Just got an ALBATROSS! Who else has one??

Well 2023 is going to be a brutal roller coaster with golf gods…

 

Our club facilities are closed for winter maintenance for the week but the course is open for members if walking.  My cousin was supposed to join me but he bailed last minute so I played by myself. Was about 45* out. 

 

Proceed to the 510y par 5 7th. Hit a great drive to right side of fairway. 168 to back left pin. Hit a beautiful 8i right at it. Made nothing of it because it’s an elevated green and the left side of the green is blind from the right half of the fairway. Walking up to the green I wasn’t seeing my ball so started taking a video. See my pitch mark about 10’ short of the cup and boom, there it was, and unwitnessed albatross!  
 

Since it happened I’ve googled about the odds and rarity of it and wasn’t aware it was quite as rare according to the links I’ve seen at about 6M to 1. 
 

Who else has been blessed with one?

Congrats! I have had 2 now, both on same hole short par 5 about 7 years apart.

I've come within 2-3 inches twice but have never made one. Both were approaches on par 5's that ended up that close

Close but no cigar x2 here:  

 

-  Near miss on a short par 4 with a 2i WAY back in the day.

-  2” short, dead in the heart, 2nd shot on a par 5 with a 6i - that was way back in the day too...  damn, I’m getting old.

That is awesome!! Never had one but witnessed a hole in one on a short part 4. Congrats to you.

This is an entirely other complex story! I guess I’ve technically had 3 but I don’t count them personally. I lived in an apartment complex years ago for one summer that had a very small, executive 9 hole course. All jokes are between 80-130y.  I played it every evening after work and I had 3 in the span of about 6 weeks.  I’ve never had one on a traditional 18 hole course.

Fun fact - me, my dad and my brother all have an albatross, none of us have a hole in one.

Now that is a fun fact. I have a buddy(0-2HC) who got one in 2021 at our club. Him and I are the only 2 the club has on record. He also doesn’t have a HIO.

A plus is no bar bill like a HIO... Not that I would know because I don't have one of those.

I have one as well. Similar situation. Winter day with decent weather. Mine was actually a long iron that was suppose to end up just short of the green because I didn’t want to hit a wood. Buddy told me it went in. I didn’t believe him until I pulled it out of the cup!

Had never had a HIO and about 16 years ago got my 1st Albatross.

 

About 10 years later got my 1st HIO. A couple or 3 years after got my 2nd 'tross and just 18 months or so ago got my 2nd HIO.

 

Fun(?) fact. Didn't see any of the 4 go in the hole..........

Congrats.  I do not have a HIO, but had an albatross in competition a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.  I consider both as feats of luck far more than golf skill.

 

All jokes aside, in the last 6-8 months my memory has taken a serious turn for the worst.  I'm old.  I don't remember names and faces like I should.  Heck, I can't recall if I ate breakfast some days.  But some of my clear memories are of some golf shots I took over the years.  Some good, some bad.

... Not So fun fact. I have 2 Albatross. I do not have a hole in one. My cousin has never broken 100 and has 4. I watched him top a 5 wood down a hill from 155yds, hop a small creek, roll onto the green and in the hole. About a year later, he sliced a driver from 180yds into a tree solidly smacking a thick limb, bounced back on the green and in the hole. The Golf Gods certainly have a sense of humor.

I've never had one, but been in a group when someone had one; he drove a par and it went in the hole. The people ahead of us were still on the green. We thought they were jumping up and down in anger until we got up to the hole and they were still dancing with excitement.

I got one back in the days when woods were persimmon and balls were wound. I forget the exact hole details, and it has since been changed in a redesign, but it was a bit over 500 yard, slightly uphill, slight dogleg left par 5. Driver and 4 wood.......

Our club gives $1000 credit for a member getting a HIO. He can use it in the bar or golf shop.

Dog leg Par 5. Cut a bit of the corner off and got a ton of roll out. Had a 6 iron left to the hole. Best part is I got to see it. Seemed like slow motion.

 

That was almost 20 years ago.  15 years (5 years ago) later I got my 1st and only HIO.

 

Was playing with some friends. One of them was a very long hitter. Uphill par 5 so you can't really see the surface of the green. He hits a 4 iron for his second shot. We get up to the green and he's looking just to the side where the bushes are and says, "found it". Chops it out and we proceed to play out. When I went over to pull the pin there was a ball in the cup... yes, his 4 iron he had hit. First time I've ever seen anyone embarrassed to have a hole out from way back...

 

Never played with him again.

Yep. Once, back in 1999. Holed out a 4 iron from 185ish on #7 at Hyland Hills GC outside of Pinehurst, NC.

Congrats on the albatross AND the 342yd drive!

 

I only have one albatross, but luckily for me it was on a 285yd par four (many years ago when I could hit it that far), so I ticked both boxes at once.  Have had one other HIO, unfortunately due to green contours didn't get to see either one go in ☹️

Just played the same hole today with a better drive and 150 in this time..I actually decided to video the entire hole just for the hell of it.  Lo and behold, my approach was going straight at it again so i kept the video going and ran up to the green to find this!  This close to another albatross on same hole 2 times in row. 🤯

Congrats OP. 

 

I've had two albatrosses, both from about 190 out on Par 5's.   Didn't see either one go in.  In both cases, a playing partner and I looked all around the green for the ball before finally saying "might as well look in the hole."   Never had a HIO, but blew out the side of the cup once in an "almost dunk" from 150ish (ended up at about 25') 😞 😞
