2024 PGA Tour Schedule

Apparently Napa and Houston are trying to get onto the main schedule in 2024. I know this is farfetched, but with Honda ending ties with the PGA I wonder if Jay and co. are considering dumping that tournament and extending the West Coast swing by a week. Fortinet is locked in as a sponsor til 2026

https://www.fortinet.com/blog/business-and-technology/fortinet-becomes-title-sponsor-pga-tours-napa-tournament-fortinet-championship

"We’ve been down this road before. There’s a reason we went to the wrap-around schedule.”  .........As said by Stewart Cink.

Apparently the PGAT has a short memory.

I hope the Mexico Open moves to after the Genesis.

PGA Tour MUST take care of the National Opens. Tournaments and money grabs come and go. History is full of defunct World Championships, World Series', Grand Slams, etc. that offered more $$ than the majors.  You cannot buy the Canadian or Mexican Opens.

I'm still mad about what they did to the Western Open....and they are messing with the Los Angeles Open constantly.

Pebble Beach will be dumb as an elevated event, unless the nix the pro-am part. Which I don't see happening with the money they make off of it.

Not ideal, right?  I could live with it if Sunday is professionals only.  That is the only day with all players on the same course anyway.

...and sorry for the giant image.  Hopefully @Ferguson doesn't see it.

Don't get me started about the WGC'ing of the old Canada Cup aka the World Cup....

Interested to see it fully fleshed out but so far not loving the proposed changes to these designated events. The first few with a full field have been brilliant. To me, these just seem like a redoing of the WGC’s which pretty much no one liked or cared about.

Having read the changes that are to kick into gear, I guess I have not had long enough to digest how they will actually shake out in the long term but trying hard to see it from both sides at the moment and my two gut feelings are it is hard on those mid-tier guys who will be be all but locked out of events but equally, average play (whilst still beyond anything any of us will ever be able to do) has been way too rewarded over the years off the back of the big times.

The thought that popped into my head was that back when the English Premier League came into existence it was a 22 team league. After three seasons it went down to 20. The idea, whether you believe it or not, was that this was to promote excellence and not reward mediocrity. For as much as it must have sucked for Crystal Palace and their fans who were the additional team relegated and for Reading who would have normally been promoted to the Premier League after finishing second in Division 1, in the grand scheme of things I can't see that it did anything negative to the Premier League and I can't see that these changes will do anything negative to the PGA Tour.

We just destroyed the “other” tour in the ratings with a non-designated event. The other tour has, and is gaining, no traction whatsoever.

So let’s make our product more like theirs. This makes no sense!

I think the tour championship is appropriately a no-cut event; it’s a reward for having a great season. These no cut events are a reward for…what? A high owgr ranking?

2 elevated followed by 3 non elevated followed by 2 elevated? Lmao that schedule is going to be a wreck. Almost going a month with no Top end talent in an event is profoundly stupid.

Also no cut, "exclusive" events? How can they offer world ranking points 🧐....hahah the hypocrisy of this league you guys all stand by so staunchly

In Full Swing, I learned that apparently the top golfers are obligated to play those elevated events. I think this is in the last episode where McIlroy discussed how players felt when they found out they have to play those events.

I guess this is what they demanded (and got) in return (so that they are guaranteed to get paid for showing up.)

For example, the goal is to have a cadence to the calendar that would see two designated events followed by three non-designated tournaments, then another two designated. The top five point-earners from the three non-designated stops would earn their way into the next designated events. Any player who wins on Tour would automatically be eligible for every designated event that season.

This is from golfweek

The PGA "product" was always sold as a play well or don't get paid model.  Now it is a salaried group of players and everyone else.  Gee I wonder what made them adopt guaranteed money for top players?   The reality is the PGA tour can't fight money from outside selling "legacy" only since they don't control ANY of the majors and the majors just said they will allow non PGA members to compete.  The trouble with this approach is the other folks have more money than they know what to do with and can outbid any capitalist approach to pro sport.  They bought F1, soccer leagues, etc.  Wait until they bail out the DP world tour then see where all the "best" players want to go.

If the PGA tour never respected their "legacy" of stops in Tucson, Milwaukee etc why should the fans care.  This approach is a panicked reaction to the competitor in the game.  I am sure the sponsors of the non designated events (like Honda) are happy.  Honda was so thrilled they stopped their sponsorship.

End of an era.

The pga tour as we know it been whacked

And that’s that 🤣

But, this is the best way.

Tour needed to stuff more “guaranteed” 💰 into the best players hands to prevent defections

Also, they needed to assure sponsors who are putting up these bigger purses that the best players will be there

And it looks like it’s “fluid” to a degree. You still gotta play well enough to stay in the top 50. And if you aren’t, you can play up to it or qualify if you do great in the non elevated events.

Very well said. It was easy to see from the beginning that the Tour was clinging on to the "Legacy" rhetoric desperately. In the end it was just another phrase  like "grow the game", which means literally the opposite of where their motives lay. Its all about money at the end of the day & they're doing this to keep Players, Sponsors & broadcasters happy.

Agree.  I'm adamantly opposed to more no-cut events.  Maybe they're doing this as a way to get LIV to tap out early and then maybe roll some of this stuff back.

The condensed major schedule has hurt the tour. They really need more breathing room between majors to keep their schedule relevant

You still need to qualify entry into these events via performance in the previous year.

And there will be lots of guys, according to the tours “simulations” 🤣 who will get “bumped off” from year to year.

40% is the target for “churn”

“Tour executives ran multiple data simulations of how a season would play out to ensure sufficient churn in the system. Proposals from top players at their meeting in Delaware last summer called for smaller fields and no cuts, but their criteria would have seen 80 percent of players remain in the elevated events from season to season. The structure ratified by the board projects that only 60 percent of those eligible for designated events would remain so for the following season”
