I think I'm finally about 98% strength back! My balance is still coming back and my main golf workout focus this year will be balance. Also weird, but it seems I picked up 10 yards on everything. I hit ~100 balls on the GCQ last night and both my PW and 6i were flying 10 yards farther.

Just saw the high in Canon City is going to be 50 on Friday.  Just made a tee time at Four Mile Ranch - crazy golf, but much better than no golf!

It is cart-path only, but 18 holes of golf and a cart for $39 -- it's worth the drive!  Especially considering we're still covered in snow in the Denver area.

Despite it being over freezing the previous night when we played a week or so ago (low was supposed to be 35) the ground was still very hard at 11 with a lot of melted water on the greens that a guy was slowly getting around and squeegeeing off. With a previous night low in the 20s there's a good chance you'll have frozen greens all morning. I would not want to play that course with cement greens.

(I'd love to replicate the situation at Omni, robust membership, public priced off during the high season.)

Despite the price, GVR still gets a lot of public play. It's not similar to Omni at all. Omni doesn't need public play. GVR would fold without public play.

Heck. Haven’t been out for a few years but I remember it being dog slow sometimes. Someone’s gotta open a club in north east Denver

If you're playing weekday mornings to early afternoon, GVR probably isn't bad, but they don't have issues filling the tee sheets on the weekend.

 

All the remaining land immediately north of Denver is likely too flat to make into interesting golf at a reasonable enough cost for a public course and prohibitively expensive to make into an interesting enough private to garner enough members. At least if you are up in that GVR or further north area you'll only be 30-40 minutes to what should be excellent golf at Rodeo Dunes.

If the course was actually in good shape, Buffalo Run for $2400/yr actually wouldn't be a terrible deal.

This to me is why I couldn't be a member there. When this is a fact it means their incentives are not aligned with their membership. When you're semi-private and need the public play they are going to prioritize selling that last tee time for discounted rates which has all the problems we've spoken about before. In the long run it means busier tee sheets and slower rounds of golf with public that pays about what you're paying on a per-round basis.

What is the percentage of people that take care of the golf course (fill divots, rake bunkers, fix pitch marks) from those discounted tee times?

I worked at Buff Run from 2006-2010 and I can attest to the course's potential. They would grown in the rough and speed up the greens for the Denver Open, great track and a great test. I used to go out once a year for nostalgia, but I stopped, breaks my heart to see her in bad shape

Exciting development for sure, probably beats the 30/40 minute drive to Meridian. I want to get my son going this summer, it's important to me that he access to as much or as little golf as he wants.

To me that primarily means a golf course within bike riding distance from your house that requires no money for him to go out there.

 

That could definitely tip the scales to joining GVR just so he has full-time access (assuming you will live in the neighborhood.)

 

I see it all the time here at Fox. There's a lot of middle and high school kids that play almost every afternoon, sometimes with the pops, sometimes with friends.

I play it once or twice a year since the layout is actually pretty good and you can't beat the price in prime season. It's not the superintendent's fault. They're still screwed by the salt deposits that keep coming up and killing the fairways on about 7 or so holes. I was talking to one of the assistant pros there once. They've tried different grass strains and all kinds of things. You'd probably have to dig it up and cap it like courses that are built on top of landfills. Once you get past the holes affected by the salt, the conditioning is pretty similar to other courses around Denver.

Just finished reading through the thread, and some great knowledge here. I moved into a place off the 13th hole of Mariana Butte last year, and have started golfing much more since. Have been playing very casually for many years, but probably played nearly as many rounds in 2022 as in my life before that. Still terrible, but started taking lessons and intend to actually play with some intention going forward. Excited to be able to get back on the course in a couple months.

This one was primarily the fault of the superintendent. There was also some damage caused by dumb kids but it came back once we got a competent superintendent again. As soon as he got there he started taking soil samples and noticed how awful it was. The old guy wasn't doing samples and therefore had no idea what was going on in the soil. Seems pretty simple but it's beyond some in the business.

It's why I've been trying to get him to Fox, he's a rockstar.

 

Fortunately for Englewood, they hired him at Broken Tee about three months ago. Jeremiah has gotten older and was looking for the pension, benefits, and no overtime hours that a muni provides. You're on notice all you South Denver people, Broken tee is going to be in good shape come July-August. He said it was pretty rough so he told me to wait until then.

That will be really interesting to see.  That, along with Indian Tree par 3 and Lake Arbor is where I learned to play.  My paternal grandparents lived on the other side of Santa Fe growing up and my maternal grandparents lived in Arvada, and I grew up in the middle by Mile High.  I will definitely make the trip over to Broken Tee if they are making an effort on grounds.

That is awesome. I like Broken Tee but it's been in pretty bad shape for years. It's still cheap too because of the conditions.

You could walk it but I wouldn't recommend it. The back nine would be pretty rough. There is a four hole stretch that goes up and down a good deal.

 

If @Dancin doesn't walk it, 97% of people probably shouldn't either.

There are people who walk it and doing it when it is cooler and cart path only is the time to do it. I did it once for a second round of the day out there and I probably will never do it again for 18. The up and down isn't that bad but there are a few tees on the back 9 you have to walk up and back to which get old very quickly. The front 9 isn't bad at all for walking though.

Awesome to hear about Broken Tee.  I only played it once and thought the layout/holes were very fun and the back especially had some pretty holes.  Place definitely has potential to be really good.
