To upgrade or not?

r5 dual

I have a taylormade r5 dual N 10.5 w/ a stiff 65g aldila nv. I got it a couple years ago and it's been treating me pretty well but I'm having a clubhoe itch to upgrade. I'll definitely have at least some money to blow sometime around summer and I was wondering if it was really worth it to upgrade? Opinions? If so, what should I upgrade to?

I'm not 100% but I think I hit around 240-250+ (was around 230 last fall but I've been going through some big swing changes including much more shoulder turn) -tee markers at my course are all up and I haven't been paying attetion but I am definitely in places where I haven't been before. I'm not sure my swing speed but would guess around 100. Typical shot is a mid-draw. Basically I'm just looking to max-out distance. Interested in g10, xls, and sumo 5000. I sort of like the traditional head shape ..or whatever my r5 is, but I can get used to whatever. I don't mind a loud tinny-sound; I actually prefer a more metallic sound/feel than a solid thud. so what do you say?

The r5 is a solid head. Played it myself. Since then I've gone to the r5 tp and now burner tp. The burner is a little more forgiving and maybe a hair longer, but not much.

The R5 dual is a fantastic club, especially when you find a shaft that really fits your swing. I played the R5 from December 04-December 07. And truth be told, that club still did absolutely everything I wanted.

 

Once it reached it's mandatory retirement age I replaced it with a G10. The G10 is a very good stick, but I'm not going to lie and say it's way longer or way more forgiving than the R5. It performs just as well, but sounds and feels a bit better.

 

IMHO, there just isn't that big a distance/forgiveness difference with many of the good 460cc driver heads. The R5 is a classic. I'm sure you'll find something else to buy, but I doubt it'll be signficantly better than the R5.

Yeah, take the money you'd spend on the new club, keep the r5 and get some more lessons. That will max out your distance more than a new driver.

alright. i get lessons every week anyway which means more money to spend on other clubs. looks like new wedges are in order thanks for the opinions (but still if someone has a miracle club to mention please do)

idk man, i noticed a substantial distance gain from moving from a launcher 460 with nv65 shaft to my new cally.

 

may be because of the shaft, may be because of the shorter length and may be because of the head itself but my good hits were a good 15-20 yards longer (seriously) and my fathers shots did the same thing.

 

may not be a bad idea to demo some of the new stuff and newer shafts to see what happens. oh yea, cutting down to 44.5 inches or less may not be a bad idea either....

If you just have to ho and you are not using the TP version of the R5 I would definitely recommend it I have no problem stating it is one of the best ever made and you can find them on flea bay New w/ cover and weight kit for around $185 or less all with exotic shafts the Diamana 83 and Mitsubishi Rayon TP-LT 70 are great shafts.

aw you just had to.....................! I'm already at 44.5 or 44.75 I don't remember exactly. hmmmmm oh well .... guess i'll just try not to think too much about it and if I do happen to try one and start bombing it past my r5, go with that.

I agree that the r5 tp is one of the best ever. They can be had for far less than $185 on ebay, tough, if you are willing to go for 9/10 condition - probably arond $100.

Why don't you go get a thorough driver fitting from a qualified club fitter?

 

I don't mean head down to your local golf galaxy or big box retail store, but rather find a solid clubfitter with some type of launch monitor and an outdoor range to find out whether you have an optimum fit or not.

I have three (3)!!!! of the R5 Duel's two 9.5 and one 8.5 (still new in the plastic! I have tried the R7 tp, the Sumo 5000 the FT5..................get the picture? I just put the R5 back in the bag, I am going to pick up an R5 tp and give that a try, have a V2 shaft and a 757 to try in it...ho ho ho (wife says oh no!!!) Good luck in your quest.

The 757 in my r5 tp was the best feeling combo I've ever had. Plenty long, too.
