When do you think they announce that these no cut events will be cut to three rounds and have a team format?

Jay Monahan is doing a full 180. What’s next?

The only thing that could potentially get the attention of the tour is if somehow the golf fan population (of which there isn’t consensus anyway) would just boycott the first of these elevated no cut events and not watch. Just a complete golf fan boycott. Somehow drive down the ratings substantially and make them rethink some of this.

I don’t mind some of the changes but some of it is stupid. I think the Tour is mis-understanding what golf fans enjoy watching. I don’t watch Rory or Rahm or anyone play golf just to play golf. Different players come before and after them. They’re just players. I watch compelling theatre of people trying to win something if importance. I love the Cinderella stories competing against stars. I never enjoyed watching WGC events. I think the players mistakenly think we care about watching them. I don’t.

It’s the same principal with college athletics. Fans of major college football or basketball teams would watch those teams play whether the players playing looked more like NFL players or High school players. As long as it’s a level competition the fans will watch.

Yes having Star power helps big tournaments. Of course. But you think if Collin Morikawa was someone else we wouldn’t watch the Masters? Or The Memorial? In 5 years who will care that Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed or Cam Smith might not be playing in the PGA Championship. I don’t care.

Big names always sell to the casual fan. Based on how you defined yourself, you are not a casual fan. In basketball a casual person might not watch a random NBA game. Say that game is Steff Curry vs Kevin Durant they are more likely to stick around. Same with golf. You put on a random golf tournament the average fan may not stick around. Say Rory or other big name players are in the field they are more likely to stick around. There is a reason viewership increases dramatically when Tiger is in the field.

The PGA Tour doesn't care about catering to a viewer like you because you are going to watch regardless. They are trying to someone who wouldn't normally watch to tune in.

The only sports that subverts this is the NFL and soccer. In those sports the brands are far bigger than the players, but a great player will still move the needle a quite bit. That's why the NFL does everything in their power to protect quarter backs.

Notes:

  • FALL 2022 schedule shown above
  • Designated events are italicized

WGC Match-Play and Mayakoba are gone.  Houston takes the WGC's place  Pebble moves to designated status.  I think the TOUR throws Jack a bone: moves his FL event and makes it a designated event 2024-only.  Mexico Open moves to the vacancy post Los Angeles.

December will fill up with PNC, Mixed Event and Hero.  I think the OWGR major member tours (outside of the Asian Tour) will look to co-sanction a "major" event each in the Fall/Winter

Will the following events move to the Fall or become Alternate Events opposite the designated events?  Perhaps the tour appeases Rahm and adds the Spanish Open?

Following events not added.  I can see the Tour losing some of these along with New Orleans.

Puerto Rico

Dominican Republic

Barbasol (Nicholasville, KY)

Barracuda (Truckee, CA)

Fortinet (Napa, CA)

Sanderson (Jackson, MS)

Shriners (Las Vegas, NV)

Zozo (Japan)

CJ Cup

Bermuda

RSM (Sea Island, GA)

The NFL does this too. The Sunday night NBC game is almost always a premium match up. Either two top teams facing off, or a division rivalry game. They also have flex scheduling where if a team under performs preseason expectations and was scheduled for a prime time viewing window, the league can adjust the schedule to a more favorable matchup.

Unlike the NBA, the NFL and MLB push specific franchises over players. It's why national broadcasts always include the Cowboys / Yankees / Red Sox. It's till the same concept, trying to give the average consumer more of what they want.

It’s a failure of the schedule to have no matchplay at all on Tour. They’re talking about elevated and limited field events. Why not have an exclusive 16 player matchplay with all the stars, ala Matchplay at Wentworth in the 1990s and 2000s. You won’t get your Kisner-English final then, you have Rory vs Spieth or a Thomas vs Scheffler. If they’re trying to think of interesting outside the box event ideas.

I think this comes back to the “product” match play isn’t good for tv not enough action

I like match play but it's not the most TV friendly format. There is a lot of dead time when you're down to the championship and 3rd place matches. What should be the crescendo of an event is mostly filled with walking down the fairway and lining up putts. Perhaps if the final groups we're miked up it'd make a difference.

If numbers and sponsors don’t support it, big deal. Only one basically made sense (and was still an anomaly) out of a year’s worth of events, so hardly a “mandate” for match play. I enjoy it but Ryder Cup and President’s is plenty of compelling match play if you want to watch it.  So not really a failure of the schedule. Who knows, maybe they are working on one.

Tour Championship should be 32 person matchplay bracket versus the dumb handicapped event it has become.

Why would the 1st place guy has the same chance of moving forward as the guy who finished 32nd for the season?  This is golf, not basketball.

If you had normal Fed Ex points during the playoffs and not the completely inflated scale they have now, along with the Tour Championship being it's own event independent of the winner of the total Fed Ex cup, the match play format with 30 or 32 guys would be much more fun to follow. Even if they refused to change the format of the winner of Tour Championship being the winner of overall Fed Ex, I don't think you could argue with the results versus the history of the Fed Ex champions being just as good. Keep in mind the last seven years have been held at a course that doesn't really fit the games of any of the top players.

They could also set up a combination of two qualifying rounds with top 16 being put into a bracket. There is much more potential with the small field than handicapping it. Do away with the notion that the winner of the last event has to be the overall Fed Ex winner. Like you said this is golf not basketball.

Absolutely not.  They don't play match play week in and week out and you wouldn't have the season ending finale be a format other than a 72 hole test, nor would you likely keep the sponsor or have players interested.  Way too much to chance.  Always trendy to suggest match play but it just isn't practical nor captures interest as has been proven over time.

It's already a completely different format than any other event during the year minus the Kapalua event. Also doesn't have a title sponsor as it is. Before the Fed Ex cup it was more of a celebratory event than anything. A way to celebrate the best players for the year. They have tried four different ways to get people's interest up since then. None have worked.

Right - underscores what I said, otherwise doesn't make a lot of sense - "celebratory"?

Again, maybe the Tour is working on one, but nothing about the above suggests it makes any sense as the final for the FedEx Cup and saying that the overall winner doesn't factor into it for the millions of dollars?  LOL, never happening. And you are incorrect that the winner of the last event has to be the overall FedEx Cup winner - see Tiger Woods, 2018.

I don't think anyone in this conversation actually thought they were going to change the event to match play. I'm just saying it would be more fun and probably get more buzz. Also, yes the winner of the event wins the Fed Ex cup. That's why it has been handicapped for the last four years, to prevent what happened when Tiger won it but not the Fed Ex cup.

That's right, the "Gundersen Method".  I don't watch it any more, lol, but that is correct.

LOL, send Jay this stuff.

None of it addresses the reality that the sponsors, players and Tour won’t be taking the grand finale of the season to a one-off match play event.

If they were mic’d up it would make a big difference. I don’t think there’s any problem with Matchplay with the right players. Mainly the presentation of the action. Have the cameras follow them around, deep insight into the hole they’re playing, the challenges they face. Get some chat going. Watch Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf, some of the 18 hole Matchplay and there was no issue with the format.

Article on GD with some commentary from "The Mules", including a current PAC member.

https://www.golfdigest.com/story/pga-tour-rank-and-file-criticize

The most telling quote, imo, is this one:

Quote

The PGA Tour Policy Board, which includes five players, approved the changes despite the objections of the majority of the 16-member PAC. “That’s because we have a PAC and then we have the secret PAC,” said one veteran player who spoke on background only and not for attribution. “The secret PAC is the group running things. And to be honest, they’re all about the present. They are trading the present for the future. We’ve always had this feeder system in which we provide playing opportunities and develop the next wave of star players. And, yeah, we’re still going to develop stars, but it might not happen as fast or as often. That’s not good.”

The top 70 players on the 2022-23 FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List will qualify for the first of three FedExCup Playoffs events, the FedEx St. Jude Championship, and be exempt into all Full-Field TOUR events for the following year. Qualifying for the Playoffs also ensures that a player will keep his card for the following season.

The top 50 players after the FedEx St. Jude Championship will advance to the second Playoffs event, the BMW Championship, and qualify for all Designated and Full-Field events for the following year. The Designated events are the eight events next year that will feature fields of 70-80 players and have elevated FedExCup points and purses.

The top 30 after the BMW Championship will qualify for the season-ending TOUR Championship. Qualifying for the TOUR Championship is an accomplishment that also comes with a two-year exemption on TOUR.

Players who finish outside the top 70 in the FedExCup will compete in the FedExCup Fall to retain their playing privileges. At the conclusion of the 2023 season, the top 125 on the FedExCup Fall Points List will retain their cards and be exempt into all Full-Field events in 2024, including THE PLAYERS Championship. Nos. 126-150 on the FedExCup Fall Points List will maintain conditional TOUR status.

Players who finish outside the top 70 in the FedExCup will retain their points from the Regular Season and compete in the Fall to stay inside the top 125. Nos. 51-70 in the FedExCup at the conclusion of the Playoffs will also retain their points entering the Fall and compete for spots in 2024’s early-season Designated events.
