2024 PGA Tour Schedule

First, yes, I have too much time on my hands.  Second, I love this stuff.  Let's hear what you would like to see for the first calendar year schedule in a long while.

Notes/highlights (my opinions):

  • If PGA is smart, they eliminate the meaningless Fall events and alternate events (move them into a longer main season)
  • I have Honda dropping off in 2024
  • Strategic alliance extends across the 6 major professional tours (Flagship tournament adds: PGA Tour - PLAYERS, Euro - British PGA, Australasian - Australian Open, Japan - Japan Open, Sunshine - South African Open, Asian Open - TBD) and f
  • Houston moves to the Spring
  • Greensboro moves to traditional pre-Masters spot in the Spring
  • Canadian Open is elevated
  • BMW Championship reverts back to the Western Open
  • TOUR Championship returns to rotating venues

So people prefer no golf in the fall or prefer silly season that we used to have which was a bunch of meaningless exhibition hit and giggles?

Less money and opportunities for golfers doing away with the fall.

I guess we all get to spend more time with our families.....wherther we like it or not. LOL!

Silly season events don't interest me at all. I just started watching the PNC father and son.

Whose dumb idea was it to give golfers an off season?

They only play 18 weeks a year.....

As long as the PGA is in the spring and the Players in march the schedule is going to be jacked up.

They started having the Houston Open the week before The Masters as the course it was on Redstone/GC of Houston was bermuda overseeded with rye like Augusta.  That made sense.

The "swings" used to make geographical sense to a great extent.  Season started in Hawaii, then California and Arizona.  Jump to Florida and depending upon the year The Masters was either in the middle of the Florida swing or between the transition from Florida to Texas.  By that time in the schedule the more northern courses were getting into shape and they started to swing up into TN for St. Jude in Memphis and the tournaments in the Carolinas.  After that they would head into the midwest, have The Open, back for the handful of New England tournaments and a few more midwest tournaments then slide back south, have the Tour Championship, then "silly season" as you guys call it.  Team events, skins tournaments, tour qualifying tournament, etc.

I guess it is a delicate balance of keeping sponsors happy, having courses ready, scheduling so the top guys aren't avoiding the same tournaments and keeping the players happy as well.

Ya, I mean it made way more sense to do it that way but now with all the $ sponsors are putting up and the top players playing limited schedules I'm sure they had to break up the Texas Swing, move from Cali to Phoenix then back to Cali just to keep the fields a certain strength while also keeping certain sponsors happy by having certain fields, etc.

I think you turn the fall into a huge qualifying tournament for the following season. PGA players that finish outside the top 100 or 125, the top XX from the Korn Ferry, top XX from the DPWT, top XX from Asia / Australia, etc. They all compete in a series of events to earn a PGAT card for the following year. They can keep the same locations (Barbasol, Sanderson, Mayakoba, etc), this would just provide some actual stakes. I don't really care about Russell Henley winning $1.4M in Mayakoba and earning some Fed Ex points. But I would tune in to see if Rickie Fowler or Jason Day can keep their tour card or if a young guy like Akshay Bhatia or Cole Hammer can make the leap.

I think that is what is going to happen, with a few limited event tournaments sprinkled in for the top 70... I think no more of guys making a living being 75 - 100 each year. They are going to have to play for their status the following year in the fall... We'll see if the PGAT finds good sponsors and puts money behind and promotes it. To see guys playing for their livelihood, the emotion and drive behind that is very compelling.

I would like to see more PGA Tour players play events such as the Australian, South African and Japan Opens or BMW PGA Championship.

The Aussie tournaments really surprise me. Great courses, great time to visit, home of a lot of great players with a great golfing history. I can understand wanting a break after a long season but a 2-3 week working vacation in Oz sounds pretty good to me.

I would love to see more of the top players play the Australian Open too.  Amazing courses on the Sandbelt.  However, the prize money (not to mention high income tax) means that most non-Australian players will not take the trip.  However, the purses are both sub 1.4M.  The purses are lower than 4 Korn Ferry Tour events...

Too bad, the Open and Australian PGA should be held in much higher esteem.

Good points. They need to find a way to up the purses. Perhaps these need to become co-sponsored events w/ the PGAT akin to the Scottish Open. I think it would make some sense to co-sponsor all the major opens. I think that'd be far more interesting than the WGCs. It would also be a cool accomplishment for a player not unlike winning all four majors. Very few have won all four majors but has anybody come close to winning all the big opens (US, British, Scottish, Irish, Spanish, Canadian, Aussie, S. Africa, Japan)?

I'd include the French Open in that group and probably as one of the higher ones too, outside the US Open & Open Championship.

Here is a older thread partially addressing this side-topic:

However, I don't think a "winner" was announced.  In terms of # of total wins (missing some other opens): Gary Player 13/SA Opens 7/Aussie 3/British, Jack: 7/Aussie, 3/USA, Thomson: 9/NZ 5/British 3/Aussie, Norman: 5/Aussie.  De Vicenzo: at least 39 worldwide National Open wins.  Would be nice to refresh that thread.

Absolutely, the 6 major world tours should align their flagship national open (US, British, Australian, South African, Japan, Singapore (Asian)).  That takes care of the "world tour" IMO.  TOP 50 OWGR auto-exempt.  Boost the purses through a coordinated effort.  These events have history and staying power, unlike any made up "big money" invitationals (I'm looking at your too, WGCs).  Challenge is that I believe in most cases the national open is not run or "owned" by the regional tour.  Need the foresight to see past immediate dollar signs..

you can't expect american golfers to want to go to australia ... it is a 20 hr flight with an obnoxious jet-lag in a country that has a small population giving limited funds to golf tournaments ... it's time we quit worrying about australia's golf ... yes, i said it ...

You're not wrong...

Is tennis that much bigger Down Under? Not apples to apples by the Australian Open tennis tournament has an overall 52M+ purse.

Or F1?

They obviously have to solve the money problem but I don't think the travel is that big of a deal. Plenty of stars have gone over to Dubai when the money is right and that's a 15 hr flight. Plus you can get back to back tournaments in Oz so you're out there for 2+ weeks. Further, I'd much rather spend some time in Melbourne or Sydney than the soulless luxury mall that is Dubai.

Ya idk what you're talking about. I dont think the travel is the main deterent, although it may be one with the size of the purses. I think its more of a scheduling issue on top of the $ you're getting for going. If you dont win, a lot of the top guys probably wouldn't see the trip as a valuable one. I also dont think fan size would be an issue, especially in bigger cities like Sydney & Melbourne. Like someone mentioned above, they have F1 come to Melbourne for 1 weekend and get 420K ppl to show up over the weekend.

Apparently Napa and Houston are trying to get onto the main schedule in 2024. I know this is farfetched, but with Honda ending ties with the PGA I wonder if Jay and co. are considering dumping that tournament and extending the West Coast swing by a week. Fortinet is locked in as a sponsor til 2026

It's an interesting question certainly. IMO the PGA Tour does everything to keep the Honda Classic on the Florida swing after 2023 under a different sponsor. Especially with the Nicklaus Children's Health Care Foundation as the main beneficiary of the event for 15+ years.

While at least this season it's not an elevated event I do not think the PGA Tour wants to lose an event in Florida especially since so many players on tour are based out of Florida and to who the event benefits.

Australian had a long and successful history in the game of tennis. Also the Australian Open having the status of a grand slam will always draw more sponsors than the golf equivalent tournament.

It is a popular recreational sport down under.
