, doesn't have to be used.  But to be historically appreciated, almost universally agreed upon, was the original point.

 

But who cares?  If you've played the venerable V-steels, CB series, 915F's , and the Maltby smokes 'em all...   then I'm game for gluing that $90 puzzle together 🙂

I do have a Titleist 904F 17* 4 wood that is surprisingly easy to hit.  For some reason I keep forgetting about it. 

 

Just checked ebay and they are going for a decent price, most I looked at are under $50 shipped.

I was waiting to see if any older Titleist fairways would be mentioned. 910's 913's?  With the status that the 915F has, the predecessors couldn't have been that far off.  Or was it the Active Recoil Channel in the 915F that changed the game... 🤔

Upon reading through this thread, one of our amazing members reached out to me with a offer to sell a Titlest 915F to me at a ridiculously low price.  I'm almost certain that the price I paid doesn't even cover the time and effort it would take to box it up and ship it to me.

 

I often try to practice the same values, as I've given many clubs away to friends that I think would be better suited to use them than myself, but to receive the same treatment from a total stranger across these forums is unique, admirable, and definitely worth noting.  Be excellent to each other!
