Kenny Perry Retired

I don’t know if this was old news, but I just saw the article.  Kenny is retiring to care full time for his wife who has Alzheimer’s.  That is a tough road for any family and I hope for the best for Kenny and his Family.  

 

For those of you a who are bit younger, Kenny Perry was a great ball striker and probably spent a dozen years as one of the best all around Drivers of the ball.  With clunky looking irons and a figure 8 golf swing motion, he almost always played the same shot, a big high draw.

He loved his shovels and played very well too. He was successful on the PGA tour well into his 40's. He has always been a big time family man so retiring to look after his wife is no surprise. Best of luck to his family.

I remember when Perry putted with the old school Ping Craze-E putter which a member of his club gave it to him because "it didn't work". Perry ends up winning with it 3 times on the PGA Tour and made the Ryder Cup in 2008.

Yeah I remember back in the day he preferred to pay the regular TM R7 irons (not TP) and played them for a few years after his discontinuation.  He almost won The 2009 Masters with them.

He was on Katrek and McGinnis on siriusXM and discussed this maybe a week or so ago, sort of made it sound like it was the first time he discussed it publicly and it certainly caught both them off guard.

 

I remember reading that his unique move and that steady ball flight were due to an injury that he had to work around. Something with his shoulder I think. But KP could hit it in his day.

He had one of the best footwork actions, not unlike Gene Littler and Moe Norman. He’s still the oldest player to lead the tour in strokes gained off the tee and approach shots combined in 2005, when he was 44.

Years ago I caddied for a close friend of Kenny's in the USGA Mid-Amateur, part of which was held at a course where Kenny won a tour event a few years before.  During one of the practice rounds Kenny called him, and I got to talk to him for a bit.  Couldn't have been nicer...except when he was talking crap about his buddy and trying to get me to repeat what he said just to mess with the guy.  I'll never forgot telling him where the pin was on a hole and him responding "s*&t, he ain't got that shot...and tell him I said so".

I rooted for him at the 2009 Masters, he seems to be a genuinely good and down-to-earth guy. Alzheimer's sucks really bad. I liked what he said about it and how he said it. I wish the Perry family all the best!

I knew he had cut way back how much he had been playing.  Did not know that about Sandy.

 

I don't advertise this but I am from Franklin.  I went to school with all his kids.  You'll occasionally run into him in town a bit.  Been several years but he was playing behind me at the course that bears his name.  He caught up to me on hole four.  I was walking.  He can still bomb drives.

Always been a big Kenny Perry fan. He could absolutely go on a heater once in awhile and stick irons really close to win a  tournament. Loved his move into the ball, his sequenceing was different but the guy was so country strong it worked.

Now he does the important stuff, family is always first.

A few things here:

Growing up in Kentucky, Kenny Perry was always known as a terrific human being. 
He is two swings away from being in the Hall of Fame. If he wins the PGA and The Masters he’s in, lost both in playoffs. 
When he hit it to an inch on 16 at The Masters I thought he was going to finish it off. Cabrera got extremely lucky in that playoff also. 
Alzheimer’s is awful, just a curse on the family. I hope the best for him, and admire his commitment and love for his wife. I would be surprised to hear he would do anything less.

I have nothing but admiration & respect for Kenny Perry for taking on the care of his lovely wife.  Alzheimer's is tough for the whole family, and she is only 62 yrs old, even tougher. Prayers for Sandy Perry & the entire Perry family on this difficult journey.

According to your typical WRXer the shovels are the sole reason Kenny Perry played that draw. Had he been playing some real players' clubs with zero offset he'd be known as a push fader.
