Best Combo Set / Progressives ever

Yacho

Love me some bladed short irons, players cavity mids, and touch more help in the long sticks.  And I know you can build any "combo" bag you want, but there's something cool about having continuity in the design process with a full stack of 3-P that was meant to be a "set" from the beginning.  Anyone else?

I currently game 2004 Hogan FTX's, which are virtually impossible to kick out of the bag. But being a proper WRX club ho, I'm gonna try my best.

On the short list to try:

- Maxfli A10 Tour Limited

- Wilson Fi5

- Nike Vr Pro Combo

I still have my FTX irons, but alas father time and too much work put my in search of new set.

I'm more than pleased with my 2021 Apex Mixed set, which Callaway designed as a set, so the gaps are consistent.  For some reason Callaway doesn't offer that set, but they can be found on Cally Pre-Owned.

There's also the Apex Player Combo, which is Apex Pro and Apex MB which are closer to FTX

YMMV

Paradym 9.5

Rogue ST Max HL 3wd (really a 4wd)

Apex Pro 21 3 & 4

Apex 21 Mixed Combo Set 5-A

Jaws 5 54* C-grind

PM Grind 2.0  58*

Odyssey Exo Mini 7s

From a pure sexiness in the bag standpoint, nothing competes with the PM 731's.  It's a scientific, verifiable, peer-reviewed fact.

All other factors of all other combo sets are simply differentiated by opinions, and as such, the 731's stand alone.

Heck, they look so filthy just sitting there in a bag that it inspired me to learn to play this foolish game left handed, just so I can strut around my local muni with them in tow and catch all the leering glances from folks who simply can't handle all that sass.

At least, that's what I tell myself............

Played Wilson Staff Progressives 1-SW for about 8 years.

SW-8 blades,7-1, CB's. Simple soft forgings.

REALLY hard to find in lefthand.

Wish I still had that set.

Several models come to mind. From Titleist:

image.png.b8320fe39b4d15abe7914a8140bbe885.pngAnd the kings of my TM back-up bag, the SLDRs. Like several TM iron models, SLDR sets included two basic head designs.

  • 7i and below: Head with ThruSlot polymer sole insert to help with launch.
  • 8i and above: Solid piece traditional cavity back head.

Cobra s3 pro were my favorite combo set I ever played.  Nice thing about that set was that could order full blade set, full cb, any combination thereof, or the standard combo set in that model of 3-6 cb, 7-pw mb.  My particular set was made up of 3,4,5 in cb with 6-pw in the mb.

I read somewhere that these were cast, though they certainly look the part....   (not that I'm so snobby that I can only play forged irons)

Were they even offered right-handed?  I mean, I know it was super-fashionable to play lefty back then, but...    c'mon!

Split cavity 7-3 iron

solid CB 8-P

they are raw with a custom leading edge grind.

I think the three styles of the VR pro combos were the "P" for pocket-cavity (the ones with the undercut), "S" for split-cavity (the solid CB's), and "B" for the blades.  Stamped on the heelside hosel.

Though even without the blades, a rawed-out set sounds pretty f'in baller.

Beat me to it...pre-Puma Cobra S3 Pro combos are a tough set to beat.  Seamless transition club to club, no need to mess with lofts (and worry about bounce angles), and the short iron blade size and address look were almost perfect.

Another good candidate is anything Bridgestone from the mid-late '00s into the early '10s i.e. J33, 36, 38, and 40s.  Like the S3 Pros, you didn't have to worry about altering lofts for gapping (and the accompanying bounce angle caveats) and, also like the S3 Pros (and as mentioned above), you could pick and choose wherever you wanted the PCs, CBs, MBs in the set.

I have the J40DPC and they are pretty awesome. The ball melts into to the face.

they are fun to play too. Just don’t find them to be as performance oriented…. They go high and are stupid easy to hit, but it this floaty ball flight compares to a more penetrating shot…. I even have the elusive 3 iron in the J40DPC.

I just find those Nikes to perform so well.

I use the 3 iron off the deck and tee….

One day guys were asking me why I was laying up with an iron off the tee….. the other three guys were hitting driver…. I out drove them all day long off the tee with that thing.

it’s not even like I the driver was problem….. I just try to always play the irons on every shot when I take out one of my more vintage sets.

Best Combo sets, Titleist 735 cm.  I had 2i-PW and loved them, except the cavity back 4i-2i had deep CBs, that fought me when I wanted to work an iron.  They were designed to go straight all the time; lasted a year before I sold them.

I have 620 CB and 620 MB irons.  Making a combo set or straight, they are outstanding irons.  They are, by far, the best irons I've played in a long time.

Probably recency bias because it's what I'm currently playing, but 620 CB/MB are really, really good.

Nikes are the best i've swung in a factory combo set.  I like them so much I bought the blade heads in 4i-7i to make a complete set of blades and still have a set of combos as well.

I've never hit the FTX's but I heard good things about them, never figured out why they didn't catch on faster or harder.

There was a couple pretty cool Tommy Armour sets, like the Evo V-31s and the forged 845 combo set. I can say first hand that the forged 845s are pleasant to hit.

First time I've seen these...  the forged Evo V25's look absolutely awesome, like the 9-month result of a set of 845's and '99 Hogan Apex's sharing a couple bottles of Dom Perignon and a penthouse at the Four Seasons for a night.

Gonna have to keep an eye out...

1020 carbon steel, soft as angel poo.  They get dinged up super easy, but better feel than any Mizzy I've hit, better than my '88 redlines as well.  I bought a backup set once I started to learn that I couldn't kick them out of the bag (my home track is a touch rough in spots, so they get chewed up a bit).

Ebay is flush with them right now, so it's pushing prices down.  Lots out there for less than $150 to your door, for any combo set fans that want to give 'em a taste

Anybody ever have a set of Maxfli A10 Tour Limiteds?  I kinda wish they carried the 7i design into the 6 and 5, but they intrigue me nonetheless.  Nickel chrome?  Why not?

There's a set that's been listed in my local classifieds for ages. I'd probably have bought them if I didn't already have a set of Revolutions - same materials, soft casting as the A10. I can definitely see why you say that about the cavity design though.
