Put the Project X Wedge 6.0 in my Hi Toe 3 wedges and gave them a run this last weekend. They are really nice. Full shots are nice. Partial shots are nice. Chips are nice. Pitches are nice. They feel great!

Got my 6.5's in and installed in my 58* and so far I think it will be an awesome fit in that slot, but not sure I will be moving away from Rifle's in any other wedges at the moment. It is truly amazing on anything less than a full shot, and in full shots it is still really solid but I am feeling pretty dialed in my 48* and 52* and don't want to mess with them right now.

As far as feel goes, to me they felt exactly like a 125g 6.0 and blend's perfectly into the Rifles. It really shines for those mid range pitch shots. Felt like I was able to get ball launching in the perfect window without feeling like I need to produce anything.

Will def be trying them out in the sand wedge area, but still waiting to see if I pick up a 58 T-Grind as I have one extra shaft to play with.

I bought just one 6.5 wedge shaft to try in my T grind, which is the club I was more curious about, I figured if I didn't like it in my LW I wouldn't like it in my GW. I play 6.5's in my irons and have been playing 6.0's in my wedges for 5yrs now. I definitely feel the weight more with the wedge shaft, but I do like what I have seen in the few rounds with it. I've recently switched to the new Pro V1x and between the ball and shaft I like the action I'm getting, good spin but doesn't seem to be at the sacrifice of distance. Now my issue is whether I find one for my GW, keep the GW as is and have a random 6.0 shaft in the bag lol, or put a standard 6.5 in the GW.

Will likely be picking up a fresh T grind this spring and I will just swap the wedge shaft into that.

UPDATE:

I have 3 rounds and quite a few hours chipping and pitching on a practice green.  I am still getting used to the feel on full shots compared to s400 (which I played in wedges for 6 years) but these are performing exactly how I would like my wedge shafts to perform.  I am seeing a considerably lower launch but have no data to back that up.  I am, however, tweaking my pitching technique which may contribute to the lower launch.  That being said, I practiced  35-50 yard stock pitch shots and saw low/mid flight with VERY controllable spin.  The lower I can launch wedges, the better as I can control the landing spot better and these shafts are certainly helping me do that.  I understand technique trumps any equipment but compared to S400, I am preferring the launch conditions with these on those touchy pitch shots.

I was worried when I went 6.5 all the way through the wedges, but my 52 went from being my least favorite of the bunch to No. 1 when I got that shaft in it. Especially since it is pretty much full swings only. That being said, I am sure I will try the 6.5 Wedge in that spot at some point this season just out of boredom and will probably have on of each in every wedge slot hah. I am finally getting outside next weekend and will have a better idea as to how it really performs.

I am guessing  that you are a fan of the T Grind then? Really struggling between picking one of them up or switching to the RTX6's in the SW/GW. Really love the 58 Low Zipcore I picked up, but feels like blasphemy not staying with Vokeys.

Love the T Grind! Played it in the SM8 for 2yrs and then the SM9 since last year. Wedge play has always been one of my strengths and there just isn't a shot im afraid of when I put that club behind the ball. Even on the tight firm lies, it lays so flat on the ground and I can slide it right under. I would say the only downside can be bunkers that have heavy fluffy sand, it can get a little iffy on those...but simple solution is to avoid the bunkers hahah! I've been playing the Raw version of it since that's all it came in over the years, but thinking about just grabbing a black finish one and stripping the finish off of it and shaving myself $50.

I wont say that other companies don't make good wedges, I tinkered with some Pings and Callaways over the last couple years but they never can beat out the confidence I have with Vokeys

Just as a FYI. PX measures a little heavier than stated. Not a big deal if you are using PX the whole way through. Used to seeing 2-3 grams heavier than stated (117 grams for 5.5 and 122 for 6.0). 4 grams over the stated weight class was more than I was expecting, but perfect for the intended use in a LW. image.png.37278dfcdf99126b18c1b5467a5c482e.png

Anybody have any thoughts on what the difference in flex between 6.5 regular and wedge shaft (so 5.5 I suppose) means for spin rates on chip shots/pitches inside 30 yards? Would this be major or minor?

I put a 6.5 regular in my lob wedge and it seems like I can’t make the ball spin on short shots. Helps a bit on full-ish shots but I’m wondering if that was a mistake and if I should swap it out for the new wedge shaft.

@Chief PenguinThat's a loaded question. There is a very long thread started by Howard Jones about "spinner" shafts for wedges. His argument is built around the fact that wedges will spin more if you use a stiffer (not softer) shaft in a wedge. A stiffer shaft by nature will have less lead deflection at impact and therefore less loft. In addition to that, there is a point where added loft does not increase spin, only increased launch (around 48-50*). Howard would argue that using a softer wedge shaft is not the way to add spin to a wedge. The hard part is that most of the mechanics around this apply to a full swing with the wedge. Dynamics can change significantly with partial shots around the green.

So why use a softer wedge shaft? 1) Increased launch angle and reduced spin on full swings. 2) softer feel helps you improve contact and control on partial shots around the green. Most will use a softer wedge shaft for the second reason. No way to tell how a softer wedge shaft will change spin rates for chip shots and pitches without trying one yourself.

Believe vokeys are .355 so as long as the shafts you bought are, no issues.

Yes, as long as the shafts are .355 taper tips. Make sure to prep it well and you’ll have no problems.

Yeah rough up the tips.  If you’re doing it by hand use a 60 grit.  Then use acetone to clean the tip before installing.  Also, since they’re taper tip it will be butt trim only.

Anybody try these in 7.0 yet?

For those that have tried in 6.5, would you say they feel like a standard PX 5.5 or closer to 6.0 in terms of stiffness?

I believe the 6.5W feels closer to 5.5 than 6.0. I have 6.5 rifles in my irons and put the 6.5W shafts in my SW and LW. They felt fantastic around the green but were just too soft for me on anything over about an 80% swing.

I settled on a 6.5 rifle in my SW and the 7.0W shaft in my LW. I just didn’t want the extra weight of the 7.0 in my SW. I couldn’t be happier with the current setup.

I think this is spot on. The wedge shaft is a full flex (10 cpm) softer. Similar to playing DG S400 in wedges and X100 in irons. The 6.5 wedge will have a butt CPM similar to the PX 5.5 iron shaft. I have PX 6.0 in my irons and PX 6.0 wedge in my LW only. The wedge shaft is perfect for touch shots around the green. Don't think I would want it in a wedge I take a full swing with.

I think it all depends upon spin numbers.  Your using a low spin shaft and I would think you would want more spin in your Wedges.  I would bet that an S400 will spin more then a 6.5 LS.  It kinda like why do most Pro's take out the PW in the set and use a custom PW.  They want the spin.

One interesting note as comparison is that Rory uses Project X in his wedges 6.5 which are different from the 7.0 in his irons.  You could consider a standard 6.5 Project X instead of the LS.

I just looked up Rahm and he plays the Project X 6.5 in his wedges also.

The Project X wedge will be a few cycles softer which will play into the roll of what S400 is for a lot of X100 players. So you will actually see higher spin numbers with the Project X wedge versions.

@TrueTemper Is the weight of the Project X 6.5 wedge shaft supposed to be 125 grams at 36.5”? I got three of these from GolfWorks and they all weighed closer to 120-122 grams uncut. They also look quite a bit thinner at the butt/grip than a standard PX 6.5 shaft that I have in my pitching wedge.

Did you get any clarity to this? Would seem to defeat the purpose if they are lighter. Also interested that you found them lighter when there is also a post earlier in the thread where someone showed the 6.0 model weighing 124g.

No, hoping to get a response from True Temper. I highly doubt these were just defects because all 3 weighed about the same and came from a reputable source, GolfWorks. It’s possible my scales were off, but I tried with 2 separate ones.

My thought process is that a regular Project X 6.5 shaft is 125 grams at 37” +, depending on the iron, uncut. Since these are 36.5”, shouldn’t they be a little lighter?
