Colorado WRX 2023

I have tee times on Eisenhower Friday and Saturday on their 'Winter 18".  That's the first 6 of the Silver course, last 3 of the Silver couse, then the back-9 of the Blue Course.

It all comes out to a Par 72 and since we can't post this time of year, it doesn't really matter.

Then I'm playing Sumo on Sunday.    The highs are 45, 54 and 54 those days with winds under 10mph.  Very playable!

I just got back from a work trip to Louisville this evening. Unpacked, and now I just repacked to go to Gunnison tomorrow for my kid's final hockey tournament of the season. If we play our cards all wrong (which actually means upsetting the #1 seed), we'll be playing on the outdoor rink at 8pm on Saturday night. brrrr

Very jealous. I've never played Sumo but I sure love Eisenhower.

Bring the ski gear and a nice warm drunk (mulled cider? Hot Tottie?) and you'll be alright :classic_wink:

I make my own Swedish mulled wine (glögg). I brought a batch (and crockpot) to the tournament in Vail in December, and it was a huge hit. Bringing another large bottle to Gunnison. 😄

My other problem is that I livestream the hockey games (like with a camera, 6-foot tripod, laptop, etc.), so I can't wear gloves.

Edited to add: if you ever find yourself driving towards Gunnison, be sure to stop by Elevation Beer Co in Poncha Springs. They're my absolute favorite Colorado brewery, and many of the beers they brew never make it out of their tap room.

I assume those are less trees? Looks like a bunch of snow still on the Broadmoor web cams

It was too good to be true - Eisenhower got snow Wednesday night/Thursday and are closed today and tomorrow.

I still have my Sunday tee time at Sumo, so the whole weekend isn't lost to weather.

I looked at Coal Creek for Saturday, but only singles available.

Anyone going to the Colorado Golf Expo next week?

I typically go on Friday's, before all the good deals are gone.

Last year was a new location and it was kind of a let down.  I'm hopeful that was due to COVID and this year is better.

Fingers crossed...

1:30. I got an email about an hour ago that they have the front 9 clear but with the cold temps tonight they are giving it a 25% shot the back 9 is open.

Either way, I'm pumped to hit some golf balls off of grass without needing to drive (or ride along) 2h each way.

That makes more sense. The holes by 36 have been clear for awhile now. There's no way the back 9 with the trees is clear.

I used to go, but I hate driving downtown and trying to park.  If it were still up on 54th I’d probably go.

Dismal River building 3rd course and doubling rooms

Interesting since conditions were horrible most of last year on the existing courses. Maybe the new mgt company will help.

Collindale, Broadlands and Walnut Creek announced as US Open local qualifying sites in CO this year. Has Broadlands been on there before? I don't remember them hosting local US open qualifying in the past.

Walnut and Collindale are every year spots. Broadlands hasn't been on that list before, it was Commonground last year. My last round at Broadlands was winning the match play qual with a 66 last year. Those memories are too good and I would only feel like I would have to live up to it to go back for that qualifier.

On the other hand, I missed a 3 footer on 18 at Collindale last year to make it into the playoff. Something to prove?

Greens were fully reclaimed mid September (which is very late). Greens are now tarped in the winter, and they have a superintendent for each course.

They’re adding 160 beds, and presumably MANY more members (lots folks got off the waitlist last year).

Message me for the good bad and ugly if membership is on anyone’s radar. Would bet Kempler was brought in to shake some of the crazy out of that place but they have gone to EXTREME measures to raise capital before…

Crazy how many times they that place has been tried to be saved.

I agree adding a third course is shocking given history. Wonder if they are thinking going semi private?  Or something to get the money to come in to maintain it properly.

Nope. They're doing fine according to the article. It says they are slammed with members and need more rooms and another course to handle the volume. With 475 members (it's always more than the reported number since they fudge and expect some people to quit every year) and a short season, I can see that. It was probably like Bandon with the number of people they have a lot of days, but less poorly run due to staffing shortages.

Still though that's a lot they're going to be spending. Got to be at least $10 million if not a lot more. I wonder how much they're going to bump the membership. You could go to 600 with that number of beds and 3 courses. Wild. If the economy tanks there could be another bankruptcy in their future.

There will always be a buyer for Dismal. Great property, two REALLY great courses.

Unless member equity was discharged as debt during one of the bankruptcies they would have to pay back 8M if they went semi-private. I'd bet you Kempler came with some capital and they cleared some names from the waitlist last year at 25k a head.

It could also be they have enough people waitlisted to increase their membership to 600 with the construction of a new course.

There are 550 members, 475 national, 75 town. They went to a waitlist in spring of 2019, and capped that waitlist towards the end of the 2020 season. They're doubling the number of beds, I would not be at all surprised if they doubled the number of members, which is maybe doable with the national membership model and 54 holes. The Snomass Club has 1050 members.

Right now you have to be on top of booking tee times for the big holiday weekends. Late August and onward if you're willing to tiptoe around corporate outings you often have the place to yourself. That's my play, conditions peak in September and October it's cooler out there, less windy.

Anyone know what's happening at GVR?

I know there was talk about installing TopTracer on the range. Pretty sure they were listed on the TopTracer website for a while (now just lists Ravenna). I think they also hint it on their website under the membership section...

(Unlimited range balls (Mon.- Thurs. only) until new range technology upgrade begins)

In reality, all it's going to do is make the $110 gift card sitting in my bag the last three years even less valuable.
