Just got an ALBATROSS! Who else has one??

I was fortunate enough to score an albatross back on September 6, 2011 at the Loon Lake Golf Club. Hole 8, Par 5, is a 450 yard, sharp dogleg left. I struck a good drive left center of the fairway & walked up the over the hill to get an idea where the green was. I was about 210 yards out and hit as pure a 7 wood as possible. I knew it was a good strike and I come over the hill, I was expecting to see it somewhere on the green. I looked behind the green, right and left of the green but couldn't see it. Just as I was getting ready to walk back to play a penalty stroke I happened to notice a ball mark just about a foot in front of the pin. What do you know, I look in the cup and there's my Callaway Diablo ball. Wow.

I couldn't believe I got an albatross before I got my first hole in one which occurred about 6 years later on June 11, 2017 at the St. Paul Golf Club on coincidentally Hole 8, a Par 3 that played 168 yards that day.

Just had my second one.

The course ends with two par 5's, 17 and 18.

On 3-1-08 I hit driver, cutting the corner and most likely hit the cart path (can't see around the corner) and ball was way down at 175 out. Easy 6 iron hits the front of the green, rolls out and drops in.

FF to 4-8-24  Relatively short par 5. Playing somewhere around 510. Hit one of my better drives drawing the ball that rolled out more than was expected or normal. Almost wonder if I hit a sprinkler head...  5 wood at 220 and hits about 10 yards short, big bounce, rolls out and in she goes.

Pretty cool.  Have now had an albatross on 17 and 18. Talking with the guys in the Pro shop they had not heard of anyone else that has done this.

I've had a couple close calls over the years, but finally got one in February at Kickingbird in Oklahoma.

Par 5 where I aimed right of the fairway at the cart path expecting the ball to either move left or right and it ended up right next to the path. I was about 217 out and needed to hit about a 35-yard hook that needed to stay under a tree directly in front of me. I hit a 3/4 P790 UDI (2i) and as soon as I hit it, I turned to my friend Todd and said, "dude, I hit that so well". We couldn't see it down, but I knew it was tracking towards the green. We went to play his ball next (about 100 yards out) and I didn't see my ball on the green, so I assumed it was in the greenside bunker. We got up to the green and I saw a ball about 20 yards behind the green. I walked up there to play my shot and noticed it wasn't mine. We looked around the green and couldn't find anything. Todd walked by the hole and said, "it's in the  hole". I didn't believe him as he and his brother have pulled that trick before. So, I walked down to the hole and there it was! It's a bummer that I didn't see it drop, but I'm happy that it was a bit of a hero shot as well that dropped. It means more to me that I had to execute a difficult shot and I did it to perfection!

Well 2023 is going to be a brutal roller coaster with golf gods…

Our club facilities are closed for winter maintenance for the week but the course is open for members if walking.  My cousin was supposed to join me but he bailed last minute so I played by myself. Was about 45* out.

Proceed to the 510y par 5 7th. Hit a great drive to right side of fairway. 168 to back left pin. Hit a beautiful 8i right at it. Made nothing of it because it’s an elevated green and the left side of the green is blind from the right half of the fairway. Walking up to the green I wasn’t seeing my ball so started taking a video. See my pitch mark about 10’ short of the cup and boom, there it was, and unwitnessed albatross!

Since it happened I’ve googled about the odds and rarity of it and wasn’t aware it was quite as rare according to the links I’ve seen at about 6M to 1.

Who else has been blessed with one?

Did you tell the pro shop about it? My uncle did that and they gave him a free club. Either way, I bet that felt amazing. Congrats

Had one over 20 years ago. Downwind par 5, storm brewing in the distance. Good drive ended up in the first cut very close to the 200 yard stake. Hit 6 iron, back when a good 6 iron was 180 now low 190s, right at it, took a hop hit the stick and fell in. When I got to the flag and reached in to grab the ball and big clap of thunder hit. Club blew the siren. Luckily the tee of the hole we just played was next to the parking lot. Had a couple celebratory beers and the storm passed. Next hole, hit the drive and approach in the drink for a quad.

I was fortunate enough to make an albatross back on Sept 6, 2011 on Hole 8 (par 5, 450 yds, using driver & 7 wood) at the Loon Lake GC. Six years later I made my first hole in one June 11, 2017 on hole 8 (par 3, 176 yds, using 7 iron) at the St.Paul G&CC. Fun fact: both my albatross & HIO were made using a Callaway Diablo golf ball.

You can register your albatross at the following: "doubleeagleclub.org"

There is a guy in my club claiming he's had 6 albatrosses, personally I don't believe him but what is the most you've heard of someone having?

He's also had 9 hole in one's apparently.

Two - by me. HIOs 9 is a lot, but it's not crazy high. 6 albatrosses is crazy high. Must be playing the kids tees.

I made an Albatross about 7 years ago. I was playing with some Mens club guys in a Match, not during mens club. 214 yds, 4 hybrid, I was aiming over a tree about 20 yards left of the pin because of the wind. Hit it right over the tippy top of the tree, watched it land on the green and didn't watch anymore. My partner was in the bushes by the green so I hopped in saying "i've got a putt for Eagle, let's find yours".  Get up by the green and don't even look at the green..then I'll remember this the rest of my life, guy on other team was from Texas, and he said with a little drawl..."Dude..your balls in the cup".  I can hear it plain as day still.

I've had an "Albatross*" - i.e., an albatross with an asterisk. The story:

It was late November in the northeast. Weather very cold. Most local courses had closed, but one stayed open (the owner was a fanatic that kept his course open year round). But as with many courses, he was taking winter months to do course maintenance and upgrades. So there was a par 4 that ordinarily played 375 - 400 yards (depending on the tee box). But the course was completely redoing the tee boxes, lengthening the hole. Entire construction area was roped off, and a temporary tee box put up. Except the temporary tees were around 165 yards - your basic, run of the mill public course par 3 distance. I holed out.

So then, "technically" I shot a 1 on a par 4 - an albatross. In fact, I was so jacked about it that I made it a point after the round to ask the starter whether the course had assigned a temporary local rule that would make the hole a par 3 (the answer was no, they hadn't bothered to as the construction wasn't going to take very long, very few people were playing, and scores couldn't be entered into GHIN anyway).

So yeppers, I have an albatross, but I can't really feel like it was a "real" one. (Still, any HIO is way cool!)

Winter-Tees up, par 5. Drive down the right side of fairway. 2nd shot-6-iron from 190 with 25mph wind helping to an elevated green. Neven saw it go in but was in the cup when walking to the green. Only one I have had. No HIO's to speak of though I have witnessed two of them live with playing partners.
