Paul Azinger Commentaries (MERGED)

In general American tv must hate silence because the crews talk constantly. The foreign coverage embraces silence to add to the tension off the moment. Few lead analysts can be required to talk so much and not become a cliche machine. Azinger had big shoes to fill but it is hard to believe he is the best nbc could find.

Oh come on, now.  Radio?  I love golf as much as anyone, but there is no way I want to listen to it on the radio.  Paulson may be very rough to listen to, but I think having to do golf.... on radio... is enough of a handicap already that nobody will come out sounding good.

Surprisingly the do a nice job for it being golf on the radio ... their podcasts stink though. Just awful.

For any person interested in learning and, or, improving their own game the lead color commentators such as Faldo and Azinger provided excellent insight and knowledge. Listen and learn.

After reading these threads for years and years on wrx I think I am blessed to be annoyed by so few golf announcers. The list is very short:

Chris Berman

Jim Gray

Paige McKenzie (I don't know why she bothers me as I like her personally. Perhaps it's the tone of her voice. Why Golf Channel has seemed to pick her to replace the wonderful Judy Rankin is beyond me. I'd much rather listen to the dulcet tones of Karen Stupples.)

Thankfully Berman and Gray no longer seem to be on the golf beat.

I have the same reaction to Paige's voice. It occurred to me recently that I have not had to endure listening to her in a while and was hoping she had been excused from GC, but I don't know for sure.

Stups is pretty good. Her BF Jerry Foltz is woefully underutilized at GC as he is very good at what he does.

Fortunately, I'm not fixated on golf analyst like some on this fine board, but I find Paul Azinger better than a lot of others behind the Mic. People complained about Johnny Miller so what's new.....NBC could have done a lot worst. IMO...

I suggest that the people he annoys should concentrate on the golf and not so much on the talking heads....

It's funny, there is an article on The Athletic today about the NFL announcer sweepstakes going on right now, with Buck and Aikman moving to ESPN, and speculation about who will replace them on the lead announce teams for Fox NFL and MLB along with who will handle the upcoming Amazon NFL booth. The comments about all of those voices are much the same as what we see here. I can only conclude that a majority do not like any announcer.

I can give or take Zinger. His issue in my opinion is he tries too hard to make a situation seem bigger than life or says stuff that comes accross fabricated the night before.

A while back he had scripted out that shots were being “hit with a lot of integrity “ and said it all day once. He meant commitment, and someone obviously explained this to him after the round because he didn’t use it again the next day or since.

He just has to think too much which leads to mistakes. He just said let's see if he can hit this fairway as it will be a heck of a drive if he does. It was hole 7 where everyone in his group striped it.

Cam Bogeys Casey struggling all day makes first Birdie and Zinger acts like Casey has 3 shot lead. Talking like Cams wheels fell off and the 8 unders can make a run with easy holes like Cam has already played them. He just over reacts to everything.

he never says anything intelligent. at least Lanny sounds like he has a beer and brisket stuck up and can't stop talking and rarely says anything useful..Paul just isn't cut for the job. There's a coal mine missing a sup

I think that might be partially it. The on course reporters sometimes sound more seasoned. One thing that Miller did have was a knowledge of history and perhaps more knowledge of the golf swing.
Zinger really tries to hard at times, and that leads to repetition.
You always knew where Miller stood on a shot or a player. He, I believed studied a green or a fairway more.

it’s still early in Azingers broadcast career.

Azinger is a tour winner, major champion, and winning Ryder Cup captain. His years of experience give him insights that you, the average golf fan should appreciate.

He knows when things are getting down to the nitty gritty and when the cream is rising to the top. He can tell when the situation results in a player licking his chops. When a player makes a putt Azinger is astute enough to observe that the ball would have gone in in a thimble and that might spur the player on to a victory that will be a life changing experience. So just appreciate the knowledge he imparts to you in his commentary.

Really? He's been announcing golf continually since 2005 or so. He began at ESPN/ABC when he was with Mike Tirico and Nick Faldo. LOL!

I agree with everything you stated above and I really like him as a player and for everything else he has done in golf. Especially the Ryder cup, the incident with Ballesteros and his Captaincy as well.

Just not an announcer. He talks just to talk and when he gets on something he just keeps repeating it and doesn't let it go.

The fear is that Nantz will talk CBS into letting that idiot Romo join the already horrendous CBS crew.

Why is the question ... does he have Epstein pics of the tv executives. There is no good reason for him to hold these jobs. Because he won some lucky PGA, so did Shaun Micheal. The guy is awful. Time to move on NBC or TGC or whoever else wants to hire this bum.
