I look at it like learning to hit the ball.  Start with hitting it hard, and then learn to control it.  Dudes a player, not a trained broadcaster.  Give him some training and experience, he'll learn which is which.  Can't expect a guy who doesn't even do it as his primary job to be perfect right off the hop.  

 

Justin Leonard sounds a bit like he's worried about losing his job.....

Paul Azinger, Dan Hicks and Rodger are three of my favorites. Paul and Rodger were both touring pros that brings a wonderful perspective to the commentary in the booth and on the playing field.

 

Dan H. has been calling golf for twenty years, most next to Johnny Miller.... I'll put his expertise up against anyone........

 

Current PGATOUR player still come to Azinger for a lesson or two......that being said, Some WRXers think that they know more about what's relevant to the telecast than the above cast .......amazing!!

Zinger just isn't a natural at commentating. He trys way to hard with his words and beats the dead horse into the dirt. That horse was "knuckle fade" yesterday.

Hicks has only become tolerable this year, with Tiger not playing. For the last 20 years he has been unlistenable thanks to his Tiger fixation.

I'm thinking, that I'd rather have Tiger Fixation than the dreaded clinical announcers fixation which is very debilitating.....

Count me in the group that can't stand Leonard or Azinger...   Zinger does latch on to something and just blurts it out the rest of the day.  The other thing he says constantly- "this guy is the best in the world at this shot" - who ever happens to be hitting whatever shot at the time, he just throws this line out.

70-80 yard pitch, he said last week, JT was the best in the world.  This week on Friday- Kiz was, then yesterday, Scheffler had one- and bingo- He's the best in the world at this shot.....

 

NBC coverage is just bad...   blaming a boat for Scheffs scuff into the bunker and then all of them chimed in on it, get real.

Haha.  He does say "knuckle" quite a bit.  I'm happy with solid contact so had to google how to hit a knuckle ball in golf.  Interesting, and even Crossfield says you aren't going to find this spot very often unless you're really good.

I prefer watching the golf tournament taking place rather than, if he is onsite, seeing him just standing around or walking to his shot, or if he is offsite, hearing about a social media post he liked or whether his morning's bowel movement was of the softer or more solid variety.

I mean, it's completely a preference thing: What should and should not be covered/how things should be covered.

 

So of course there's going to be plenty of opinions and disagreements on something like this -- which is one of the reasons a place like WRX can exist and thrive! 🙂

I think the biggest problem w all commentators is they talk way too much. Golfs quietness while player talks to caddie is what we are missing.  It seems only at the Majors they shut up and let the viewer feel the ambiance of the shot and crowd. These guys just need to shut up 🤐 

 

mike tirica is the worst and he doesnt even play golf my guess just educated in media

Azinger commentary is information-free. Before the shot, he tells us it’s either hard or easy. Afterwards he tells us it was good or or it was great. Occasionally he tells us the player is great too. He has a small assortment of adjectives and hokey sayings to elaborate with. And that’s it. It’s hard to imagine he was a successful pro player without knowing any factual bases for such opinions, but after years in the booth with no evidence to the contrary, we must conclude it’s so. He’s nothing more than the loud-mouthed guy who thinks he’s way funnier than he is that you get stuck standing next to at a tournament tee box.

I remember listening to the KNBR morning show from the ATT&T a number of years ago and apparently Azinger tried to big time the radio guys when they asked for an interview so they roasted him when they got him on the air.  I guess that compared to Dubs, Niners, Raiders, A's and Giants players they normally dealt with they did not think much of good old Paul.

2022 US Open 3rd round broadcast, Azinger says about three times that Will Zalatoris “shanked” an approach shot.  The shot was something like 180 (maybe more) out, and Zalatoris hit it almost pin high, but right (maybe 30 yards?), in the heavy rough.  Pin-high shank?  I don’t think so! How can one play for years on tour and not know what a shank is?
