This smacks of the pga and its execs not seeing the actual problem of field reducing prestigious events like the LA open, the api , and the memorial. People that dont like cut-less events dont want cuts just to bolster the meritocracy argument. they want cuts from 100+ player fields.

Personally, I like the smaller fields with cuts.  We'll see how many players actually end up teeing it up after sponsor exemptions, etc.  Glad that those 4 events kept the (mostly) traditional format.  The Los Angeles Open as it was with an (amazing) local qualifier is but a dream now.  I wish it wasn't so, but it is.  Just happy it didn't turn into a WGC-like mess with no cut.

 

Very much looking forward to seeing a better field at Pebble Beach.  May even make the trip now.  I'm sure celebrities will still be involved, but this was a much needed boost here.  I wish that there was some rotation AWAY from Harbour Town, Quail Hollow & TPC River Highlands.  Would have loved to see some of the other places get a field boost once every few years.

 

I think the Canadian Open remains under valued and under utilized.  This one deserves better.  RBC prefers that Harbour Town is elevated vs this one!?!

 

The "playoffs" still feel a bit bloated and the NET Tour Championship stinks, but reducing the field from 125 to 70 players added some intrigue to the "Mid-West Swing" post-British Open.

I don't really care if a player gets cut or not but they should give 0 points to the bottom 40-50% of the field to make sure you can't just coast through signature events for the year.

5 opposite field events 

9 signature events 

wm is no longer elevated replaced by pebble beach

of the 9 signature events only 3 have opposite field events

dell match play is gone replaced by  Houston Open

interesting that field sizes for the signature events except pebble beach was not listed only the cut size for the 3 invitational signature events, 50 and ties or 10 strokes from lead. pebble beach which has no cut will be 80.

winning an opposite field event doesnt get you into a signature event :{

For those that aren’t a fan of no cut would not paying and no points for everyone below 40th or whatever number be more agreeable? I just don’t see the point of the gripes I guess for lack of a better word especially in a signature event. The cut was qualifying for those events.

Id pay the tournament purses out to whoever earned it but only give points for the bonus money to the top 70/50/whatever.  No cut compromises the competition in my opinion.

Travelers getting elevated status for a second straight year a bit surprising.  They've been a great sponsor and put on a first class event but not sure I would have done it.  I'd like to see a tournament like Valspar get thrown that bone eventually too.

Agreed 100%.......The PGAT should have named them pre-qualifying events or pre-cut.🙂

I'm fine w/ guys getting paid and I agree that the act of qualifying into these events sort of acts as a cut. I think removing the points from those finishing ~50-70 or so makes sense. You shouldn't get Fed Ex points for stinking it up one weekend. Those points drive your tour card, qualifying for playoffs, access to these elevated / designated / signature events. Giving them points for playing like trash just establishes a "made man" framework. It shouldn't be any easier to keep status than it is to earn status.

The Players boasts a stronger field than some majors. I highly doubt they’d want to taint that by limiting the field to 80ish players.

There are so many exemptions and qualifications already.  The system is designed by the guys to keep guys in, not weed them back out.

 

I do agree with you that it should be a little more cut-throat for guys to keep their cards.  You start going through the players and you see guys you have hardly ever heard of that turned pro back in 2010 or earlier.  No wins.  Maybe less than 2/3rds of their cuts made.  May sneak a runner up or top ten in there and have career earnings of 5mil plus.
